Lawler vs. Condit Official for UFC 193, Hendricks vs. Woodley a Go for UFC 192

Fresh off their crowd-pleasing, uber-violent wins over Rory MacDonald and Thiago Alves, respectively, the UFC announced via UFC Tonight yesterday that welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will defend his title against Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC 193 on November 14th in Melbourne, Australia. Said an official UFC spokesman:

With the next welterweight champion set to be determined in November, you’re probably wondering, “Well, who will be the next NEXT challenger?! I need to know NOW!!!” First off, calm down and stop being so goddamn needy, and secondly, the UFC is already one step and a few billion dollars ahead of you…

That’s because it was also announced on UFC Tonight that Johny Hendricks and his high school gym teacher dadbod will take on Tyron Woodley and his completely opposite of that physique just one month prior at UFC 192, with the winner most likely receiving a shot (or another, in Hendricks’ case) at UFC gold.

After losing his title via a somewhat controversial split decision to Lawler in their rematch at UFC 181, Hendricks bounced back with a big win over the always dangerous, always gritty Matt Brown at UFC 185. Woodley, meanwhile, has not fought since nabbing a split decision win over TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum in a catchweight bout at UFC 183.

UFC 192 goes down on October 3rd from the Toyota Center in Houston Texas and is headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson.

And finally in fight booking news, it appears that Diego Sanchez will be dropping down to featherweight for his next contest, where he will be given no easy test against former title challenger Ricardo Lamas at Fight Night 79. Sanchez, who has changed weight classes to save his career about half a dozen times by now, has not fought since stealing an absolutely unforgivable split decision win away from Ross Pearson back in June of 2014 using his patented “Swing Wildly, Land Nothing, But Keep Pressing Forward” attack (more commonly known as “Come at me, bro”-fu).

Lamas last fought in the main event of Fight Night 63, where he was TKO’d by Chad Mendes in the first round, snapping a two-fight win streak he had built since his title loss to Jose Aldo and proving once and for all that Full Training Camp Mendes > Motivated BJ Penn > Chuck Liddell With That Look in His Eyes. I don’t make up the rules, Nation. I just think them up and write them down.

Featuring a main event matchup between Matt Brown and Kelvin Gastelum, Fight Night 79 takes place on November 21st at the Monterrey Arena in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

UFC 192: Daniel Cormier Defends Against Alexander Gustafsson in Main Event

In the end, Daniel Cormier got his wish: He’s fighting in the South again.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is returning to Houston for UFC 192 on October 3, and the event will be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Cormier and challenger Alexander Gustafsson.

The fight was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Cormier (16-1) scored a submission win over Anthony Johnson in May to capture the title that was stripped from Jon Jones following a hit-and-run altercation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Jones had been scheduled to defend the belt against Johnson at UFC 187. But the UFC’s decision to strip Jones and subsequently suspend him indefinitely allowed Cormier—who lost a unanimous decision to Jones in January—to step in and win the belt.

Now, he’ll fight near his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana. An unabashed Houston Rockets fan, Cormier had campaigned for a main event slot on the show.

Gustafsson is coming off a loss to Johnson in January but was deemed the No. 1 contender for Cormier’s belt regardless. His last win came over Jimi Manuwa in March 2014.

“I think Alex is a worthy opponent. He’ll be a tough challenge,” Cormier told the Chronicle. “I’m sure we’ll give the Houston fans an exciting and fun fight.”

The only other confirmed bout for the card features Rashad Evans returning from a long layoff to face surging contender Ryan Bader in a fight that could determine the next challenger for Cormier’s title. Former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has expressed interest in fighting on the Houston card as well; he is a significant draw in the city, having sold out two headlining events in Toyota Center.

Tickets for UFC 192 go on sale July 31.

Rashad Evans vs. Ryan Bader Booked for UFC 192, Cain Velasquez Also Eyeing Fight

Rashad Evans is free of injury and ready to return to action with a fight against Ryan Bader at UFC 192.

As reported by Thomas Gerbasi of the UFC’s official website, Suga will step into the Octagon for the first time since his November 2013 victory over Chael Sonnen to take on an in-form Bader, who is currently ranked third in the organisation’s light heavyweight standings.

Houston’s Toyota Center will host the bout on Saturday, October 3, a day former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is also eyeing for his return, per UFC Tonight (h/t MMA Fighting). Velasquez surrendered his title to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 188 in June, finding no answer to the Brazilian’s third-round guillotine choke.

“Sources close to Velasquez told Ariel Helwani that he wanted to compete on that particular card because that’s the same one his training partner—and current light heavyweight champion—Daniel Cormier is hoping to fight on,” noted MMA Fighting.

Helwani believes the potential line-up is looking good:

Although Cain is yet to outline an opponent, UFC 192 is shaping up to be one of the year’s best-stacked cards. Velasquez’s only other loss came against Junior dos Santos in 2011, a defeat he has since avenged with two victories in the three-fight series. He will be itching to land another opportunity at Werdum.

Cormier will headline the card if he’s to be included, providing an excellent opportunity for Rashad or Bader to underline their credentials for his belt prior to the main event. He’d likely face Alexander Gustafsson after beating Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the light heavyweight belt in May.

Evans’ record stands at 19-3-1 heading into a challenging bout with Bader. Wins over Dan Henderson and Sonnen allowed him to gain momentum after Jon Jones and Antonio Nogueira inflicted back-to-back defeats, the first of which was for the title.

Rashad has struggled with knee injuries since stopping Sonnen, having battles against Cormier and Glover Teixeira cancelled over the last 15 months. Bader has gained traction in that time, beating Anthony Perosh, Rafael Cavalcante, Ovince Saint Preux and Phil Davis since December 2013.

Darth’s record stands similar to Evans’ at 19-4, but he is yet to experience the light heavyweight gold. The 2008 Ultimate Fighter winner has typically come unstuck against the best—his defeats have arrived against Jones, Tito Ortiz, Lyoto Machida and Teixeira—so he’ll be hoping to slay Evans before his opponent can regain his composure in the Octagon.

UFC 192 promises to be a memorable night, even before the main event and complete card is announced.

Evans’ return is big news and may allow the 35-year-old one final run to recapture the belt. The light heavyweight division is stacked with quality, so defeat for Rashad or Bader will set them back considerably.
