With the MMA universe scrambling to make sense of featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s supposed retirement on Twitter less than three months before his pivotal rematch with rival Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 200, it looks like the younger Diaz has decided to follow suit.

After catching word of McGregor’s apparent decision to call it a career, Diaz just took to his own Twitter account to post that he had had enough and was retiring as well. Check it out:

Now the word is still obviously out as to whether or not McGregor will actually retire, but his longtime head coach John Kavanagh has reported that it is true, and Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting has also reported that sources have told him it could be legitimate.

Still, it could also be a power play at more money for UFC 200, because he’s scheduled for a fight he could easily lose to Diaz, which would obviously be another blow to his still powerful-but-waning star power. Regardless, it looks like Tuesday just got a lot weirder for MMA fans everywhere.

As for Diaz, it’s most likely more improbable that he actually calls it quits, but he may have sent McGregor into an early one.

Current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has apparently called it a career.

The 27-year-old Irish star is set to take on Nate Diaz in the main event of this summer’s UFC 200 to avenge his first UFC loss suffered against the Stockton native at March’s UFC 196, but apparently he’s made enough ‘cheese,’ as he likes to call it, and is ready to cash out early. Check out what he had to say online:

McGregor was originally set to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title at UFC 196; however, an injury forced the Brazilian to pull out of the bout less than two weeks out from fight time. Diaz took the fight with “The Notorious” at welterweight, and would go on to defeat the Irishman with a shocking second-round submission.

Despite the loss, McGregor still enjoyed a lofty position as arguably the promotion’s biggest star with the featherweight title still being held onto by his iron grip, and he received a great amount of praise even in defeat for supposedly facing an opponent two weight classes up (even though Diaz is a lightweight).

Because of that attention, McGregor reportedly harassed UFC president Dana White for the welterweight rematch in the days following the bout, and was ultimately granted his shot at redemption in July.

McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh also threw fuel to the fire with a tweet of his own:

MMAFighting.com‘s Ariel Helwani has also reported that multiple sources are claiming this isn’t a joke:

And apparently, McGregor isn’t caving. Helwani updated the situation by clarifying that four hours later,”The Notorious” is still planning on hanging it up and the UFC has now reportedly moved on to other options:

The UFC has not made any official statement at this time, but it’s going to be tough to believe that a fighter with more drawing power than any other UFC athlete not named Ronda Rousey would retire at the height of his popularity.

UFC rivals Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz shared one of the most intense and entertaining rivalries in the sports history before they fought. The two were paired on just 11 days notice after lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of the UFC 196 main event bout with McGregor. The heated trash talk that came from just under two weeks worth of press conferences and interviews was instantly classic, and really laid the perfect stage for their highly thrilling encounter on March 5.

The man made to eat his words, of which there were copious amounts, that night in Vegas was McGregor. The aftermath of the thoroughly exciting welterweight affair was filled with mixed opinions. Many were impressed by the Irishman’s humble demeanour in defeat, but most just took the chance to bash McGregor in the moments following his first UFC loss.

Nate

One man who has not only been vocal about his feelings towards Conor McGregor, but also abut the UFC is Nate Diaz. His media tour since defeating ‘The Notorious’ has been filled with incredible insights in to the mind of one of the most popular fighters today. Once the news emerged that UFC 200 would feature another welterweight fight between the two, the Stockton grappler/boxer didn’t take long to start the beef brewing again.

Here’s his latest interview with FOX Sports, where he once again makes his feelings known about ‘The Notorious’ and also Frankie Edgar:

Nate Diaz 2

“I’m sure he’ll be all right when I beat him, I’m top of the food chain. I’ve been fighting top 10 competition for eight years. Losing to me is not so bad.

“You can lose to some lame ass or you can lose to a real (expletive) G fighter. I don’t think it will hurt him too much. He’ll be all right.”

“I’ve lost decisions that I didn’t really lose and if I asked to get a rematch it was out of the question like are you kidding me, don’t even ask,” Diaz said. “But this guy is getting praised for wanting a rematch. It’s like get the (expletive) out of here, (expletive), this is the fight game….

While the fight she has wanted since UFC 196 ended last month was an immediate rematch against Miesha Tate for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Holly Holm might be sitting on the sidelines until mega star Ronda Rousey makes her UFC return, as it’s starting to look like Rousey-Holm II is the direction things are headed.

As noted, Tate will be defending her UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title for the first time against highly regarded contender Amanda Nunes at the landmark UFC 200 event on July 9th.

On Monday, Holm spoke with Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour” at MMAFighting.com and admitted that she might have to wait for Rousey’s return before she gets back into the Octagon.

“It’s very possible [they make me wait for Rousey]. I don’t know what their real thinking is, but they’re obviously a successful business for a reason. They’re a successful promotion. They usually have their reasons behind everything.”

According to Holm, if she does get a chance to fight the Tate-Nunes winner — and she openly admitted she is routing for Tate to win — she will be ready to take that opportunity.

“I’ll be ready either way,” Holm said. “If I rematch with Ronda, I’m gonna train my butt off. If I rematch with Tate, I’m gonna train my butt off. If they give me one of the other top girls in the meantime, I’m gonna train my butt off.

“I feel like at this point, not having the rematch, which is what I really wanted, I kind of just changed my train of thought to just be open to whatever. I don’t want to be so focused on that that if something else comes my way that I don’t take advantage of the opportunity.”

Is UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor the most hated/loved man in the sport?

It’s a strange question when you think about it, as most fighters or even sports personalities in general are either one or the other for the most part. Of course every UFC star who has ever been in the limelight has detractors, it’s just part of the game, but ‘The Notorious’ has such a huge fan base and people who seem to despise him in hoards. So much of each in fact, that you could split them down the middle and come to the conclusion that he’s potentially the most loved and also hated fighter in modern combat sports.

Conor McGregor..

So what is it about the Irish superstar that gets people so besotted or angry? Well, his brash attitude is open to interpretation, some see it as a smear on the sport, whereas others love the entertainment factor that his outspoken style brings to the game. His performances are key in his popularity, but perhaps his brazen fighting style is not what the purists are interested in. Either way, love him or hate him, McGregor has engulfed the sport of mixed martial arts right now.

After losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, the sects of fans that have been waging war on Conor McGregor since day one were finally given their chance to kick the man while he was down. Unfortunately for the, ‘The Notorious’ was humble in defeat, and extrovertly unaffected on the most part. Unlike Ronda Rousey before him, McGregor remained focused on his goal while the MMA world eagerly awaited his next move.

Rematch with Diaz

The second fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will go down at UFC 200. The blockbuster July 9 card will serve as the second major milestone event, and is forecast to shatter all previous pay-per-view records. UFC 100 currently holds the title of numbers boss, and featured a star studded line up with Georges St-Pierre vs. Thiago Alves, Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir 2 and many more.

A loss for McGregor would perhaps not be as costly as imagined given the fact it’s once again at welterweight, and his featherweight title will remain intact for the moment. Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the interim title on the same card as McGregor/Diaz 2, much to the dislike of many fans of MMA.

One man who has given huge insight in to his own fighting life recently, and is a well known fan of mixed martial arts, is former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. He was asked what he thought about Conor McGregor in this recent interview, you should check it out…

In the aftermath of the blockbuster UFC 196 event from Las Vegas, Nevada, featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor sited fatigue and inefficient use of energy as the catalyst in his shocking submission loss to late replacement Nate Diaz.

McGregor, competing two weight classes above his usual home at 145-pounds, appeared to have tired himself out by throwing heavy leather early on in the bout.

Diaz’s teammate, Joe Schilling, recently spoke on the matter, saying that any professional would have known better than to use McGregor’s perceived method:

“You have 12 days’ notice to fight five, five-minute rounds. There is no way that any consumate professional is going to go out there and blow his wad in the first round – unless you’re Conor McGregor and you go out there and blow your wad in the first round,” he told The MMA Underground‘s Jonathan Shrager.

Continuing on, the world class kickboxer confirmed that Diaz’s game plan, which of course ended up being successful, was nearly the polar opposite to that of the Irishman’s:

“So, Nate’s game plan was to go out there, not get knocked-out, but not waste any energy, and pick up as the rounds went on, because you have to go five rounds. You look at Nick and Nate’s style of fighting – they don’t ever do that well in the first round. They set a pace and then they drown you in it and then by the third, fourth round, guys are shooting for takedowns because they can’t stand getting hit anymore.”

Diaz was able to exploit what many had felt had been McGregor’s weakness all along: the ground game. With the two now set to headline July 9’s monumental UFC 200, Schilling feels as if the rematch will be more of the same, although Diaz will be in even better shape this time around:

“I think that’s exactly what happened in the fight, and I think going into another fight thinking that Nate’s not going to be in better shape and come out with an even harder pace in the first round,” he continued.

“I think it’s going to be the same fight. I think it’s so obvious the wholes in Conor’s game, they were all over the place. I think the skillset that Nate has is far superior to Conor’s and Nate having a full training camp is just way different.”

Despite McGregor typical competing at featherweight, and Diaz being a natural 155 pounder, the rematch will once again take place at welterweight, a sign Schilling uses to accuse McGregor of being on steroids, an accusation Diaz has already made:

“If we’re going to talk about weight-gains and why he would want to stay at that weight class I don’t think it’s going to be that different when Nate talks about how you’re on steroids,” he began.

“Now, you can’t get back down to that weight class, you’re stuck at that weight division because you got on steroids, but we’ll wait for Nate to say that, not me.”

This isn’t the first time the “Notorious” one has been called out for possibly cheating, but his UFC 196 drug tests did indeed come back clean.

Do you hold any truth to these statements, and how do you see UFC 200 playing out?
