Late replacement Nate Diaz shocked the world in the main event, submitting featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the second round.

‘You Got Nowhere to Run Now,’ Aldo Calls for UFC 200 Rematch with McGregor

Well, that didn’t take long.

Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was quick to social media to call out Conor McGregor following the Irishman’s UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz. Aldo desperately wants to avenge that loss, and he clearly feels that the UFC 196 result will give him that chance. (Warning: Tweet contains NSFW language.)

McGregor unseated Aldo last December in emphatic fashion by putting Aldo to sleep in just 13 seconds. Having an immediate rematch with other title contenders waiting in the wings may be a tough sell, but there is no guarantee that McGregor even returns to 145-pounds.

In the days and weeks to come, McGregor’s future will clear up. He may drop back to featherweight to defend his title or make a permanent move to 155. Should he stick around at 145, Aldo’s chances at a rematch could be slim with Frankie Edgar’s presence looming over the featherweight title picture.

Nevertheless, Aldo took a well-timed shot at McGregor to make that rematch viable. UFC 200 would be a prime spot for a return to that rivalry.

Later, at the post-fight press conference, McGregor was asked about the tweets from Aldo. The Irishman was quick to respond, and made pointed remarks back at the former champion.

Fuel continues to be thrown onto the fire between the two stars.

Nate Diaz delivered what is by far the biggest win of his lengthy MMA career when he stopped previously surging featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., March 5, 2016) UFC 196 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

‘The Notorious’ badly bloodied Diaz early with his patented left hand, but seemed to fade in the second when the Stockton smack talker opened up with his patented boxing, leaving an opening for Diaz to lock on a super-tight rear naked choke for the jaw-dropping win.

After the legendary upset, Diaz took to the mic and celebrated like only he could. Check it out courtesy of the UFC right here:

A late change in opponent doesn’t typically lead to a change in career trajectory.

That’s just more evidence that Conor McGregor is not your typical fighter.

At UFC 196, which went down Saturday from Las Vegas, McGregor was competing in a weight class he hadn’t tried in the UFC before. He originally had a shot to make history, as the reigning featherweight champ made a run at lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos and two-division dominance.

McGregor, who held two title belts while competing in Europe, is clearly someone who wants to make big statements. After Dos Anjos pulled out with a foot injury, the potential statement grew even bigger when the Irishman moved up yet another division to welterweight, where Nate Diaz agreed to take the fight on less than two weeks’ notice.

Therein lies McGregor‘s new career path. Even as he spent the week matching invective with the wildly popular Diaz, the name of welterweight champion Robbie Lawler suddenly began to bubble up, overtaking Dos Anjos as the favored target of the moment. Even UFC brass got behind (h/t Sherdog) the idea.

But first, there was Diaz, a dangerous boxer and jiu-jitsu ace. Did McGregor turn the Lawler talk up to 10, or was Diaz the one to finally quash McGregor‘s Big Mo?

Oh, and Holly Holm—remember her?—defended her women’s bantamweight title for the first time, facing Miesha Tate in the co-main event.

There were 10 other fights on this card, and as always, the final stat lines only reveal so much. These are the real winners and losers from UFC 196.

For the literal-minded among us, full card results appear on the final slide.

Well, if Miesha Tate upsetting Holly Holm to become the new UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion wasn’t enough, the main event had quite the shocking outcome at UFC 196 as well.

UFC veteran and former TUF Champion Nate Diaz forced “The Notorious” Conor McGregor to tap out to a rear-naked choke at the 4:12 mark of the second round, ending what was a two-round war up until that point.

McGregor lumped up Diaz with kicks and punches in the first round, opening a big cut near Diaz’s right eye that turned the Stockton native’s face into a crimson mask. Diaz was covered in blood by the end of the first.

In the second round, Diaz’s face was a completely bloody mess after McGregor started putting together an impressive series of strikes only to get caught with some by Diaz that rocked him. McGregor never seemed to completely recover as from that point on, Diaz stayed on McGregor and blistered him with a barrage of shots that led to him getting the Irishman’s back and sinking in the rear-naked choke.

“Hey, I’m not surprised mother f*ckers,” said Diaz when Joe Rogan asked him how it felt to get that victory.
