Heading into his long-awaited comeback tilt against hated rival Daniel Cormier at April 23’s UFC 197, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones sent a collective scare throughout the MMA world when it was unveiled that he was due in court for driving without a license or insurance during a traffic stop.

It might not sound like all that big of a deal, but it was of course magnified by the fact that ‘Bones’ was still on probation for an April 2015 hit-and-run incident that left a pregnant woman with a fractured arm. His rematch with Cormier is still on as of right now, but today (Friday, February 19, 2015) an audio recording from TMZ revealed that the troubled but dominant fighter caught quite the break when he was caught traveling a huge amount above the speed limit.

In the recording, the officer who stopped him can first be heard informing Jones he had been clocked going 75 miles per hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone. Jones played it coy:

“Was I? Man, yeah, I didn’t realize I was.”

‘Bones’ then continued to plea his case by stating he didn’t have his license and was only headed to practice:

“I don’t; I don’t have my license. I was headed to Jackson’s MMA. I have a practice at 8:30.”

Then asked for his registration, Jones didn’t even know what that looks like, let alone have it:

“Um, is this it?”

Responding with a resounding, “No, the officer got a bit testy at the whole situation, where he had been provided none of the routine paperwork required to legally drive a car in any state. He continued to question Jones about his insurance documentation:

“So you don’t have anything with you then – you don’t have a license with you, no registration, no insurance? So where’s the insurance man?”

The stop got strange and questionable on his part when Jones proclaimed he didn’t know it was illegal to drive without insurance:

“I don’t know. You don’t know? No, I don’t know. So why you driving with no insurance,

dude? Is that illegal? You know it’s illegal man. No I don’t. Yes. Everybody has to have insurance. The car’s insured. But you gotta have a proof of insurance. Just because you’re telling me it’s legit doesn’t mean it’s legit. Yeah, I understand. I mean I gotta see some proof.”

Things sound pretty crazy at this point, but rest assured it gets even stranger when Jones attempts to explain why he’s driving without a license.

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis will try to snap a two-fight losing streak when he takes on Edson Barboza this April at UFC 197. Officials announced the bout recently, which will likely be part of the pay-per-view main card.

Set for Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the night includes two championship matches. Light heavyweight titleholder Daniel Cormier defends his belt against Jon Jones, while Demetrious Johnson puts his flyweight belt on the line vs. Henry Cejudo.

Pettis (18-4) is stuck in the first-ever losing streak of his career, having dropped the title to Rafael dos Anjos last year followed by a loss to Eddie Alvarez in his most recent outing. Before that, though, he had won five in a row, including four straight stoppage wins.

Barboza (16-4) has fought 14 times for the UFC, posting a record of 10-4. However, he lost to Tony Ferguson and will be looking to right the ship.

If you are thinking about putting down a bet on which fight at UFC 197 might win a bonus, this would be a good one. Combined Pettis and Barboza have 13 “fight-night” bonuses, with Barboza claiming six “Fight of the Night” awards.

Other previously announced bouts include Andre Fili-Yair Rodriguez, Clint Hester-Marcos Rogerio de Lima, Jessica Aguilar-Juliana Lima and Rafael Natal-Robert Whittaker.

Two of the most exciting strikers in mixed martial arts (MMA), former UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis and Edson Barboza were originally scheduled to face off last July, but an injury to Pettis caused the bout to be scrapped.

Well, the two men will now finally meet as the UFC’s Dave Sholler took to twitter to announce the fight for April 23’s UFC 197 from Las Vegas, Nevada:

“Showtime”, a man once considered to be the next big thing, has hit some rough times as of late, losing two straight and dealing with multiple injuries.

After surrendering his crown in brutal fashion to Rafael dos Anjos last March, Pettis recently returned at UFC Fight Night 81 last month, dropping a split-decision to former Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez.

Barboza has also been off his game so to say, losing two out his last three bouts. He was last seen taking on Tony Ferguson in what was a fantastic back and forth fight last December, but ultimately ended up losing by way of submission.

While Pettis in particular has shown a weakness against top level wrestlers, one could assume that this fight will take place mostly on the feet, and if it does, fans could be in store for a classic showdown.

UFC 197 will be headlined by a light heavyweight grudge match as reigning champion Daniel “DC” Cormier puts his title on the line in a rematch against former champion and current pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones.

Dominant flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson will also defend his strap in the co-main event as he squares off with former Olympian Henry “The Messenger” Cejudo.

The lightweights will now square off this April at UFC 197, officials announced recently. The event includes UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones and UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo.

Franca (13-3) is 10-1 over his last 11 and on a three-fight win streak. That includes a rear-naked submission win over Fernando Bruno back at UFC 190 in his debut with the promotion. He has finished a dozen of his 13 career wins.

Vick (8-0) debuted with the UFC back in 2013 and scored a guillotine choke on Ramsey Nijem in just 58 seconds to make a splash. He has followed that up with wins over Valmir Lazaro, Nick Hein and Jake Matthews.

In 2012, Vick appeared on the first – and only – live season of The Ultimate Fighter. He won his first three fights, including a knockout of Daron Cruickshank, before falling to eventual winner Michael Chiesa in the semifinals.

The rest of the UFC 197 fight card includes Yair Rodriguez-Andre Fili, Robert Whittaker-Rafael Natal, Marcos Rogerio de Lima-Clint Hester and Jessica Aguilar-Juliana Lima.

The fight we all knew was coming has finally been announced, as the UFC recently confirmed that reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier would rematch former divisional kingpin Jon Jones at April 23’s UFC 197 from Las Vegas.

The two faced off for the first time at January 2015’s UFC 182 in one of the most hyped up, bad blood fueled bouts in sport history. In the end, however, it was Jones who walked away with a convincing one-sided decision victory and the light heavyweight strap.

Then scheduled to defend his long held title against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at May 2015’s UFC 187, Jones was suspended and stripped of his title after being arrested on felony charges.

“DC” would step in and submit Johnson to become the undisputed 205-pound boss, while “Bones” watched from the sidelines.

However, the former title holder was reinstated into the UFC after avoiding jail time, and will now look to reclaim the title he never technically lost.

In his time away from competition, it appears as if Jones has gained a new found focus and motivation, seeming hungrier than ever to get back on top. Physically, he has gained a passion for strength training and power lifting, which has left fans with endless videos of a scary looking, jacked Jones.

Aside from his fitness, the ex-ruler has focused on his martial arts skills as well, and he posted a video to his official Facebook page today of him smashing pads and throwing kicks with his striking coach Mike Winklejohn. Check it out below:

“Bones” definitely appears to be in the right mindset ahead of the highly anticipated fight, and he’ll have to be given Cormier’s pedigree.

Can Jones get the job done again and earn back his title?
