In the weeks since Michael Bisping won the UFC middleweight title from Luke Rockhold in shocking fashion at June 4’s UFC 199, there’ve been an windfall of potential challengers looking to get the next shot at ‘The Count’s’ throne.

Those names include previously unforeseen competitors like Georges St. Pierre and Dan Henderson, but perhaps no legitimate contender has been more vocal about a title shot than former champion Chris Weidman, who was originally scheduled to meet Rockhold in a UFC 199 rematch before a serious neck injury postponed that fight for now.

Bisping believes that Weidman, who lost the belt to Rockhold at last year’s UFC 194, should rematch Rockhold and the winner should face him. Weidman unsurprisingly thinks ‘The count’ is simply running scared and looking for an easier fight against ‘Hendo’ or ‘GSP.’ After the East Coast native voiced that thought online, Bisping fired back today (Sun., June 26, 2016) with the notion that Weidman should win a fight, as he seems to be suspiciously injured quite a bit in the post-USADA era:

Weidman then responded that Bisping was trying awfully hard to trash his name while looking for to fight seemingly easier opponents:

And the former champ didn’t stop there, adding that he would stop picking on a guy that ‘didn’t want to fight’:

So it seems the trash talk battle between Bisping, Weidman, and the rest of the suddenly wide-open UFC middleweight division is in full swing without an end in sight. With Weidman hopefully returning from his neck issue in time to fight at November’s monstrous UFC 205 debut in his home state of New York, a match-up with the British champion obviously makes sense from a pure marketing and magnitude standpoint.

Now it’s up to the UFC to find out just who wins the ‘Bisping Sweepstakes’ and actually gets the next crack at the belt.

Still fresh to the throne, UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is hot property right now. It was 10 years ago to this day that he joined the UFC, and is now a far cry from the unknown Englishman with a brash attitude. He is famous, successful, a wealthy man and has a huge target on his back after dispatching of Luke Rockhold at UFC 199. ‘The Count’ put away ‘Rocky’ with a rousing first round knockout, and now the challenges are flying in faster that we can report them.

At first it was Rockhold demanding an immediate rematch, then a rematch with Dan Henderson was being discussed for UFC 204, then welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre declared he wanted ‘The Count’ as his return fight. Later we had Chris Weidman engaging in heated beef with Bisping on Twitter, Jacare Souza demanded his props and Nick Diaz reportedly challenged him to fight at 178 pounds. It’s more of a question of who doesn’t want to fight the new middleweight boss at this stage.

Years of talking smack but falling at the most crucial hurdles has landed Bisping in quite the unique position. Everybody knows who he is, he’s been around the game for an age and has fought some of the most well known names in MMA history. He’s made headlines on a constant basis with his outspoken style in the media, and is also a very good analyst for FOX on the side. The result of these factors and his ground shaking starching of Rockhold is a growing opinion that fighting Bisping is a red panty affair.

Quoting the phrase of the UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor leads us nicely to the topic of today’s article. Bisping had some very interesting opinions on ‘The Notorious’ in a recent interview that you may find very entertaining.

Michael Bisping Is Willing To Fight Nick Diaz, But There’s A Catch

Ever since Michael Bisping won the UFC middleweight championship with a shocking first-round knockout of heavily favored Luke Rockhold in the main event of June 4’s UFC 199 from Inglewood, California, there has been a seemingly never-ending stream of potential contenders for ‘The Count’s’ belt.

Rockhold understandably wants his rematch, former champion Chris Weidman wants the title shot he was supposed to get against Rockhold, and even Bisping’s old nemesis Dan Henderson has been thrown in the hat after ‘The Count’ said he wanted to finally settle their score from 2009’s UFC 100 (and ‘Hendo’ knocked out Hector Lombard in devastating fashion).

And then things were taken to an all-new – and unexpected – level earlier this week when all-time great former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre revealed that he was willing to return for a title fight against Bisping if he could only get his contract situation with the UFC sorted. Weidman was quick to point that Bisping was perhaps taking ‘easy fights’ in order to hold on to his belt, but the fact remained that any fight with ‘GSP’ – even a title fight in a weight class he had never fought in – was big money bout that simply could not be passed up.

But there’s apparently yet another big name to throw his hat into the ‘Bisping Sweepstakes,’ as ‘The Count’ revealed on ‘The Countdown’ podcast that he had recently hung out with popular bad boy Nick Diaz, and the Stockton slugger levied a challenge for a bout, albeit with a somewhat strange stipulation:

“I’ll tell you something as well, another possible opponent that hasn’t been spoken about, and I was with him a couple of night ago in New York, I bumped into him in New York – Nick Diaz. He’s like, ‘Man, we should fight, we should fight.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m down to fight you no problem.’ And then he says, ‘But we have to do it at 178.’ I’m like, ‘What do you mean 178?’ He said we do a catch weight at 178. I’m like, ‘Let’s just do 185.’ He’s like, ‘Nope. 178.’ So anyway, I had a good time with Nick, by the way, we had a couple of drinks and hung out, he’s a good dude.”

Asked about the reasoning behind Diaz’ strange request, Bisping said he didn’t know and didn’t ask:

“For sure. I don’t know, he didn’t elaborate, and I’d had a couple of drinks, so I didn’t really think to ask the question. He definitely wanted to fight at 178, which is kind of a curious weight. But there you go, there’s another potential name.”

Perhaps Diaz is looking to get an advantage on the larger Bisping by forcing him to cut an unusually large amount of weight, but it is a curious suggestion given that ‘The Count’ is finally the UFC middleweight champion and that appears to be what everyone is chasing him for.

The older Diaz brother will be eligible to return from his marijuana-based NSAC suspension this August, and it’s no secret that some big fights will await him despite the fact that he hasn’t won a UFC fight since 2011 – yes, 2011. Just don’t count Michael Bisping as one of them, because with a full queue of competitors chomping at the bit to get a chance at his 185-pound title, it’s almost impossible to see ‘The Count’ even considering a drop down to 178 pounds.

Stranger things have happened, I guess.

Chris Weidman Willing To Fight ‘Whoever Wants It’ At MSG

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is still hoping to receive a shot at the title upon his return from injury, but he isn’t too confident that he’ll be granted his wish. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title earlier this month at UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout, leading Michael Bisping to step up on short notice and knock out Rockhold to become the champion.

Weidman, a Long Island native, has called out Bisping multiple times for a fight at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 which will mark the UFC’s inaugural trip to New York at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Bisping, however, has seemed more interested in getting revenge on No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, or perhaps facing off with returning former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At this point, Weidman isn’t going to ‘cry’ about it, but he did confirm that he will be willing to fight anyone as he long as he gets his spot on the MSG card:

“I’ll be at Madison Square Garden waiting for whoever wants it. Bisping doesn’t want it. You know, it was my title shot and he had the opportunity because of me. Now he’s trying to fight the thirteenth ranked guy in the division. It’s good for him. Good for him, man. Fight anybody you want. He’s trying to get a ‘W’ under his belt. Hey, if he can make it happen, good for him. I’m not going to cry about it, honestly.” Weidman told MMAJunkie.

If Weidman isn’t given a shot at Bisping, who would you like to see him face off with in New York? Perhaps a rematch with Rockhold would make sense, although divisional supremacy wouldn’t be on the line this time. Fellow top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza could also present a formidable challenge for Weidman, and the Brazilian should be returning from injury around the November time frame.

After being asked to step up on extremely short notice to face off with Luke Rockhold for the middleweight title at June 4’s UFC 199, Michael Bisping wasn’t given much of a chance by the MMA community. However, he then shocked the masses, knocking Rockhold out cold in the very first round to become the undisputed champion.

Perhaps even more shocking then his victory, however, was his choice of who he would like to first defend his title against. Rather than one of the division’s top contenders, Bisping has his eyes set on No. 13-ranked ageing veteran Dan “Hendo” Henderson.

There is quite back story here, as “Hendo” infamously finished Bisping with one of the most iconic knockouts in sport history back at UFC 100 in 2009, but from a rankings standpoint, it simply doesn’t make much sense. Crazy or not, however, UFC President Dana White recently admitted that he was considering the possibility:

“I know a lot of people want to see that fight, but there’s so many guys that we would have to jump over to do that fight. But most of them are hurt. ‘Jacare’ is hurt, Weidman’s hurt, Rockhold just lost. So I wouldn’t rule it out. He’s saying win, lose or draw, if he fought Bisping in a title fight he would retire. But if wins the belt I highly doubt he would retire. I don’t know, it’s a tough one. I’ve questioned over the last year whether Henderson should still be fighting at 45, but it’s hard to deny the guy when he’s taking people out the way that he is.” White said on a recent edition of the UFC Unfiltered podcast.

Despite his age, Henderson is indeed coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard at the very event in which Bisping toppled Rockhold for the title, but is he deserving of a title shot? Many would likely agree that he’s not given the current landscape of the division, although the interest for a rematch between Bisping and Henderson seems to be there.

Would you like to see these two veterans run it back?

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping capitalized on the opportunity to take Chris Weidman’s place in the title fight with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, doing so on just two weeks notice. Many believed Luke Rockhold would retain his belt, especially given the dominant win he held over ‘The Count’ in their first fight, but the Englishman made good on his promises to finish ‘Rocky’ on June 4. A flurry of clean punches to the chin cleaned out Rockhold in the first round, and Bisping had finally captured a title after 10 years of hard work.

With the storming victory came a stream of challenges from a line of contenders. Jacare Souza, Dan Henderson, Rockhold, Chris Weidman and even Georges St-Pierre wanted a crack. ‘GSP’ claimed a return fight with Bisping was ‘close,’ Henderson and ‘The Count engaged in an all new war of words that has fans clamouring for a rematch of their classic UFC 100 meeting. ‘Hendo’ scored an iconic knockout over Bisping that night and it seems somewhat fitting to have Henderson retire after a rematch, although the rankings would argue otherwise.

bispinghendo[1]

But through all of this the former champ and number one contender Chris Weidman hasn’t really had his name thrown in the mix all that much. ‘The All American’ pulled out of the UFC 199 main event after a neck injury, later undergoing successful surgery to fix the issue. Now he’s clearly trying to drum up some hype for the most realist fight that’s been suggested since Bisping took over the division.

michael-bisping-ufc-127

It’s certainly a strange spot for the 185-pound division to be in right now. The unfinished business with a soon to be retired Henderson could well overshadow the official rankings in this scenario, and leave matchmakers with a tall task regarding the rest of the middleweight contenders. Should ‘Hendo’ have to fight his way back up or just retire, or does his epic KO over Bisping hold enough weight to have the ageing legend skip the queue?

The former champion Chris Weidman could fight Luke Rockhold in the meantime, but what would Jacare do? Throw in St-Pierre, who’s never even fought at middleweight, and you have an even more entertaining but also troublesome mix.

The only man smiling here is Bisping, who apparently hasn’t changed a bit.
