Chris Weidman isn’t one to make excuses for himself inside the Octagon.

Weidman, a former UFC middleweight champion tried to keep from discussing the series of injuries he had entering UFC 194 in follow-up interviews. However, word eventually came out detailing a broken foot in two places that “The All-American” suffered weeks before he lost to Luke Rockhold.

Now, as Weidman (13-1) continues to push toward a rematch with Rockhold at UFC 199 later this year, he finds himself working just as hard to prove the naysayers wrong another time.

“I know what I’m capable of,” Weidman said, in a recent interview with MMAFighting.com. “I know my potential and I know I wasn’t close to it. The fact that because of what I’ve accomplished in the past gives me the opportunity to get a rematch is a great situation to be in. In most situations, people don’t get the second chance, especially right away. So, I’m very grateful for the opportunity I have. There’s no question in my mind that I’m gonna go out there and make a statement, completely dominate him and make sure everybody knows the last fight was a fluke.

“I knew what I was getting myself into, but I still thought I could go out there and beat (Rockhold). Even with that stuff. And he proved that I was wrong. He came out to fight. He was better than me that night.”

Weidman won the title when he finished Anderson Silva, defending it vs. Silva in a rematch and against former champions Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort before suffering his first career loss.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey suffered a harrowing knockout loss against Holly Holm at UFC 193, one that sent her in to a tailspin of depression and negative media for the months following. Having lived the life of the most dominant champion in the division’s history, overnight ‘Rowdy’ fell in to a pit of despair that she would not emerge from until last month. It’s important amidst all the criticism over Rousey’s attitude to remember she is human, just like the rest of us.

The persona we see in UFC promo cuts and media sessions is not necessarily an accurate depiction of the real Ronda Rousey, and I feel the circumstances surrounding UFC 193 go much deeper than it appears. The common MMA fan might tell you that she was simply a hype train that got derailed, beating ‘lesser’ competition in a division devoid of real talent. In reality, the women’s 135 pound division needs a boost, that’s true, but this isn’t a tool to take away a champ’s achievements. The loss to Holm leaves one clear message to consider; Ronda Rousey needs to change camps.

Here’s why:

Improvement, or the illusion of

Rousey came in to the UFC 193 main event intent on destroying Holly Holm in the stand up department, but for some reason was overlooking the former boxing great’s own striking skills. For a fighter like Rousey, only really focusing on boxing for three years, to take on a thorough bred pugilist like ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ head on like that, there’s really something wrong there. Completely abandoning the bread and butter grappling style that got her to the belt in the first place, Rousey was like a lamb to the slaughter, and it was certainly a rough night down under.

Her stand up was always going to look amateur against a great boxer and kickboxer like Holm, but it wasn’t just down to her opponents skill advantage. Everything about Rousey’s stand up was wrong, her footwork, lack of head movement, inability to cut angles or close off her opponent’s movement, her hand position, her range, her lack of head movement. In reality, she had absolutely zero fundamentals, not even the basics, to show Holly Holm that night in Melbourne, Australia. At some point, you have to look at who is training her to use these techniques, who is telling her that this is how you fight.

Which leads quite nicely to the next point.

The tension has seemed to grow greater between middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and ex-boss Chris Weidman ahead of their scheduled rematch at June’s UFC 199 from the L.A Forum in California.

The two previously met at last December’s UFC 194 with Rockhold scoring a fourth round finish to steal the title away from Weidman.

The champion believes that losing the belt has gotten under the skin of Weidman, also noting that while the New York native is a great fighter, he’s simply the best:

“Obviously not having the belt has got to him” Rockhold told reporters at a recent EA Sports media event (Via MMAJunkie) . “I don’t know where he’s coming from, he’s just really emotional – maybe he’s on his period or something. … He doesn’t look like himself. We’ll see if this emotion helps him. But to my knowledge emotion doesn’t help you fight.

“He better check himself or this fight’s going to be over a lot sooner than he expects, maybe than even I expect. I don’t feel threatened by Chris. I really don’t see what he’s going to bring to the table to blow me away. … He’s a great fighter, but I’m the best.”

As far as how the rematch will play out, Rockhold doesn’t see it being close at all like the first scrap was. The American Kickboxing Academy product is expecting to make it a quick night for Weidman:

“I think you’re going to see a different fight,” Rockhold said. “It’s going to be quick, it’s going to be fast, it’s going to be precise and I’m going to go in there and execute”

Do you see Rockhold retaining the title, or will Weidman end up back on top of the 185-pound throne?

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman didn’t play around when describing just how critical his rematch with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199 later this year is.

As you can see from the above message posted by “The All-American” on Twitter, he is taking the fight very seriously.

Weidman, who lost to Rockhold this past December, won the title with a victory over Anderson Silva. He followed that up by proving his win was no fluke, defeating “The Spider” for a second time. Successful title defenses vs. Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort followed before Rockhold rocked him.

Gegard Mousasi Calls Out Anderson Silva For Potential Showdown

No. 9-ranked former Strikeforce champion Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi has made it quite clear who he’d like to fight next: former long-time divisional kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva. No. 9-ranked former Strikeforce champion Gegard “The Dreamcatcher” Mousasi has made it quite clear who he’d like to fight next: former long-time divisional kingpin Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

Mousasi’s manager, speaking with MMAFighting.com on the topic yesterday (March 9, 2016), noted that “The Dreamcatcher” would be open to squaring off with Silva in the next few months, preferably at June’s UFC 199, or July’s UFC 200:

“All of the Brazilian media has been contacting us today about a potential Mousasi/Silva match-up in Brazil. It is an exciting idea as it will be a stadium show. However, the Curitiba card is right around the corner. Therefore, we need adequate time to put the camp together and prepare. We would gladly fight Anderson. However, a May date is too soon of a return. Had we known immediately after the London card then maybe. But that time has passed us, unfortunately. We will take the fight gladly. However, I think it would make more sense to have them fight either at UFC 199 in LA at the earliest, or alternatively, at UFC 200 in Vegas at the latest. Gegard wants to have the fastest turnaround possible while not compromising the organization and structure of his training camp. So the question should go back directly to Anderson on whether he accepts our challenge at either UFC 199 or UFC 200.”

Mousasi is coming off of a dominant one-sided win over Brazilian slugger Thales Leites at last month’s UFC Fight Night 84.

Silva also competed on that card, dropping a somewhat controversial decision to Michael Bisping in his return from a year-long suspension.

This fight definitely makes sense for both men, as Mousasi would have the chance to add a huge name to his resume, while the 40 year old Silva would have the chance to see if he could still compete with the top 10.

Thoughts?
