The co-main event of UFC 203 has taken a major hit.

According to MMA Junkie’s Steven Marrocco on Twitter, No. 5-ranked heavyweight Ben Rothwell has pulled out of his scheduled contest against Fabricio Werdum citing an unfortunate knee injury.

The UFC is reportedly seeking a replacement opponent for Werdum now:

Rothwell (36-10) comes off of a unanimous decision loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC Fight Night 86 back in April, he was previously riding an impressive five-fight win streak before suffering the disappointing loss.

Werdum (20-6-1) is fighting to re-enter the title picture after suffering a brutal first round knockout loss to Stipe Miocic in Brazil, dropping his heavyweight strap in his first career UFC title defense.

‘Vai Cavalo’ had previously choked out former champion Cain Velasquez in the third round of their main event meeting at UFC 188, where Werdum secured the undisputed heavyweight throne.

Now it seems Werdum will have to sit back and await a new challenger that the UFC is currently searching for to step in on one month’s notice to face the former champ.

One viable candidate is the former heavyweight king Velasquez who is coming off of an impressive showing against Travis Browne at UFC 200, in which he finished ‘Hapa’ in the first round of the heavyweight contest.

Velasquez would certainly love a shot at redemption against Werdum who took his title away from him, and added insult to injury by doing so in front of his native crowd in Mexico City.

What are your thoughts? Could Velasquez step in on one month’s notice and contend with Werdum for the next shot at the heavyweight title?

Alistair Overeem Questions How Hard Stipe Miocic Is Working

Legendary dutch kick boxer and No. 3-ranked UFC heavyweight Alistair Overeem has undoubtedly made his mark on combat sports. “The Reem” is a former K1 world champion, as well as a former DREAM and Strikeforce heavyweight champion. Despite all of his accomplishments, however, Overeem has yet to get his hands on the UFC heavyweight strap, but he will get the opportunity to do so when he meets reigning champion Stipe Miocic in the main event of September 10’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio.

Being one of the biggest names in the sport, Overeem was riding quite the hype train when he entered the UFC in 2011, and he quickly made a statement, dismantling former titleholder Brock Lesnar in the first round of their UFC 141 bout. “The Reem”, however, then lost three of next four, and it appeared as if many had written him off, but now at age 36, he may have never looked better. Overeem has won four straight with three coming by way of stoppage including back-to-back finishes over former champions Junior Dos Santos and Andrei Arlovski.

Miocic has also been on a roll, owning three straight stoppage victories with his most recent being a first round starching of former champion Fabricio Werdum last May to secure the belt. In the aftermath of the bout, Miocic was celebrated in his home of Ohio, and Overeem has been questioning whether or not Miocic may be enjoying the attention a bit too much.

Speaking on yesterday’s (August 8, 2016) edition of The MMA Hour, Overeem said that while Miocic has been ‘partying’, he’s been working:

“He’s riding a real high, he’s the hero of Cleveland, he’s celebrating it, he got married and doing the Vegas thing. He’s partying. So I got one message: The wolf that is hungry is going to run a little bit faster than the wolf that is chilling on top of the mountain who has his belly full. And that’s a little bit of what I am seeing here. Yeah, he’s enjoying the life, enjoying the high, but I have been working. After Arlovski I went straight back to the gym and I’m just working, working. I am working for that day, which is coming up on September 10. It gives me confidence and it builds me up. I’’m putting in the extra work and you need to do that as champion and I am doing it.” Overeem said.

Who do you expect to take home heavyweight gold on September 10th live on pay-per-view (PPV)?

No. 5-ranked UFC flyweight Ian McCall, who hasn’t competed since suffering a decision loss to John Lineker in January 2015, was slated to make his return to action against Justin Scoggins at last weekend’s (July 30, 2016) UFC 201 from Atlanta, Georgia. Unfortunately, Scoggins experienced weight cutting issues and was forced to withdraw from the bout just days before. Following the fallout, “Uncle Creepy” made it clear that he’d like to fight in the near future, and it appears as if the promotion has granted him his wish.

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, McCall will now face off with No. 14-ranked Ray Borg at September 10’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio.

Prior to dropping a loss to Lineker, McCall had won two straight over Brad Picket and Iliarde Santos. Before those victories, McCall was riding a two-fight losing streak, although those loses came at the hands of the division’s elite, dominant champion Demetrious Johnson and longtime top contender Joseph Benavidez. “Uncle Creepy” has remained a contender in the 125-pound division.

Ironically, the 23-year-old Borg is coming off of a decision loss to Scoggins. Before suffering that setback, “The Tazmexican Devil” had won three straight over the likes of Shane Howell, Chris Kelades, and Geane Herrera.

UFC 203 will be headlined by an intriguing heavyweight title fight as Ohio native Stipe Miocic puts his title on the line for the very first time against legendary kick boxer Alistair ‘The Reem” Overeem.

UFC 203 takes place September 10 and features Stipe Miocic vs. Alistair Overeem for the heavyweight title in the main event.
