Next month at UFC 205, Tyron Woodley will make his first welterweight title defense when he meets Stephen Thompson.

Woodley won the title earlier this year when he stopped Robbie Lawler in the first round.

The former Strikeforce title contender and University of Missouri wrestling standout shocked the welterweight division with his stoppage over his American Top Team teammate.

See a complete replay of that contest right here ahead of UFC 205, which takes place November 12 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Eddie Alvarez Believes He Can ‘Easily’ Take Conor McGregor’s Left Hand Away

Conor McGregor will attempt to make history when he goes head-to-head in the main event of UFC 205 with lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, attempting to become the first fighter in the promotion’s history to hold two titles in different weight classes simultaneously.

Alvarez, who won the title back in July with a thunderous first round TKO win over Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 90, recently appeared on the MMA Roasted podcast (courtesy of Fight Sports) to discuss his upcoming clash with ‘The Notorious’ 145-pound champ.

‘The Underground King’ claimed that he himself is responsible for making the fight happen, after countless attempts at dropping McGregor’s name in various media appearances and getting no responses from it:

“I’m the one who made the Conor McGregor fight happen,” he said. “He never had any intention of fighting me. Every time I said his name I didn’t get any response, I didn’t get anything. This is a guy who responds and talks shit to everyone, but every time I talked to the media and tried to drum up a fight or anything like that there’d be no response. So it was obvious that he really didn’t want this fight. It was only when I won the belt that they decided to get a crack at the belt.

“When I joined the UFC I fought the best guys in the division back-to-back-to-back, that was my strategy. I told the media I was tired of getting asked about Conor McGregor, so I told them I could use an easier fight and that’s why it happened.”

McGregor has only suffered one loss since joining the UFC (his UFC 196 second round submission defeat to Nate Diaz in March at welterweight), while his other bouts saw the Irishman’s hand being raised after the SBG Ireland product accumulated six knockouts out of his nine Octagon appearances.

One of the featherweight champ’s most dangerous weapons has been his powerful left hand that has been the downfall of many throughout the former two weight Cage Warriors champ’s career, something Alvarez feels he can ‘easily’ take out of the equation come fight night in November:

“To me, he’s just a left hand,” Alvarez said. “He’s just a guy with a left hand. That’s how I see him. He does something that we call a ‘rock back’ well. Mayweather does it. A lot of Philly fighters do it. He (McGregor) lives and breathes off it. A lot of MMA guys don’t know about these boxing things that they do. This is a move that’s very easily taken away and we’re going to dominate every step of the way.

“Without giving away a gameplan or anything, everything’s taken away with the proper preparation. I’m confident in my coaches, I’m confident in our gameplan and our ability to go out there and do it. We’re just following this gameplan step-by-step.”

Alvarez and McGregor will lock horns in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

Edson Barboza Wants ‘Big Name’ Nate Diaz Next

No. 5-ranked surging lightweight contender Edson Barboza hasn’t competed since scoring an impressive victory over former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez last July, but the Brazilian is apparently looking to get back into the cage sometime soon, and it appears as if he has his eyes set on a big name. “(Nate Diaz) is a big

“(Nate Diaz) is a big name, he’s been in the UFC for a long time, he’s a great fighter. A couple guys are available in my division right now. Diaz is available. (Michael) Chiesa is available. I hope the UFC calls me really soon cause I keep training hard and I hope they call me soon,” Barboza told FOX Sports on Friday.

“These two guys are really good. Michael Chiesa is coming off some really good wins. Nate Diaz is very, very tough. It’s a war. I always step into the Octagon and I train for war and if I fight these two guys, it will be a war.”

While the No. 7-ranked Chiesa has indeed been on a roll as of late, Diaz undoubtedly possesses the bigger name. The Stockton native is currently ranked No. 4 in the 155-pound division and is coming off of a majority decision loss to Conor McGregor in their welterweight rematch at August’s UFC 202. Prior to that, he had scored a shocking submission victory over the Irishman last March.

Continuing on, Barboza once again reiterated that he’d like a ‘big’ fight, and given his place in the rankings, he feels as if he’s dangerously close to a shot at lightweight gold:

“I’m in a good position in the rankings. I need a big fight,” Barboza said. “Eddie (Alvarez) is a good example. He beat two good guys and he got the title shot. I think I’m really close to the title shot. I need one more big fight and then I’d definitely be close to the title shot.

“I’ve been in the UFC for a long time. I think I deserve a big fight to put me close to the title shot.”

Alvarez is set to defend his strap against McGregor at November 12’s UFC 205. Perhaps a bout between Barboza and Diaz would make sense, as it would likely produce a future title contender.

What are your thoughts on this potential clash?

Tyron Woodley: Sage Northcutt Is Faster & More Powerful Than Wonderboy

UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley is headed for the biggest fight of his MMA career when he faces surging No. 1 contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the co-main event of November 12’s blockbuster UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley is headed for the biggest fight of his MMA career when he faces surging No. 1 contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson in the co-main event of November 12’s blockbuster UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

After winning the title with an earth-shaking first round knockout over former champion Robbie Lawler at July 30’s UFC 201, ‘The Chosen One’ will now meet an opponent whom many feel has the perfect to defeat his hard-charging style, as “Wonderboy” used his unique karate-based offense to defeat former title contender Rory MacDonald in his most recent bout at UFC Fight Night 89.

The one-sided decision win secured seven straight wins and a title shot for Thompson, who has finished Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger, and surging middleweight Robert Whittaker during the streak. He may possess the most momentum of any fighter in the Octagon, yet Woodley believes Thompson isn’t even as good as his new training partner.

In a video released on his Youtube channel, Woodley is featured sparring with highly touted UFC lightweight Sage Northcutt. Apparently impressed with ‘Super’ Sage’s skills, Woodley made the bold proclamation that Northcutt is indeed faster, more powerful, and in possession of better takedown defense than the larger and more experienced Thompson (transcribed by Bloody Elbow):

“These young guys, man. Old man got to whip out those new tricks, because they come at you,” Woodley said about Northcutt. “I work with Sage. He’s obviously in a similar style as the opponent I will be fighting against.”

“He, just in my opinion, is just a little bit faster, and his strikes come with a little bit more force. His takedown defense should be better. His power should be better, so I’m actually training with a better version of what I’m going to compete with.”

Those words could (will) evoke the collective ire of the online MMA community in a big way, as Woodley has already been the subject of many an online attack following his win over Lawler, including alleged instances of racism.

But aside from those ridiculous back-and-forths, Northcutt is still very inexperienced compared to Thompson, and has yet to display the pure knockout power that the flashy, pinpoint striking “Wonderboy” has used to win his way to the top of one of MMA’s deepest divisions.

Do you believe Northcutt comes close to outclassing Thompson in the areas Woodley focused on? Watch their training video and decide for yourself:

Leading up to one of the most exciting string of pay-per-view events in UFC history, all eyes are on the New York show. UFC 205 will mark the first event held in NYC, and the promotion isn’t holding back in their efforts on this new territory. Shooting for the most successful pay-per-view ever, the UFC has put together an epic line-up for the Madison Square Garden extravaganza. Preparing to collide in the main event are lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and featherweight boss Conor McGregor.

Only one belt will be on the line, Alvarez’s 155-pound strap, but the ramifications of this fight are truly huge. Coming during a time when money and rankings sit on opposing sides of the fence, Alvarez vs. McGregor is about much more than the title. Potentially seeing the first current two-weight champ and carving a path for the future under WMG, UFC 205 will be historic in many ways.

Joe Rogan’s Two Cents

Ahead of the pivotal UFC 205 main event, UFC color commentator Joe Rogan gives his two cents. Noting the potential improvement in McGregor’s form at lightweight from featherweight or 170 pounds, Rogan also acknowledges the power and endurance of Alvarez. From the latest Joe Rogan Fight Companion (Friday October 21, 2016):

“Eddie Alvarez is a f*cking savage. What he did against Rafael dos Anjos, that combination, the sheer amount of punches. That’s some serious endurance, he’s got that power and he’s a very strong guy for 155. I’m curious to see what Conor looks like at 155, because we haven’t seen him there, in the UFC. We’ve seen 145, and seen him cut no weight and weigh 169 against Nate. That might be the perfect weight for him, it’s entirely possible we might see a better McGregor at 155.”

What About Nurmagomedov?

The conversation took an interesting turn, as Rogan and UFC veteran Yves Edwards discussed top lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. Pointing out similarities between ‘The Eagle’ and Jon Jones’ dominant styles, Rogan says Khabib is a special fighter:

“What about Khabib Nurmagomedov? That guy rag dolled everyone he’s fought. Nurmagomedov is special. What he did to dos Anjos was pretty stunning. Nurmagomedov just grabbed a hold of him and did what he wanted. It’s his technique and his aggression, he’s a scary dude. Demian Maia grapples like that, he grabs guys with this squeezing style, but Khabib is just pure power and aggression. He just smashes you, his ground and pound is horrific. He ragdolls guys in a very unusual way, it’s as totally different style of domination. Good luck out-grappling that dude. His takedown percentage is probably a million percent.”
