UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is set for yet another pay-per-view (PPV) appearance, but this time it won’t be to step into the Octagon.

The former dual-weight champ is set to sit down with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani for a one-hour unscripted interview at EventCity in Manchester, England, next week (Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017). Writemedia will be broadcasting the event for £3.99 ($4.91) on www.notoriouslive.tv, and 5,000 tickets for the event have been sold as well.

Rick Gorgan, a Paradigm Sports UK Representative, had this to say about McGregor’s upcoming PPV event (via Bleacher Report):

“We knew this exclusive sporting showcase would appeal to the rest of the world, and wanted to offer those all over the globe the chance to see the event live. This rare opportunity had to be captured on film considering Conor’s past interview history, and we decided to take it one step further and distribute it globally, meaning fans who are not able to attend the event don’t have to miss out.”

‘The Notorious One’ never fails to put on a show during a PPV event, however, as “live music and a huge night of entertainment” along with a nightclub after-party will accompany the event.

There are plenty of topics for McGregor to cover, including his highly-anticipated return to fighting action, as well as the current status of his rumored superfight boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. Perhaps ‘Mystic Mac’ is preparing to drop a big announcement during the PPV event?

What do you think the interview between Helwani and McGregor will entail? Will you be tuning in on PPV for the event?

Just over two months after his history-making win over Eddie Alvarez at last November’s UFC 205, the MMA world is holding its collective breath for lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s next move.

The face of the UFC was stripped of his featherweight championship before December’s UFC 206, and his name is more in the news right now for his rumored boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr., although it’s been more in the form of “Money” and Dana White running their mouths about it than anything “Notorious” has said.

With McGregor out for an indefinite period of time to welcome his first child, his current home of 155 pounds will also move on in a sense when Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson fight for the interim title at March 4’s UFC 209 from Las Vegas. The winner is expected to meet ‘The Notorious’ in his next fight, but that’s far from anything close to guaranteed considering his unpredictable schedule.

If and when McGregor finally does defend his belt, one top-ranked lightweight doesn’t seem to think he’ll hold onto it for very long. That man is No. 8-ranked Michael Chiesa, who told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on his “5ive Rounds” podcast that McGregor will have to defend his belt at some point:

“Sooner or later, Conor is going to have to come out and fight,” Chiesa said. “Whether he’s taking this hiatus himself or the company is putting him on ice, who knows? But I don’t see him staying champion.”

Chiesa moved to clarify he knows McGregor is highly skilled, but compared him to the elite level of competition he’ll conceivably face upon his return. Based on the most obvious upcoming match-ups, Chiesa believes Nurmagomedov, Ferguson, and even himself are just too big for “The Notorious”:

“I know he’s good. I’m not knocking him. We have to recognize the guy can f—ing fight. But you have to look at the guys coming up in the lightweight division. Tony Ferguson and Khabib, you have to fight the winner of that fight. I mean, dude, you’re good, but you’re going up against a guy who is 24-0, multiple samba world champion, or a guy that would be on a 10-fight win streak.”

“Conor is good, but I really don’t think he’s a true lightweight,” Chiesa continued. “That’s what I’m saying. With the landscape of this division, I don’t see Conor ending his year as champion. And you put me in there, I’m going to drag him to the ground and beat him too. I’m a huge lightweight. I’m as big as Nate or bigger, and we saw how many problems Nate gave him.”

These words may be beginning to sound a bit redundant, as we’ve heard a long list of reasons why McGregor’s next opponent would be the one to shut him down and hand a deflating defeat, only to watch him pass every test – except one – with flying colors. In fact, the one fight McGregor did lose in the UFC, his shocking UFC 196 submission loss to Nate Diaz, was probably the one fans and media members thought featured the lowest odds of him losing given that late replacement Diaz was coming into the fight on 10 days’ notice.

The much larger Diaz gave McGregor more problems at their rematch at UFC 202, yet McGregor escaped with a narrow majority decision win that time around. There’s no question that bigger, rangier lightweights give him a tougher test than the shorter featherweights he’s blasted in the Octagon, but in order for the Irish megastar to lose to any one of the three contenders Chiesa named earlier, he’s going to have to defend his belt – something he hasn’t done a single time in Cage Warriors FC or the UFC.

Will McGregor finally defend one of his titles? And if he does, will he remain the king of the talented 155-pound landscape at the end of 2017?

Conor McGregor’s plan for global domination continues…

After winning his second UFC title against Eddie Alvarez, two-weight champion Conor McGregor drew a line in the sand. Demanding a cut of the UFC’s equity, ‘The Notorious’ said he would not return until he was part owner. Discussion about the Irish star becoming bigger than the UFC continued, and his reported 10-month absence from fighting began. The next two pay-per-view events had a direct impact on McGregor. As the promotion attempted to salvage UFC 206, they stripped the featherweight champion, promoted the interim champ Jose Aldo, and made Max Holloway vs. Anthony Pettis for the junior belt.

Estimates of the UFC 206 PPV buys showed a tanking 150,000. Comparing to UFC 205, which was eight times the amount at 1.3 million, McGregor’s words were ringing in the ears of the new UFC owners. Perhaps this could have been overshadowed if Ronda Rousey was successful in her return. Against Amanda Nunes at UFC 207, ‘Rowdy’ fell in a catastrophic 48-second showing. According to the recent report on ESPN, McGregor’s absence from the octagon doesn’t mean he won’t continue his meteoric rise.

McGregor’s Plans

Under the company name ‘McGregor Sports & Entertainment,’ the infamous Irishman has filed for trademarks against his name and nickname.

The two filings, which were recently posted on the website for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, state that McGregor intends to use the trademarks with products such as aftershave, video games, books, clothing, restaurants, barbershops and health clubs.

Sound familiar? Having been fuelling the rumours of a fight with Floyd Mayweather for over a year now, McGregor is also emulating the boxer’s business tactics.

What Does This Mean?

Well, aside from being able to smell, train, eat and look like Conor McGregor, fans could well see the lightweight boss as part owner of the UFC very soon. How do his latest trademark filings relate to his ownership demands? One word; leverage.

The fantasy boxing match-up between UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. may be slowly turning into reality, but not without the concoction of a bad-blood feud between the two sides first.

‘Money’ stated he wants a $100 million price tag to show up for a boxing match with ‘Notorious,’ and is willing to hand over the UFC champ a paycheck worth no more than $15 million for the super fight. UFC President Dana White made an appearance on The Herd to respond to Mayweather’s offer, countering with a ‘real offer’ of $25 million each and pay-per-view (PPV) points.

During an appearance backstage at this past weekend’s Baduo Jack vs. James DeGale fight (via MMA Fighting), as Jack is signed to Mayweather promotions, the former multiple-time WBO champ explained why $25 million isn’t enough for his services:

“The last time I made $25 million – actually I made more – but the last time I made $25 million was 10 years ago,” Mayweather said. “I’m not bragging or boasting I’m just telling the truth. I’m appreciative and thankful, $25 million is still great money. But for the last, I don’t know how many years, my guaranteed lowest was like, 32, a little bit over 32 [million dollars].

“In the Canelo [Alvarez] fight I made over $100 million in that fight and just in two fights, [Manny] Pacquiao and Canelo, those two fights, somewhere upwards of $400 million. $400 million or better. Sponsorship money leading up to the Pacquiao fight, that week I made 25 to 30 million [dollars]. So these are my numbers. They can say, ‘Floyd’s lying’ all they want to. If I was so desperate and hurting for money I would come back.”

Mayweather would then go on to label White as a ‘small boss’ compared to former UFC owners the Fertitta brothers, and recalled a time where the UFC president used to carry his bags after ‘Money’ would wear the Bullenbeisser patch on his fight trunks for him:

“I don’t want to talk to Dana White,” Mayweather said. “Remember, Dana White, he was a player he was a boss but he was a small boss. The big bosses were the Fertittas. But then the Fertitta’s chose to sell the UFC so Dana is just an employee. Dana White – I like Dana White, I don’t have anything against him – but I can remember Dana White used to hang around me and Jeff Mayweather and carry my bags.

“Dana White, I remember when you used to carry my bags. And remember Dana White, I showed you love. You had the little Bullenbeisser patch I wore on my trunks for you, Dana. I’ve always been good to you. But then all of the sudden he cut his head bald and he’s such a tough guy. He’s such a tough guy.”

The relationship Mayweather is referring to with White dates back 20 years after ‘Money’s’ bronze medal win in the 1996 Olympic games. After making the jump to professional boxing Mayweather ,would wear the Bullenbeisser Boxing equipment patch on his fight shorts for his first few pro bouts, a company then owned by the now-UFC president.

Mayweather would end the interview by asking why White is making more money than McGregor, when it is the heavy-handed Irishman who is going out to engage in combat for 25 minutes or less:

“All I’ve got to say is this, why every time Conor McGregor go out there and fight, Dana White is still an employee but Dana White makes more money than Conor McGregor when McGregor go out there and fight?”

‘Jacare’ Souza: ‘Yoel Romero is The Dirty Fighter & Michael Bisping is The Chicken’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBWxXCDUJLY

One day after calling former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight title holder Luke Rockhold a “chicken,” Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has taken things a step further. The former Strikeforce middleweight champion is now targeting reigning 185-pound champion Michael Bisping, and likely contender Yoel Romero.

Speaking with MMAJunkie.com, “Jacare” said he believes “The Count” will defend his belt against “The Soldier of God.” He didn’t speak highly of either fighter:

“I believe (Bisping vs. Romero) will happen. The dirty one, because Romero is a dirty fighter, against the chicken, the scared one – Bisping. So it will be kind of a weird fight. The dirty (fighter) against the chicken. I believe this will be the fight.”

Whether Souza was referring to Romero’s tainted supplement incident or his cage antics is up for debate.

Souza may have had harsh words for Bisping and Romero, but he was respectful of his next opponent Tim Boetsch. Souza will go toe-to-toe with “The Barbarian” at UFC 208 in Brooklyn, NY. “Jacare” is aware of Boetsch’s dangerous punching power.

“My opponent is trouble. He has a very hard hand – it can make it difficult for any opponent. His hook makes it tough. He’s very strong and his wrestling is very good, as well. So to sum it all up, he’s trouble.”

Many questioned why Boetsch was booked to fight Souza. With higher ranked fighters such as Gegard Mousasi and Robert Whittaker, “The Barbarian” was the last opponent fans expected for “Jacare.” Souza said the options were limited.

“My idea was to fight – that was my goal. I accepted everyone that was offered to me, and I accepted Boetsch. So it was kind of, I had to accept. There’s only that option.”

UFC 208 will be held inside the Barclays Center on Feb. 11. The main event will feature the inaugural women’s featherweight title fight between Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron “The Chosen” One Woodley put his title on the line against No. 1-contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at last November’s UFC 205. After a five round back-and-forth war, Woodley retained his title, although the judges deemed the bout a majority draw.

Due to the controversial conclusion, the two have exchanged words through the media since with Thompson actively campaigning for a rematch. It was announced earlier this week that the two will indeed fight for a second time in the main event of March 4’s UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

With the rematch now set in stone, Woodley admits that Thompson has gotten under his skin over the last few months:

“He got under my skin so much that I’m just going to go ahead and fight the dude,” Woodley said on the newest edition of “The Morning Wood Show” podcast. “He got under my skin that bad where I don’t even care about the ration and the money and what fight makes the most sense. You need to be careful what you ask for. ‘Wonderboy,’ if you want it, come get it. You want to fight? You want to get done worse than you did the first time? Some people have got to be real careful.”

As far as the first fight goes, many feel as if it was an extremely close bout, while many feel as if Thompson should have had his hand raised at the end as well. Woodley, however, feels as if he clearly won the fight:

“Two rounds were completely lopsided, and three rounds outside of that were very close,” he continued. “He never dominated a single round of that fight. So now if you can tell me I did not win either Round 2, Round 3 or Round 5, then I would agree he deserves a rematch. But I do believe I won Round 3. I do believe Round 1 or 4 would be a 10-8. Then on a third category, some people would have stopped that fight. There are three ways I could have won that fight.”

“The Chosen One” appears to be fired up as well as confident heading into the rematch and he warned “Wonderboy” that he’s in for a ‘rude awakening’:

“He’s going to get in that octagon, and he’s going to be in for a rude awakening because if he thought that was something the last time, I’m going all the way up,” Woodley said. “I want him to tremble when I walk past him and him have a flashback of when I knocked him to the canvas and he woke up and the referee was counting ‘A-B-C, 1-2-3’ with him. I’m just tired of these guys that just feel entitled.”

Who do you see walking away with 170-pound gold when Woodley and Thompson lock horns again in March?
