Jose Aldo Reveals Why He’s Reluctant To Get Involved With MMAAA

Just weeks ago the Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Association (MMAAA) took the mixed martial arts (MMA) world by storm, by announcing their formation which featured some of the biggest names in the sport such as Georges St-Pierre, Cain Velasquez, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, Tim Kennedy, and TJ Dillashaw.

While the association isn’t the only one out there fighting for better working conditions for fighters, such as the Mixed Martial Arts Fighters Association (MMAFA) and Professional Fighter’s Association (PFA), UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has revealed (courtesy of MMA Maniathat he’s actually turned down an offer to affiliate himself with the MMAAA due to his current alliance with the MMAFA:

“(MMAAA) invited me to be a part of this association, but I don’t think everything is clear with this association,” Aldo said. “There are others going on, laws in the American Senate as well, so there’s a lot going on to help fighters. When it’s possible for me to be present and be a part of things that will benefit the athletes, I will always fight for us.”

One reason Aldo was hesitant to join the MMAAA is due to the involvement of former Bellator CEO and President Bjorn Rebney, something that has kept other fighters on their toes regarding the association as well:

“This association was created by a former Bellator president, so I don’t know what’s the real function behind it, if it’s something for the fighters,” he continued. “I’m part of one, too, with Randy Couture, Cung Le, that has an open mind to help fighters, not only the ones in the UFC.”

‘Scarface’ feels that the MMAAA seems a little too focused on only UFC fighters, while other organizations such as the MMAFA are here to help mixed martial artists world-wide:

“Our world isn’t focused only in the UFC,” Aldo said. “We have millions of fighters, trillions of fighters that need help. We won’t fight with a promotion just because we’re exclusive there. I fight for everybody, national and international, no matter where they are. I want to help those athletes. Not only those in the UFC, those that are in the big league and can have a better future, but those in the small promotions and need our help.”

Despite threatening retirement earlier this year, it appears as thought Aldo has settled his differences with the UFC for the time being after being promoted undisputed champion after Conor McGregor vacated the featherweight throne. Now the Brazilian must focus his sights on interim 145-pound champ Max Holloway who he is expected to throw down with in Brooklyn at UFC 208 next year.

Set for February 11 2017 in Brooklyn, UFC 208 is quickly becoming stacked. Already featuring five confirmed fights, the New York card will showcase the first ever women’s featherweight title fight. Albeit without Cris Cyborg, the promotion will again make history in NYC. Holly Holm takes on Germaine Da Randamie in the main event, and the winner will enjoy the first ever UFC women’s 145-pound belt. Also taking place at UFC 208 will be a pivotal light-heavyweight scrap between Glover Teixeira and Jarod Cannonier.

Ian McCall and Neil Seery will (hopefully) finally collide, and welterweight prospects Ryan LaFlare and Roan Carneiro have unfinished business.

UFC 208: Holm vs. GDR

With still plenty of work to go in to this steadily growing card, ESPN’s Brett Okamoto revealed a big heavyweight tilt in the making. According to this Tweet, Derrick Lewis and Travis Browne are on a collision course for Brooklyn on February 11.

Black Beast vs. Hapa?

Last appearing at UFC Fight Night 102 in Albany, Derrick Lewis defeated Shamil Abdurakhimov by TKO. ‘Black Beast’ said he was frustrated with his performance, but still extended his win streak to five with four finishes. Travis Browne’s recent UFC form has been a whole different story. Dropping two in a row to Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez, ‘Hapa’ has won just two of his last six bouts.

Once considered a future title contender, Browne’s form really dropped after 2013. Until that point, the big Hawaiian had only lost once in nearly five years, in the three years since he is 2-4. Victory for either man is key in this rumoured bout, but a loss would prove far more costly to Browne, who could easily get dropped for losing three in a row.

Heavyweights Travis Browne and Derrick Lewis are expected to square off at UFC 208, according to a report by ESPN.

Browne (18-5-1) had his two-fight win streak snapped by former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez in July. Lewis (17-4) is on a five-fight win streak that includes a victory over Shamil Abdurakhimov at UFC Fight Night 102 this past Friday night.

UFC 208 takes place February 11 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie have agreed to meet that night for the inaugural UFC female featherweight title.

Cris Cyborg Reacts to UFC Making Featherweight Title Fight Without Her

Tuesday was, if nothing else, a day of mixed emotions for Cristiane Cyborg Justino. During the afternoon, she experienced the high of gaining United States citizenship in a ceremony held in her adopted hometown of Los Angeles. A few hours later, that was followed by the low of the announcement that the inaugural UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship fight at UFC 208 will not involve her, instead pitting Holly Holm against Germaine de Randamie.

Unsurprisingly, she’s not exactly thrilled, as she told MMAFighting’s Guilherme Cruz. While she’s “happy the UFC created my division” after “11 years [that] I’m fighting for women to have the same rights as men with several divisions,” her happiness with the development ends there. “Everybody knows I’m the featherweight champion. “I’m undefeated for 10 years in my division. They put this belt only to sell the fight for the new MMA fans. For an example, Holly is coming off two consecutive losses and will fight for the belt. The real fight fans know what’s real.”

When asked if she is optimistic about fighting the Holm-de Randamie, Justino wasn’t getting her hopes up. “I have no idea, there are no rules in MMA,” she said. “The last fight in the men’s 145-pound division, a 10-0 fighter fought a guy who was 1-5 in his last fights. Other fighters like me have to wait for a title fight. I’m fighting for my division for 10 years, and until yesterday Dana said there were no women. This is our reality.”

Justino had been offered fights with both fighters on the same card, citing the need for a longer camp the make the weight properly after her last cut, to 140 pounds, caused health problems. Realistically speaking, Holm pretty much turned down the fight, as she would only agree to a bout at 138 pounds, even lower than the 140 pound mark Cyborg is no longer willing to cut to. Germaine de Randamie, however, was fully on board for a 145 pound title fight with Cyborg.

Cyborg is still technically the Invicta FC Featherweight Champion, and was not defending the title as of late while the promotion attempted to build new challengers. She had been competing in Invicta while under UFC contract, with the latter covering her fight purses.

The UFC didn’t seem interested in adding a third female division to the promotion.

That has changed.

At UFC 208, Holly Holm will face Germaine de Randamie for the inaugural featherweight title.

Holm (10-2) finds herself on a two-fight skid, falling to Valentina Shevchenko via decision and dropping the UFC female bantamweight belt to Miesha Tate this past March.

Prior to the losses, the former boxing world champion had won all 10 of her pro fights, including a knockout of Ronda Rousey for the belt in 2015.

De Randamie (7-3) has scored back-to-back TKO finishes since a loss to current UFC bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. She is 4-1 over her last five and 3-1 inside the Octagon.

UFC 208 takes place February 11 from Brooklyn.
