Earlier today we reported that Holly Holm and her team were considering appealing her UFC 208 loss to Germaine de Randamie from Brooklyn last weekend (Sat., February 11, 2017), a bout where “The Iron Lady” was seen nailing Holm with some incredibly hard punches after the bell in both the second and third rounds.

Word broke from MMAFighting.com that Holm will officially appeal the loss, issuing this statement as part of a full complaint about the officiating job by referee Todd Anderson, an inexperienced MMA official who failed to fully separate the fighters and did not take a point away from de Randamie for either foul:

“We respectfully request the commission review referee Anderson’s failure to assess a foul and render a decision regarding a point deduction following Round 2, and failure to assess a foul and a point deduction following Round 3, and determine an appropriate result.”

Holm’s controversial manager Lenny Fresquez had his own view of the situation, believing Randamie should give Holm a rematch (which she’s already discussed):

“It was blatant. Very blatant. I hope Germaine is a lady of her word and gives Holly the immediate rematch she promised her.”

With her inaugural run as the first-ever UFC women’s featherweight champion off to a very rocky start, de Randamie apologized for her transgression and offered Holm a rematch.

The New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) reversing the decision at UFC 208’s main event, which was already a highly criticized contest, would be about the only thing that could make the opinions of the card any worse, and would tie up the already uncertain women’s featherweight division with a potential rematch.

But hey, outside of the champion meeting Cris Cyborg (whose return is currently unknown) there aren’t many fights to be made in the division anyway, right?

With the lack of buzz going into UFC 208, it no doubt affected fans choosing to tune in and watch the event. The viewership numbers for the event are in. The prelims, which were headlined by Belal Muhammad and Randy Brown, drew 874,000, which is down from 1,511 million viewers that UFC 207 drew.

UFC 208 took place on February 11, 2017, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The UFC Fight Pass prelims started at 7:30 p.m. ET while the FOX Sports 1 prelims started at 8 p.m. ET. The main card kicked off on PPV at 10 p.m. ET.

The pre-fight show drew 259,000 viewers while the post-fight show did 207,000 viewers. The weigh-in show didn’t crack the top 150 shows on Friday, which is not a good sign. With the post-fight show not doing good numbers is a bad sign for PPV buys as that meant that a lot of people were not interested enough to hang out and catch the results/highlights of the actual PPV main card after the event aired. Usually when a PPV event does a good/great PPV buy rate, then the prelims and the post-fight show does good viewership numbers.

The event was headlined by the inaugural UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship bout between former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie. Anderson Silva vs. Derek Brunson in a middleweight bout served as the co-main event. Rounding out the main card was Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Tim Boetsch in a middleweight bout, Glover Teixeira vs. Jared Cannonier in a light heavyweight bout and Dustin Poirier vs. Jim Miller in a lightweight bout.

The UFC returns to FOX Sports 1 this weekend with UFC Fight Night 105 on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The main event will be a heavyweight matchup between Derrick Lewis and Travis Browne.

Holly Holm’s Team Could Appeal Loss To Germaine de Randamie

After quite a controversial fight at UFC 208, Holly Holm finds herself in an undesirable position. Coming off three straight losses, ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ hasn’t tasted victory since December 2015. Following her stunning knockout of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, Holm had stated she didn’t want to be defined by that sole moment. Unfortunately for the ex-champion, that was the last time she has shined in the octagon. Back-to-back losses against Miesha Tate and Valentina Shevchenko marked a 2016 that Holm would probably rather forget.

With the making of the women’s featherweight division came an opportunity of a lifetime. Both Holm and opponent Germaine de Randamie were poised to make history. Sadly it didn’t play out how anyone had hoped. After being rocked by clean strikes after the bell in round two, Holm would go on to lose by decision. The referee and judges supplied by the New York Athletic Commission have faced heavy criticism since. The same incident happened after round three, although Holm was clearly rocked by the earlier infraction.

Appeal

During what was meant to be a milestone in the new division’s history, we saw two examples of questionable officiating. Apologizing after the fact, ‘The Iron Lady’ stated the strikes at the end of round two and three were unintentional. All the same, many fans felt ‘GDR’ should have been deducted at least one point. According to a report on MMAFighting.com, Holm’s manager is considering an appeal of the lamented result at UFC 208:

“We’re definitely looking into our options,” Fresquez said. “We’re looking into the options we have with the commission. We don’t know the necessary process yet. … It’s definitely an avenue we’ll be exploring.”

Rematch?

Amid the debate about the result, the newly crowned 145-pound champion offered Holm a rematch. Should the result be overturned, then a second bout would surely be imminent. If not, at least ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ has an avenue to a do-over, in theory.

Would it be fair to say that de Randamie’s win should be overturned? Cast your mind back to ‘stoolgate’ featuring Yoel Romero and Tim Kennedy, is the UFC 208 main event on par? Romero’s victory over Kennedy stands to this day. Stay tuned as we bring you updates when this story evolves.
