After UFC 208, there was only one true winner…

Heading in to the main event of last night’s UFC 208, there were questions aplenty. Regarding the main event, Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie had a big responsibility. Competing for the inaugural women’s featherweight title, Holm and ‘GDR’ had more than just the 145-pound title on the line. In the absence of Cris Cyborg, last night’s main event needed to prove there was more legitimate talent at women’s featherweight. Unfortunately, UFC 208 did almost the exact opposite.

Arguably one of the poorest pay-per-views in recent history, UFC 208 featured tons of controversial reffing and judging, and many decisions. Thankfully Ronaldo Souza was booked in a squash match against Tim Boetsch, or we wouldn’t have seen a single finish all night. Anyway, the main event followed suit, devoid of excitement, heavy with fouls and the judging was debated afterwards. Given her first opportunity to challenge Cyborg after winning against Holm, de Randamie said she’d be out for a while with hand surgery. Great.

Cris Cyborg Wins

Attending UFC 208 last night was featherweight wrecking ball Cris Cyborg. The Brazilian’s recent USADA drama will reportedly be over very soon, as a retroactive exemption is likely. Next up on the podium for the title she should have already fought for, Cyborg’s stock rose immeasurably in the wake of UFC 208’s main event catastrophe.

Cyborg took to Twitter to challenge her next opponent, but it wasn’t de Randamie.

Although this is a great fight, the truth is that Cyborg should’ve had the 145 division built for her. As talented as Holm and ‘GDR’ have proven to be, they shouldn’t have been facing each other for that belt.

Next

We’ll have to wait and see how long de Randamie will be out, but Cyborg clearly doesn’t plan on waiting. At a time when the UFC is lacking on ‘big stars’ to fill main events, their hottest female prospect will be headed back to Invicta FC. Finally created, and already on hold, the UFC women’s featherweight division got off to a stinking start this weekend.

And…first!

Germaine de Randamie is the new, and inaugural, UFC women’s featherweight champion. She got the unanimous decision to get her hand raised against former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm.

Up next? That’s difficult to say. It’s a new division without many signings. It’s why two former bantamweights moved up to fight for the title in the first place. It’s incredibly shallow.

In the co-main event, Anderson Silva picked up his first win since 2012 when he got the nod over Derek Brunson.

Ten fights on the card, and nine went to the scorecards. It was not a banner evening for the leader in MMA. But it still got results that move the divisions forward. The matchmakers need to get to work, and we are here to assist them with their duties.

Here are the matches to make following UFC 208 in Brooklyn.

After a rough night in New York, Derek Brunson has some things on his mind…

Facing arguably the greatest fighter of all-time at UFC 208, Derek Brunson had the chance of a lifetime. Defeating Silva, even at this late stage in his career, would have propelled Brunson through the rankings. Going by the numbers, the 33-year old wrestler outstruck Silva at a higher percentage of accuracy. Scoring two takedowns along the way, it appeared Brunson had done enough to secure victory. Keeping in line with the odd theme of UFC 208, ‘The Spider’ was awarded the controversial decision win.

After all was said and done, we’ve seen stranger and more outrageous decisions than the co-main event. The loss has clearly frustrated Brunson, who now has been without victory since September 2016. Taking to his Facebook page after last night’s fight, Brunson vented to his fans:

Agree?

Shortly after the co-main event, UFC president Dana White said he scored the fight for Brunson. As per MMAJunkie.com:

“I had Brunson winning,” White said on FS1’s UFC 208 post-fight show. “I actually had the fight one (round) to one going into the third round, and I gave the third round to Brunson.”

What’s Next?

Unfortunately for Brunson, his five-fight winning streak seems a lifetime ago. Although he was unlucky not to get the nod against Silva, it doesn’t change the fact he’s lost two consecutively. For ‘The Spider,’ a much-needed win will boost his stock, but not by a great amount. At 41 years old, Silva can clearly still hang in the octagon, but his killer instinct is beginning to diminish. Another pay-per-view in the books, and arguably one of the worst in terms of entertainment. Brunson is not the only casualty of the controversy involved in UFC 208 though, just ask Holly Holm.

UFC 208 was a generally terrible card and the night ended fittingly, with a controversial main event between Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie.

In one of the worst officiating displays in recent UFC history, referee Todd Anderson looked the other way on two separate late hit incidents by De Randamie, and he was notably quick to break up Holm‘s attempts to work in the clinch.

This helped the Dutch fighter secure a unanimous 48-47 decision victory to become the inaugural UFC women’s featherweight champion, and it also resulted in a tidal wave of criticism directed at the event’s officials. UFC President Dana White was quick to co-sign that sentiment, and puts the blame squarely on the New York State Athletic Commission.

“I feel like the ref from New York shouldn’t be reffing a main event fight,” he said on Fox Sports 1 in an interview with Megan Olivi. “They don’t have enough experience. He should not have been in there. But, again, we don’t make those decisions. The commission does, and it was a bad decision by them. And if that guy takes a point for hitting after the bell, it’s a draw.”

In 1997, MMA was famously banned in dozens of states and largely forced off television following the controversial “there are no rules” early days of the UFC. While the sanctions would be lifted state-by-state as time went on, New York was infamously slow to legalize MMA, holding out until 2016.

While the UFC was quick to celebrate this by booking four events in the state, there have been noticeable growing pains for the New York State Athletic Commission as it expands into MMA. Those struggles came to a head at UFC 208, which saw a slew of mistakes by the judges, referees and commission.

Holm was likely the hardest hit by those miscues but if anyone is expecting the promotion to help set things right…think again.

“Yeah, [Cris] Cyborg’s next,” White flatly said when asked what the future holds for De Randamie. “She’s got some hurdles to get over first, but, like I said earlier in the week, it was looking good for her…I think Holly will probably go to 135 again.”

That’s rough for Holm, who is now riding a three-fight losing streak since famously running through Ronda Rousey at UFC 193. But, of course, as one of the few legitimate draws in women’s MMA, she’s never too far away from another shot at gold.

On the main card of last night’s (Sat. February 11, 2017) UFC 208 pay-per-view (PPV) two of the lightweight division’s finest went to war inside the Octagon, when Dustin Poirier met longtime mixed martial arts (MMA) veteran Jim Miller.

In the first round Poirier really brought the pressure to Miller, who wasn’t shy to throw a few bombs himself. After a few minutes of an epic slugfest Poirier seemed to get the better of Miller and take the round.

Poirier opened up the second round with another flurry of tremendous pressure, looking to finish the fight win big shots and refusing to reserve his energy. Following a few big swings ‘The Diamond’ began to take some heavy breaths and eat some nasty leg kicks, which would play a huge factor in the third round.

Miller capitalized on Poirier’s massively swollen leg and continued his attack with low kicks, before getting taken down and pressured against the corner of the cage. Though he was able to flash in the final five minutes of the fight, ‘The Diamond’ would ultimately walk away with the decision win.

Longtime former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was looking for a big comeback win when he met Derek Brunson in the co-main event of tonight’s (February 11, 2017) UFC 208 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

And he got just that in a close call on the judges’ scorecards.

Despite Brunson out-landing Silva by a sizable margin of 127 to 57 total strikes, ‘The Spider’s’ takedown defense was on point as he stuffed 9 of Brunson’s 11 attempts, landing crisp jabs and counter throughout to earn enough for a unanimous decision nod. It certainly won’t come without a fair share of controversy, but for now, Silva is back.
