Tyron Woodley is sick of all the critics of his lackluster (and controversial) UFC 209 win over Stephen ‘Wonderboy” Thompson, and he isn’t bashful about letting everyone know it.

However, he shouldn’t be surprised when his frequent media foil, UFC President Dana White, fires back with some harsh opinions of his own.

Well-known for blaming racism and the UFC’s poor job of promoting him as reasons for his low popularity, Woodley told TMZ Sports he would be a “tough guy to deal with” in the future after he found it off-putting White actually picked Thompson in their boring close call from Las Vegas last Saturday night:

“Dana White thought I won the first fight but he didn’t publicly come out and say he thought I won the first fight, so I thought it was a bit distasteful for the promoter to say he thought [Thompson] won the fight. That’s like me coming out and saying as a fighter that I don’t think he didn’t do a good job of promoting the fight. Which I don’t. I don’t think they’ve done a good job of promoting me as champion.”

The polarizing Woodley continues to drum up his own unique version of headlines – for better or for worse – that almost always focus on how others are treating him, something that has fans scratching their heads. Therefore it wasn’t surprising to hear White fire back, also to TMZ, with a hard-hitting, blunt statement urging Woodley to focus on his next performance and remember who the man who calls the shots is:

“Tyron Woodley came out and said he was going to destroy Thompson and there would be no question he was the champ.

“Well guess what? There’s questions again.

“Let me tell you what…when you have a performance like you did at 209 and you get booed for five straight rounds and then people are booing so loud you can’t even do your interview, you should probably just take your lumps and move on. Get your next fight as fast as you can and try to put that performance behind you. There’s one guy around here who calls the shots and as soon as you learn that, the better off you’ll be.”

Ouch. After much of the pre-fight hype surrounding Woodley vs. Thompson II was fixated on White and Woodley calling each other ‘drama queens’ in the media, this exchange suggests that ongoing saga isn’t likely to end soon.

But as the polarizing exec said, there’s only one man who calls the shots in the UFC. Like him or not, White may have a point about what the hated welterweight champion can do to better his promotion and treatment, yet nothing is guaranteed in the fast-paced, cutthroat UFC world.

The rigors of being champ could just be getting to ‘The Chosen One,’ as even he admitted the pressure is building.

UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley successfully defended his title this past weekend (March 4, 2017) with a majority decision win over Stephen Thompson in their rematch. The bout, however, was a lackluster fight at best, and Woodley has certainly felt the criticism from fans.

In addition to the criticism, it appears as if Woodley has begun to feel the pressure of being a champion after his first title defense, and he recently opened up regarding the topic:

“When I talk about carrying my shield and going into battle, and I think about all the distractions, all the ways out, all the people that want to see me lose, it’s a lot of pressure,” Woodley said at the UFC 209 post-fight press conference.

“People don’t understand that – you think you got (the belt) and your life is changed. To be honest, my life was a little bit better before I had the belt.”

Woodley hasn’t received the same love from fans as other champions have in the past, but he also hasn’t been afraid to open up his mouth regarding controversial topics. As a champion, “The Chosen One” feels as if he has a duty, which is why the pressure is weighing so heavily on him:

“I just think that it’s a lot of pressure as a champion,” Woodley said. “You’ve got to separate yourself. You want to be the best in the world. You want to wear the gold. It comes with a lot. It comes with a lot on your platter. It comes with a lot of expectations, a lot of obligations. And I feel at a certain level you have a duty, and I feel like part of the time my duty is to, you know, be honest, and if I see something that’s incorrect, speak on it.

“If I see something that’s right, congratulate that as well. And in our society, everyone doesn’t like to hear the truth all the time. And when you speak the truth sometimes, people are either sensitive or insensitive and, as we all know, I see all you guys quiet, don’t want to ask me the wrong questions. Sometimes I get a little bit of a bad rep for just speaking up on things I think are true.”

What are your thoughts on Woodley as a fighter and as a champion?

UFC lightweight title contender Tony Ferguson took the classy way out when when he reacted to his anticipated UFC 209 interim title fight against undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov being called off last Friday.

However, that doesn’t mean “El Cucuy” is going to angle for a fourth attempt to fight the oft-injured “Eagle.” Ferguson told TMZ Sports he believes he will be next in line for the Holy Grail of MMA bouts, a sure to be massive lightweight championship fight against champ Conor McGregor:

“Conor’s next. I hear he might be next. There’s nobody else in line, buddy. I just want to fight. I’m ready to go.”

Ferguson has a strong point when he suggested there’s “no one else in line” in terms of true lightweight rank, as the promotion will almost certainly be hesitant to book Nurmagomedov in a high-profile title fight anytime soon after his latest pullout.

Where “El Cucuy” is a bit off base is suggesting he’s the only man in line for McGregor, as “The Notorious” is of course aiming for the huge payday of his oft-rumored boxing super fight with Floyd Mayweather.

It seems a mere eventuality, but that’s keeping McGregor out of the octagon, where several more high-profile fights with names like Tyron Woodley, Georges St-Pierre, a trilogy match with Nate Diaz, or even his brother Nick Diaz all provide tantalizing potential and would arguably each outgross a McGregor-Ferguson lightweight title match-up.

With that the case, Ferguson left the door open for quite possibly not facing McGregor next, adding that he does not care whom he fights:

“It doesn’t matter man. We’ll see what they say.”

What will the UFC say? They may not have much of one if the brash Irish megastar is truly holding out for the mega-payday that comes along with facing an undefeated once-in-a-generation star like Mayweather.

And if he does get a check worth between $50 to $200 million, what incentive would McGregor have to ever return to the UFC?

Fallout: Woodley vs Thompson Explained And A Middleweight Fight No One Wanted

The main event of UFC 209 was certainly a tough one to watch as we saw two of the best welterweights engage in a staring contest for nearly the entirety of their championship fight. I kid of course, but seriously, Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson were so gun shy during the main event that it felt like neither man was doing their best to prove they were deserving welterweight champion of the world. It’s easy to say that of course, but the reality is that by the time either man decided to pick up the pace the fight was over, which left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth.

While I may have had the fight scored for Stephen Thompson, Tyron Woodley did do the most damage once again. After long periods of inactivity which saw Thompson pot shot and score points in the first and second frame, Woodley finally decided to do something in the third round with a takedown. He scored points on the ground but nothing significant and Thompson was soon back on his feet. Round four saw Thompson once again resort to his death by a thousand cuts game plan before being roughed up in the fifth round by a well time Woodley counter.

Thompson should have done a bit more as he found himself frozen in the southpaw stance for extended periods of time. Some jabs from the orthodox stance followed by a stance switch and sidekicks to the body and thigh would have made for more shots landed and more opportunities for Woodley to open himself up for counters. And therein lies the problem with this match up in the first place. With both men being counter fighters, both Woodley and Thompson have the tendency to wait for opportunities. This waiting game only led to long periods of feinting and set up (mostly on the part of Thompson) with no real meaningful strikes being thrown or landed. Love it or hate it, Woodley remained the undisputed champion Saturday night.

Perhaps even more interesting than the UFC 209 main event this past weekend was the announcement of Michael Bisping versus Georges St-Pierre for the middleweight title.

But why?

Yes, it’s an interesting fight that could make for some fireworks, but what are we sacrificing to see such this match up? While it may be a fight that gets casual fans excited, you have to consider the fact that Michael Bisping isn’t fighting the best of the best in his weight class which is the point of being champion. Yes, it’s prize fighting and athletes deserve to be paid for putting their lives on the line in the cage, and make no mistake this is a big money fight. But all this match does is hold up the rest of the middleweight division. Yoel Romero will either be on the shelf or have to fight to keep his spot in line. Jacare Souza will fight Robert Whittaker, which is admittedly a great match up. But what does the division gain with this match? An even more important question, what happens if Georges St-Pierre wins?

He’s not a massive middleweight. Hell, he wasn’t even a massive welterweight when he was competing. If he somehow gets past Michael Bisping you have to imagine that he’ll have some trouble doing battle with massive middleweights like Luke Rockhold, Yoel Romero, Jacare Souza and other big men of their ilk. The reality is, GSP is likely one and done at middleweight with a win or a loss. A loss is easy to figure out. A win means that he’ll likely vacate and move on while the division will essentially be forced into some kind of tournament situation of sorts to decide the next champion. It’s a fight no one asked for and one that will likely only cause more chaos moving forward. Still doesn’t mean it won’t be enjoyable.

What were your thoughts on the Woodley/Thompson main event and the announcement of Bisping vs St-Pierre?
