Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones first fought at UFC 182 in Jan. 2015 with Jones’ then held 205-pound title on the line after months and months of bad blood between the two. Ultimately, Jones scored a unanimous decision victory over Cormier to retain his title.

Fast forward to present time and Cormier is the reigning light heavyweight titleholder, while Jones is currently serving out a suspension that will end in July. The two have been scheduled to rematch multiple times, but it has never come to fruition, although it’s likely that the rematch will take place upon Jones’ return, as Cormier defended his title for the second time against Anthony Johnson last weekend (April 8, 2017) at UFC 210.

Ahead of this expected rematch, the rivalry between the two has begun to heat up again and Jones recently took to his official Instagram account to take a shot at Cormier’s UFC 210 weigh-in where he originally weighed in at 206.2 pounds, which is obviously over the light heavyweight limit:

Anthony Johnson may have retired after his submission loss to light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier at last weekend’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210, but he has still elected to appeal the weigh-in debacle that took place prior to the event.

During the early weigh-in session, Cormier showed up with just minutes to spare before weighing in over the 205-pound limit at 206.2 pounds. He then left the stage only to return minutes later and somehow weigh in at 205 pounds. Many have said that Cormier had his hands on the towel that was held around him, which could have helped him make the weight.

Either way, Johnson has filed an appeal to the New York State Athletic Commission in which he requests 20% of Cormier’s fight purse, while also asking that “DC” be stripped of his title.

Check out the appeal below courtesy of MMAFighting.com:

“While Mr. Cormier’s weight loss of 1.2lbs is within the acceptable guidelines, the time it took him to lose it, less than 2 minutes, should have raised some concern and the scrutiny of the medical officials at the weigh-in. Losing 1.2 lbs. in 2 minutes, which calculates to over a 30lb. weight loss per hour, not only violates the letter of 19 NYSCRR 208.14 but the spirit of it. Mr. Cormier should have been examined by the medical officials assigned to the weigh-in to ensure that he was physically fit enough to fight the next day and to explain how he achieved such a substantial weight loss in so short a period. Since he was not required to do so on April 8, 2017, the NYSAC should require him to do so now, particularly considering his curious towel holding while on the scale.

“It is clear, that in the state of New York, a fighter must weigh in and conduct himself in the best interest of the sport. Not only do both fighters deserve to be absolutely sure that his/her opponent has weighed in and made their contracted weight, but the general public and sport of mixed martial arts require that a fair and honest weigh-in is conducted for the integrity of any fight. Unfortunately, in the case, Anthony Johnson, the general public, and the sport of mixed martial arts were deprived of a fair and honest weigh-in and a true championship fight when Daniel Cormier was allowed to grab the towels held in front of him for privacy purposes only while his official weight was being determined.

“Daniel Cormier is a well decorated wrestler having wrestled, starting in high school, and all the way up to the highest level in the Olympics. He has had 20 professional fights. Before each and every wrestling match or professional mixed martial arts fight, Daniel Cormier was required to weigh in and meet an agreed upon weight. If he failed to do so, he was aware of the consequences. Given this illustrious wrestling and fighting history, Daniel Cormier keenly understands the importance of a fair and honest weigh-in, yet he chose to, inexplicably, grab the towels in front of him while on the scale. He must be called upon to explain, under oath, to the NYSAC, Anthony Johnson, the general public, the UFC, his fellow fighters, and the sport of mixed martial arts, the reason for his actions at the weigh-in on April 8, 2017.

“After such sworn testimony, if Mr. Cormier could not, would not, or did not satisfactorily provide an evidence and fact based explanation for his conduct, then he should be disciplined for his action by the NYSAC to preserve the integrity of the sport. Should Mr. Cormier be subject to discipline, while it is clear he could be suspended for his actions, at a minimum, Daniel Cormier should be ordered to pay 20% of his fight purse to Anthony Johnson and should be stripped of his UFC Men’s Light Heavyweight Title for failing to make weight on April 8, 2017.”

Do you feel as if Johnson’s appeal should be honored by the NYSAC?

It may be true that mixed martial arts (MMA) presents some of the most elated highs and crushing emotional lows of any sport, but there were an unusual number of the latter at last weekend’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210 from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

The pay-per-view (PPV) card was home to one of the most controversial endings in recent memory in its co-main event, and also featured no less than two longtime stars retiring, including top-ranked light heavyweight Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, who lost to current champion Daniel Cormier in the main event.

A strange scene unfolded when it appeared that Johnson’s coaches had left his side when he announced his shocking retirement, but in the just-released “UFC 210: The Thrill and the Agony” from the UFC, fans can see that was anything but the case, as Johnson and Hooft shared an emotional embrace where “Rumble” admitted he made a big mistake.

Many accused “Rumble” of packing it in and facing Cormier in an area he knew he would lose, but the video appears to show that the fan favorite fighter cared very much about winning what will be his final MMA fight for now.

Check out the video chronicling the highs and lows of a card that embodied ‘the thrill and the agony’ here:

Charles Oliveira Reacts To UFC 210 Suspension

There were plenty of ultra-strange goings on in the days leading up to and during last Saturday’s (April 8, 2017) UFC 210 from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, but it didn’t seem like lightweight Charles Oliveira’s celebration following his submission over Will Brooks was going to be among them.

However, that just the case when word arrived yesterday that Oliveira had been suspended for approximately two months for jumping onto the cage in the seconds after his first-round win.

Although the suspension probably won’t affect the turnaround for his next match, Oliveira was disappointed about the situation while addressing it to MMA Junkie, adding that he only jumped over it for a brief amount of time:

“I was super sad, actually. After a fight like that, of how it unfolded and how I won – and, man, I jumped there. It was a matter of fraction of seconds. I jumped and got right back in, practically.

“I jumped right next to the cage door, just to hug my cornerpeople and got back in, and the guys issued a punishment. I think there was no need for that. But what are you going to do? It happens.”

Oliveira’s excitement at beating former Bellator champion Brooks was understandable, even more so because it snapped a downward-spiraling 1-3 run where Oliveira also missed weight for the alarming third and fourth times in his UFC run. The state of New York has proven to put up with no nonsense – or in some cases, nonsense – in their still-developing style of regulating MMA after fighting was only legalized there last year.

That includes suspending fighters for celebrating by jumping on the cage, which they did to Yoel Romero at UFC 205 and now Oliveira. ‘Do Bronx’ chalked it up to a lesson learned and shifted his focus towards moving his career forward:

“It’s something new to learn: not to jump out of the cage, regardless of it being quick, or just a little bit,” Oliveira said. “It’s not going to interfere in anything, hopefully.

“God knows all things, as it’s always been in my life. But I’m ready. When the UFC wants me to fight, I’ll be ready.”
