Former UFC Heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum was scheduled to rematch Cain Velasquez this past December at UFC 207, but Velasquez was forced to withdraw from the bout after failing to receive his medical license. “Vai Cavalo” was then slated to meet Ben Rothwell at the upcoming UFC 211 card, which is set for May 13, 2017, but Rothwell was recently flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation, leading the UFC to scrap the bout.
Now, Werdum is expecting to face Velasquez or possibly Alistair Overeem in July, but he is also preparing for UFC 211 in case something goes wrong with the main event, which will feature a heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic and Junior Dos Santos:
“I was ready for May 13 fight, Ben Rothwell, but USADA got to him and I don’t know what happened,” said Werdum via “The MMA Hour.” “It’s very bad because I was waiting for this fight because he talk a lot of shit. Now, I have a lot fights canceled, last one with Cain Velasquez. Now, I am just waiting for the next one. I think the next one is either Overeem or Cain Velasquez in July.
“But, I started my camp for maybe you know, the last year we have a lot of injuries, and I don’t what Stipe or ‘Cigano’ to get injured, but it happens when you have a lot of hard training,” he added. “For May 13, I am there for sure to watch this fight, maybe if guys call me I will be waiting for this fight.”
Who would you like to see Werdum face off with next?
Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is ready to get back on the horse. ‘The Underground King’ went on a nice three-fight win streak after dropping a unanimous decision to Donald Cerrone in his UFC debut, earning victories over Gilbert Melendez, former 155-pound champ Anthony Pettis, and Rafael dos Anjos to secure the lightweight title.

His first title defense against Conor McGregor didn’t go as planned, however, as he suffered a second round finish at the hands of the Irish knockout artist in a rather lopsided affair.
After having four months to regroup the former lightweight champ is ready to get back inside the Octagon and attempt to climb back atop the 155-pound mountain, after a ‘disastrous’ chapter in his life as he described it to Brian Stann on his Sirius XM Rush show Toe-2-Toe(quotes via MMA Fighting):
“I had a bad night in November, and no problem. I got back on the horse about six weeks ago, met back up with my coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, Mark Henry and everybody, and we formulated a plan to come back to take over the division that I believe is mine… It was a small chapter in my full book that will be my career. It was a disastrous chapter but now we get to write some new good ones.”
After suffering that loss to McGregor, Alvarez found himself searching for a reason why he should return to the Octagon, and after four months of deliberation, he’s found that reason:
“I made a lot of money and I won a lot of world titles. I really feel that right now is the time in my career to dig deep because in the past it was very simple to pinpoint a reason why: my children. I needed to do something for the people that are looking up to me. So I found the last couple of months I needed to dig deep to find even more of a ‘why’ to move forward, although I’ve accomplished what I’ve accomplished. I’ve done that and I’m excited. I’m rejuvenated about the opportunity to get back into the cage and show what I’m made of.”
Alvarez will return to Octagon action on a stacked UFC 211 pay-per-view (PPV) card from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, against No. 10-ranked Dustin Poirier in a bout that is certainly expected to be a thrilling affair. Alvarez believes taking on a fighter who brings it to his opponents the way ‘The Diamond’ does will pull the best fight possible out of himself:
“He made a lot of noise with the Jim Miller fight. He’s been putting on some great shows so I’m excited to get back in the cage with someone like that, someone of his style. I need a good fight like that in me. I have one in me right now, so I’m excited.”

Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has suffered back-to-back stoppage losses, but she still holds the record for most title defenses by a female with six. Former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey has suffered back-to-back stoppage losses, but she still holds the record for most title defenses by a female with six.
Reigning strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk has currently defended her 115-pound title four consecutive times and she’s aiming to break Rousey’s record:
“I want that record,” Jedrzejczyk said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I want this female record, which is six title defenses straight. And then I will look up to the guys’ (record).”
The record for most title defenses overall is held by Anderson Silva, who defended his middleweight title 10 consecutive times, but flyweight king Demetrious Johnson will look to tie that record when he defends his 125-pound title against Wilson Reis next month.
Jedrzejczyk will look to add another title defense to her resume when she meets Jessica Andrade in the co-main event of May 13’s UFC 211 from Dallas, Texas. In preparation for her upcoming bout, Jedrzejczyk has been sure to focus strictly on her training rather than her media obligations, which some feel was a main factor in Rousey’s downfall:
“Every fighting career is different,” Jedrzejczyk said. “We all are different. Our lives are different. But the thing is, of course I learned some (from Rousey’s situation), but I’m trying to be smart for myself. There was a time when I could fly to Poland for 10 days, do like seven days of media, I slept like six hours a day, but (coach) Katel (Kubis) was with me and we had amazing times during the training between obligations. But the thing is, it was time for it. Now it’s time to just get ready for the fight. Eight-and-a-half weeks, I will [focus only on] getting ready for UFC 211, and the thing is, no one is going to get my attention.
“There is no option that you’re going to put a million dollars in front of me and I will go with you because of the money. No, I will choose to put on great workout and just get better until the fight. I am focused on my camp, I am focused on myself. I am selfish. I’m here in Florida by myself. I left my fiancée and my family there (in Poland), but they understand. They support me and I’m calm because I know they’re waiting for me, but I have good people here and I can be focused just on the camp. So, people, don’t get crazy when people offer you money for sponsorships. First, we are fighters, and we must sure that we’re going to be ready for the fight.”
Do you expect ‘Joanna Champion’ to continue to hold the reigns to the 115-pound division?
