Tony Ferguson Reportedly Set For Big Fight – And It’s Not Khabib

Top-ranked UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson may finally have a fight in the works, and for the first time in what seems like years (even though that’s not the case), it’s not against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Top-ranked UFC lightweight Tony Ferguson may finally have a fight in the works, and for the first time in what seems like years (even though that’s not the case), it’s not against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Yesterday, Ariel Helwani revealed during The MMA Hour (via FanSided) that the UFC is targeting Ferguson vs. No. 7 Kevin Lee for October 7’s UFC 216. The fight has not been made official for the event from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as of yet.

If it is made official, it would mark somewhat of a departure from at least what seemed like would happen, which was the promotion re-signing Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson for an unprecedented fourth time, especially with the two top 155-pound foes waging verbal warfare on social media as of late.

But as Ferguson so bluntly put it (at least in his words), Nurmagomedov is still not physically ready to fight ‘El Cucuy’ even seven months after he was forced out of their interim title bout at March’s UFC 209 when he depleted his body attempting to make 155 pounds. In the months since, Ferguson, who is currently riding a division-best nine-fight win streak, was linked to a rivalry with fan favorite Nate Diaz, and also seen on several media outlets trying to promote himself, but no one has been willing to step up and fight him.

That is, until now if we’re to believe Lee is willing to fight him, which wouldn’t be surprising given their beef that arose on live TV after Lee’s controversial submission win over Michael Chiesa this June, where ‘El Cucuy’ was serving as a live television analyst on FOX Sports 1. The quickly surging Lee has won five in a row and appears to be on the cusp of true title contention, speculation that will become fact if he faces and defeats Ferguson this fall.

There’s no word if an interim title will be on the line as current champ Conor McGregor faces Floyd Mayweather in his pro boxing bout in less than two weeks, but with rumors surfacing “The Notorious” may still fight in the octagon in 2017, that seems unlikely at this point.

Matt Brown Eying Key Fight At UFC 216

UFC welterweight veteran Matt Brown has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows as a professional MMA fighter. He has lost five out of his last six Octagon appearances.

His most recent knockout loss came by Donald Cerrone back at UFC 206. Due to the fact that he has struggled as of late, the 36-year-old is unsure of his long-term UFC future.

With all of that said, Brown cannot justify walking away at this point in his life. He is planning on returning to the Octagon this fall.

“I’m not rushing, but I am looking at probably October,” Brown said in a recent interview with BJ Penn Radio. “Well if I can get an opponent. I have been talking to Sean Shelby, and we are just looking for an opponent. You know half of getting a fight is finding someone to fight. It looks like that is probably going to be the timetable, but I don’t know if it is going to work out with opponents and everything. I should hear something back very soon actually.

“We talked about October 7 (UFC 216). Obviously, I can’t announce anything because I don’t have an opponent. But yea, it is supposed to be October 7. I am just waiting for an opponent.”

Brown has not won inside the Octagon since submitting Tim Means back at UFC 189. Prior to that fight, he was on a seven fight winning streak that spanned from 2012 – 2014. He has dropped two consecutive fights by way of knockout.

Brown is living up to his moniker and looking to stay alive at welterweight. He believes that he can get a few wins under his belt then he can fight UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.

“I am ready to fight anybody. You know there are a lot of good matchups out there for me right now,” Brown said. “Obviously I have to get a few wins together here before worrying about fighting someone like (Tyron) Woodley. With that said, I think I matchup good with Woodley. I feel like I’m a lot like Rory MacDonald. He (Rory) showed the blueprint on how to beat Woodley. But yea man I am pretty much ready to fight anybody.”

“I know that Cowboy (Cerrone) was trying to get on the UFC 216 fight card,” Brown continued. “I told Sean (Shelby) that I would gladly take that fight. You know if he really wants on that card I will be there. Other than that, like you said the landscape changes so much with guys getting wins or getting hurt. I really don’t know who is all available to fight.”

There’s no doubt that fight fans would enjoy seeing another bout between Brown and Cerrone as their previous fight was great. However, it’s highly unlikely considering Brown just lost to Cerrone this past December. It appears that Brown could be fighting an up-and-coming contender in his next bout.

The UFC continues to add star power to their upcoming UFC 216 PPV (pay-per-view) event. The promotion has announced the launch of the new women’s flyweight division. It will get rolling later this year after Season 26 of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Before the season wraps up, the promotion has booked a pair of big names that will reportedly move not only up but also down in weight in order to fight in the newest weight division. Strawweight fighter Paige VanZant (7-3) is set to take on bantamweight fighter Jessica Eye (11-6) at the event.

The UFC has yet to officially announce the bout. Damon Martin was the first to report the news. Multiple news outlets have since picked up the news of the bout. Both fighters are in need of a win. Eye is currently riding a four fight losing streak with her latest defeat coming from Bethe Correia by split decision at UFC 206 last September. On the flip side, VanZant is 2-2 in her last four bouts with a loss in her latest bout to Michelle Waterson by first-round submission last December.

UFC 216 is set to take place on October 7th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The preliminary card will air on the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, as well as FOX Sports 1. The main card will be broadcasted on PPV. The main event for the upcoming show has yet to be officially announced. Here is the updated lineup:

At this past weekend’s (July 29, 2017) UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, Donald Cerrone took on former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in a fight that turned out to be an entertaining three round slug fest. Cerrone, however, came up short, suffering a decision loss.

The former lightweight title challenger had also reportedly suffered an eye injury during the fight, which could’ve potentially put him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. It appears as if he has already gotten that issue taken care of, however, and Cerrone recently said that he’s ‘rallying’ for a fight at October’s UFC 216:

“I got my eye cleared up. I had a six-month (medical) suspension, so that’s another reason why I’m here,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie while in Las Vegas. “I went and took my eye – I got it cleared, and I’m good to go – 20/5 vision. You’d think I could see the punches coming.”

“I was just at the office rallying for Oct. 7 (UFC 216),” he added. “So we’ll see. I didn’t get knocked out this time, so I was like, ‘I’m OK.’

Given how active he is, it isn’t surprising to see Cerrone looking for a quick turnaround, but he also said that he’s expecting the UFC to book him for UFC 217, which will take place at Madison Square Garden in November:

“I think they’re going to hold me off and put me on Madison Square Garden (UFC 217, set for Nov. 4)” Cerrone said. “I have a silly hunch. But who cares? I like to fight. So bring that (expletive) on.”

In regards to his fight against the “Ruthless” one, many had wished it was five rounds in the aftermath of UFC 214, and Cerrone agrees:

“I wish we had two more rounds, man,” Cerrone said. “God, I had a good time. I really did. I knew that fight was going to be that exact thing: meeting in the middle and (expletive) just fighting. The judges – whatever. I don’t have any control over that. I can’t say ‘(Expletive) them,’” he added.

“I guess I should have fought harder, right? They always say, ‘Don’t leave it to the judges.’ So that’s that. Like I said, I wish I had two more rounds. But I legitimately have a sickness, and that was fun to me. Like fun, fun.”

Who would you like to see Cerrone fight next?
