UFC Rankings Update: Yair Rodriguez Removed From Featherweight

The UFC released some shocking info last week when news arrived that formerly hyped featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez had been released from the promotion.

The story was that the flashy ‘Pantera,’ once viewed as one of the promotion’s brightest rising stars, refused to fight Zabit Magomedsharipov and Ricardo Lamas after word came that he would be facing the former at August 4’s expanding UFC 227 pay-per-view from Los Angeles, Calif.

UFC President Dana White wasted little time in releasing the skilled but absent Rodriguez as he focused on the once-hyped talent’s lengthy layoff and refusal to fight:

“The guy’s off a year, rejects a fight with Lamas and then doesn’t want to fight a guy below him in the rankings?” White said. “He can go somewhere else. We have no use for him. He calls that fight fake news. This is real news.”

While it was thought that the pending release was perhaps a tactic to get Rodriguez to accept the fight, apparently it’s very real as Rodriguez has been removed from his No. 11 spot on the UFC rankings in the latest update. His removal allowed Mirsad Bektic and Magomedsharipov to rise up a spot each and boosted Myles Jury by two spots.

In other prominent rankings movement, surging middleweight Kelvin Gastelum moved up a spot to No. 4 for his close split decision win over Ronaldo Souza at last weekend’s UFC 224 from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dropping ‘Jacare’ three spots in the process.

Mackenzie Dern also made her debut on the women’s strawweight rankings despite missing weight for the division by an egregious seven pounds for her UFC 224 match-up with Amanda Bobby Cooper, which she eventually won by first-round submission.

While it’s definitely an accomplishment for Dern to debut on the rankings after two UFC bouts, the promotion has reportedly already said she will be forced to move up to women’s flyweight for her next bout, making her presence on the strawweight ranks a bit pointless until she proves she can make weight.

Understandably, many fighters have been very critical over Mackenzie Dern clocking in at 7.4 the strawweight limit for her UFC 224 fight against Amanda Cooper. But now, the champ herself has weighed in on the scale fail. And she is not impressed.

Tuesday on the UFC Unfiltered podcast, strawweight champion Rose Namajunas joined the show along with fiancé and trainer Pat Barry, and even the always humble and courteous champion could not restrain herself from voicing her disapproval for the Dern’s weigh-in catastrophe:

“That right hand she threw looked like it was a big ol’ girl throwing that punch.” Rose continues, “That was a heavy, heavy punch, and that was from a heavy girl. And not to say that that’s not her punch and that’s not a dangerous punch, but maybe that would’ve been a little bit different had she made weight or at least gave an effort to make weight.”

There has been enough criticism for Dern’s weight fail at UFC 224. Now, Rose argues, it’s time to talk consequences:

“I don’t know what kind of consequences…but I hope that it’s something that’s like…come on, girl.” Rose paused, apparently still struggling to find the words before repeating in a flabbergasted tone, “Come on, girl.

“I mean you didn’t even have abs, girl, like, come on.”

After getting her nausea out of her system, Rose returned to her usual benign demeanor and paid the hot prospect some complimentary words and is even excited at the possibility of facing Dern down the road:

“I thought, other than the weight issue, I thought she looked great. I always wanted to test my jiu-jitsu against…that would be awesome. She’s just got to get her shit together, and maybe that might be down the road.”

Raquel Pennington’s corner took a verbal lashing after not stopping her UFC 224 title fight against champion Amanda Nunes.

“Rocky” told her coaches that she was “done” in between the fourth and fifth round after apparently suffering a badly broken nose due to a torrent of knees from Nunes in addition to a knee injury, yet her coach Jason Kutz urged her to fight on. In the days since Nunes has blasted the decision to let her get finished while Pennington’s girlfriend Tecia Torres and Pennington herself have come to Kutz’s side.

Now, Kutz finally told his side of the story on why he didn’t throw in the towel before the last round during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour this week:

“What I’m going to say is, the way she said it, and more importantly, the look in her eye — that’s what I don’t think people understand. When you spend four hours a day doing what she does and doing what we do, I know her. I can read her face like a book. And I know that had she stopped [the fight] right then and there, and I’ve talked to her about this afterward — like, ‘Hey, in 10 years when you look back at this, I think you’d be kicking yourself in the pants had you not gone out there.’

“I knew it was going to take an extraordinary effort, because she had to stop Amanda. She had to do something huge, right? Something extra ordinary. And if I didn’t think that Raquel could do something extraordinary, then hey, we would’ve went the other way with it. And the thing is, like I said, the mentality of her at that moment, I just felt if she could somehow flip it around and go out there and do something extraordinary, we got a chance. And you know what? She trained her ass off for a long time to get this title shot, and in the fifth round of the title fight, I know her leg hurts, but hey, I thought that she could go out there and go.”

After staying quiet for a day, Pennington adamantly defended Kutz, a former Division-I wrestling coach at two universities, in the aftermath of her TKO loss to Nunes. The stakes were clearly higher than a normal fight with the title on the line, which obviously played a role in Kutz’s decision to convince his fighter to go for one more round.

While there was little chance she would pull out a Hail Mary win due to the fact she had been thoroughly dominated by ‘The Lioness’ throughout the first four rounds, Pennington is ultimately a fighter and was glad her coach motivated her to go out on her shield.
