Former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos will be fighting Colby Covington for the interim welterweight belt in Chicago and not in Brazil as originally thought.

Covington has made a name for himself with his sophomoric brand of trash talking, targeting Brazil and Brazilians yet without the subtle charm of Chael Sonnen. Fighters from the country lashed out at Covington, and it became abundantly clear that Covington wouldn’t be welcome in Brazil anytime soon:

“I’m the King of Brazil. I owe it to the fans of Brazil to go back there and put on a show for them. Brazil wasn’t ready for me, so Dana had to put it in the U.S.”

Covington will indeed instead fight Dos Anjos in Chicago at UFC 225, where the two will battle it out for the interim welterweight title as Tyron Woodley sits out indefinitely with an injury.

UFC President Dana White explains the necessity of creating an interim title in Woodley’s absence:

“He’s injured. He’s been out for awhile. We’ve been trying to get him to fight. He’s not taking any fights. He sent us a doctor’s note from the best shoulder specialist in the country, who said he’s out til August. We’re not going to be in a position where we jam up a division, so we’re going to do the fight.”

The bout was initially booked for UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro, but was moved around Thursday. UFC 225 goes down on June 9th.

UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has revealed the reason he would not fight #1 contender Yoel Romero at UFC 225.

Whittaker won the interim title when he beat Romero back at UFC 213 in July. Then the promotion made him the champion after Georges St-Pierre vacated the strap due to a medical condition in December after beating Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to win it.

As a result of Whittaker dealing with a staph infection in his stomach and did not receive proper treatment, he was forced to withdraw from his first title defense against Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.

This led to the promotion booking an interim title bout between top contenders Rockhold and Romero.

With Romero picking up the win over Rockhold, he is the clear #1 contender for the title. If you recall, that fight almost didn’t happen due to Romero missing weight.

So let’s dive into why Romero missed weight for the main event fight. He went on record by telling the media that he had a diet plan laid out for his originally scheduled fight, which would’ve been at UFC on FOX 28 in two weeks later.

Once he decided that he would accept this fight with Rockhold, he claims that he had to change things and it “messed up a little bit for the weight cut.”

It’s a deal breaker if Romero misses weight for this fight, according to Whittaker who recently explained why that would be the case during a recent interview with Submission Radio (transcript courtesy of MMA Mania)

“I don’t understand anyone who takes fights when their opponent doesn’t make weight. It’s like, if you rock up at 87 kilos, which is what Romero did – It was like 86 kilos or something like that – then why don’t I rock up at 95 (kgs)? What’s the difference?

We’re both not making weight, we’re both not professional enough to do it, you know? And the weight cut is directly influential to the fight itself. I think not making weight is the most unprofessional thing you can do.

It’s as bad as just not showing up for the fight itself. So, if you don’t make weight, I’m not fighting you. I’ll give the shot to someone else who can make the weight, who can do their freaking job.”

According to a report from MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani, a heavyweight bout between former champion Andrei Arlovski and rising contender Tai Tuivasa is close to being finalized for June 9, 2018’s UFC 225, which is set to take place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

Between January 2016 and June 2017, Arlovski looked to be nearing the end of the road, as he had lost five-straight fights with all five of them ending via stoppage. More recently, however, the 39-year-old has proved to have some gas left in the tank, as he’s currently riding a two-fight winning streak that includes victories over Junior Albini and Stefan Struve.

The 24-year-old Tuivasa, meanwhile, holds a professional mixed martial arts record of 7-0. Since entering the UFC this past November, he’s won back-to-back fights, stopping Rashad Coulter with a flying knee and finishing Cyril Asker with punches.

UFC 225 is currently set to be headlined by a middleweight title fight between champion Robert Whittaker and top contender Yoel Romero. The two met for a first time last July at UFC 213 where Whittaker scored a unanimous decision victory.
