Darren Till is finally moving up to middleweight.
The Englishman has received a lot of criticism for fighting at 170 pounds. Standing six-feet-tall and sporting a wide frame, Till holds a big size advantage over most of his opponents.
Till missed weight back in May when he fought Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. Till weighed in at 174 pounds and went on to defeat Thompson via controversial split decision at MAy’s UFC Liverpool. The victory earned him a shot at the UFC welterweight title.
Tyron Woodley handed Till the first loss of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career at UFC 228 early last month via second-round submission. Now, writing a blog post for Paddy Power, Till revealed he will be moving up to middleweight:
“I’m a big dude for welterweight to be honest, so that’s probably going to be my last fight at that weight. Welterweight isn’t fully gone for me, but I’m going to be happy going up to middleweight now and I’ll be strong at that weight not having to cut as much weight.
“It’s not that I can’t make the weight. I’m just a big lad so I just have to be on such a strict, regimented diet and being honest, I don’t like doing it. People might say ‘he’s not disciplined enough’, but because I have to cut so much weight I can only eat the bare minimum of food and that’s not how I want to be training.”
Till’s decision is definitely a step in the right direction. Given his size, it’s arguable that the Englishman could fight as high as 205 pounds.
After a video made the rounds on social media showing Till pushing through a brutal weight cut, many agreed the best move would be for him to jump up.
It will be interesting to see how he fares against the elite competition 185 pounds has to offer.

Some obviously come from wrestling, having spent their lives learning to take opponents down and defend their takedowns.
The collegiate wrestler turned MMA fighter usually gets some grief. Fans typically believe that the wrestler depends largely on the lay and pray and ground and pound methods to win fights. While this sentiment may have held true in the early days of MMA, it’s not the case anymore.
In today’s MMA, athletes transitioning from collegiate wrestling have an abundance of resources. This has led to more wrestlers developing scary knockout power.
We took a look at 10 wrestlers who became knockout artists in MMA. The list starts here:
Few college wrestlers have enjoyed the success in MMA as UFC welterweight champion Woodley.
Woodley burst on the fight scene in 2009. He quickly developed a reputation as a finisher and made his Strikeforce debut in just his third pro fight.
As of late, the reigning welterweight champion has come under some criticism for his lack of urgency when closing out some of his more recent title defenses.
The “Chosen One” answered the doubters at UFC 228 when he smashed Darren Till with a thunderous right hand and followed it up with a submission victory.

UFC 228’s estimated PPV buyrate has been revealed, and it’s a bit of doom and gloom for the Las Vegas-based promotion.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the early numbers show may not have cleared even 150,000 buys. “The 9/8 PPV numbers were well below expectations with Woodley vs. Till on top. They are so bad that we haven’t gotten an estimate past an early number of 130,000 that was going around,” Meltzer wrote.
Tyron Woodley vs. Darren Till in a welterweight title fight headlined this show, which saw Woodley successfully retain his title. Jéssica Andrade vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz in a women’s strawweight bout served as the co-main event. Nicco Montaño vs. Valentina Shevchenko in a women’s flyweight title fight was supposed to be the co-main event but that fight got nixed after Montaño was hospitalized.
This wasn’t a stacked card by any means nor did it have some big name fighters featured. This event was projected to do decently after the surprise of the previous pay-per-view event, UFC 227, doing 300,000 buys the month before.
Although Woodley is known for his trash talk and one of the best welterweights in the world, he’s not a huge draw despite the fact that he creates headlines by the things he says and top fighters he calls out in interviews. Also, Till, who is still new to the UFC fan base as he’s only had a handful of fights under the promotion banner, had not headlined a PPV event before this fight.

UFC 226: 380,000
UFC 225: 250,000
The promotion returns to pay-per-view with its UFC 229 show on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor for the UFC lightweight title will headline the show while Tony Ferguson vs. Anthony Pettis in a lightweight bout will co-headline. UFC President Dana White has previously stated that this event is trending for over 2 million buys.
