Tyron Woodley explains why he doesn’t think that former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington should get the next crack at the strap. It’s well known that Covington was supposed to be the next in line for Woodley and the title but Covington underwent surgery to correct a nasal issue and turned down the fight. Thus, the UFC gave the title shot to rising prospect Darren Till.

As seen in the main event of the UFC 228 pay-per-view event on Saturday, September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center, Woodley was able to score a second round submission victory over Till to retain his title.

Following the fight, Covington called out Woodley for a fight with the welterweight title on the line. However, Woodley made it known that he’s not thrilled to fight Covington in his next title defense. But he also didn’t say Covington was out of the question.

Now, Woodley is looking for a quick turnaround and noted that UFC 230 is a potential return date for him as the UFC doesn’t have a main event for that show.

“I’m not saying I am gonna fight him, because I don’t feel like he deserves my platform right now,” Woodley said. “He had his chance to be here. He bitched out, if you want to be honest and frank. He talked all this crap and when he got in the hot seat, the second he won that belt. I said, ‘Let’s come get this smoke.’ He got quiet. Instagram accounts got taken down for a brief moment and he didn’t say nothing.

“I think it’s an embarrassment to the sport and if that’s the next person that’s gotta get the work, you don’t have to do much to get me up for that fight. We’ll see.”

“The more I fight, the better I get,” Woodley said (H/T to MMAFighting). “And the most comfortable I get, the more confident I get. So I want to stay as active as possible. If November is a date they’re looking for a main event, I think they got their guy.”

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

In an impactful match for the future of the UFC 170-pound division, Tyron Woodley met young challenger Darren Till in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The hulking Till was thought to be the toughest challenge to Woodley’s two-year stint atop the throne. Woodley defended his title three times against Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia but had been out of action for almost 14 months after having surgery for a torn labrum following his latest victory at UFC 214.

“The Chosen One” proved all his doubters wrong quite emphatically, however, controlling the first round before dropping Till with a massive counter right in the second.

The strike opened the floodgates for a downpour of huge ground damage ending in a D’arce choke submission win for Woodley. He dominated the Liverpudlian by a shocking margin, out-landing Till in significant strikes by a shocking 46 to 0 margin and 58 to 0 in overall strikes. What a great moment to see after a hard-fought battle.

Darren Till shared a touching moment with Tyron Woodley’s mother backstage after UFC 228.

Till and Woodley headlined the pay-per-view (PPV) from Dallas, Texas, which was finished in the second round after “The Chosen One” locked in a D’arce choke.

After the fight, the Englishman ran into his opponent’s mother. They embraced and shared some kind words with one another before continuing on. Check out the video here:

Woodley and Till showed a lot of sportsmanship after the bout as well. They shook hands after the fight inside the Octagon and exchanged comments. They also saw each other backstage, and Woodley offered the youngster some words of encouragement.

The 25-year-old is still young in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He is an extremely talented fighter and has already shown he can hang with the best the division has to offer.

Till will likely find himself fighting for a title again in the future, but it’s amazing that he skyrocketed to the opportunity as fast as he did. As for Woodley, he’ll likely be moving on to a more personal rivalry in the coming months.

Colby Covington is expected to be Woodley’s next challenger for the welterweight title, and that build-up will be very interesting, to say the least.

In news that should surprise no one, former interim UFC welterweight champion Colby Covington has called out Tyron Woodley in the hours following last night’s UFC 228 from Dallas.

There, welterweight champion Tyron Woodley submitted rising star Darren Till with a dominant, impressive showing in the main event, a fight Covington should have probably had. “Chaos” won the interim belt by defeating Rafael dos Anjos in the co-main event of June’s UFC 225 and was thought to be headed for his inevitable rivalry with Woodley.

Covington couldn’t fight at UFC 228 due to sinus surgery, however, so the fight went to Till. When Woodley sent him back down the ranks, Covington was predictably there to call for the fight he missed for a bigger stage later this year:

Woodley is none too high on granting Covington a title shot because he claims the outspoken wrestler had the fight but ‘bitched out.’

He may have that stance alongside many other fans, yet the bout still seems like the most entertaining match-up to make at 170 pounds.

It’s safe to assume “Chaos” knows it, too, so don’t be surprised to see this rivalry get fired up again soon.

Reigning UFC welterweight ruler Tyron Woodley put together by far his most complete title defense when he submitted formerly rising contender Darren Till in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 8, 2018) UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Woodley showed the trademark athleticism and speed on his feet that earned him the title, and he mixed that with a smothering wrestling attack early coupled with a fight-sealing submission skillset later in the fight. “The Chosen One” opened up on the fight in an interview on the FOX Sports 1-aired post-fight show, noting that he had to use some new tools to set up his go-to right hand due to the labrum injury that had kept him out for the prior 14 months.

He revealed he was more than prepared for the huge straight right that spelled the beginning of the end for the Liverpudlian rising star:

“You know, I didn’t have much of a choice. Obviously, I had a right labrum tear. So it forced me to utilize new tools – left hooks, jabs, leg kicks, high kicks. So when I ‘m bringing in those new tools and those new skills, it disguised my right had more. I was really just punching, weaving with him, so if you punch against Darren Till as he’s backing up, he steps back and counters really well.

“So I knew that my opportunity was going to be punches in bunches or I have to punch with him. So as you saw when I dropped him, he was throwing a jab, I weaved on the outside and threw a right hand down the middle, something we drilled a million, million times.”

Woodley controlled the action in the first round with his wrestling game, yet it wasn’t nearly as successful as his striking was in the second. The champion was never in trouble, but his takedown attempts were unsuccessful and lead to some brief clinch periods. When they did, referee Dan Miragliotta restarted the action seemingly far earlier than one would expect.

Woodley said he didn’t care about that when he was asked, however. He knows fans want to see striking. “The Chosen One” also wasn’t looking to use all his energy on his much taller opponent. Overall the champ was ready for however long it took to win the pivotal 170-pound match:

“Not really. Some people want to see more of a striking attack. He’s a tall guy, I didn’t wanna waste a lot of energy. I had a nice body lock on him so I was trying to hook his ankle and get him off balance so maybe I can land a knee to the body and get him to hunch him over. But he wasn’t really giving it up.

“He actually pulled himself to the octagon because he felt more comfortable having the octagon and himself defending me. So I was just relaxed, and I was just, you know, it might take one round, it might take two, it might take five, but I was gonna get the job done.”
