Derrick Lewis claims he will be at 100 percent for November’s UFC 230, and he warns heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier to take him seriously.

Lewis is fresh off a remarkable come-from-behind knockout victory over Alexander Volkov at UFC 229. That fight was not even two weeks ago.

Regardless, “The Black Beast” will step right into the main event of UFC 230 at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. And although Lewis may still have some swelling on his face from the war with Volkov, he promises to be in the best shape of his life.

Lewis’ Health

“I will be 100 percent going into this fight,” Lewis today said at a UFC 230 media event in Las Vegas via MMAjunkie. “I went to the doctor and got cleared. Everything checked out pretty good. They basically said I was good to fight.”

Lewis very well may be in peak physical condition come November 3, but can “DC” show up in the same shape?

Cormier has been dealing with a lingering hand injury that he suffered back at UFC 226 when he defeated Stipe Miocic. The performance earned “DC” the heavyweight title but may have caused some lasting damage.

Lewis thinks “DC” may be taking him lightly or underestimating him. For that, “The Black Beast” has a stern warning for the champ-champ.

“The Black Beast’s” Warning

“I believe he’s thinking this is going to be an easy fight for himself,” Lewis said. “Go ahead and think that. It’s crazy I even made it this far without he training I put in before each and every fight. I’m serious, I don’t stay in the gym each day like my opponents. I spend probably 30 minutes (training), five minutes sitting and five minutes on my phone posting memes and stuff.

“I go into every fight with a bad back and overweight and a damn-near diabetic. It doesn’t matter to me that he’s coming into a fight with just a bad hand. That’s good for him, then.”

The 33-year-old Lewis is a most unlikely title challenger. Don’t His record speaks for itself, as winning nine of 10 fights in the heavyweight division is unheard of. However, it is Lewis’ personality that has fast-tracked his title hopes.

But even Lewis agrees Miocic should’ve been next in line for a title shot.

“It’s just one (opportunity) that I can’t pass up because I know there’s a lot of guys in this division that probably deserve a shot more than I’m getting,” Lewis said. “I probably don’t deserve a shot more than Stipe, should have probably got the shot. But, ain’t no telling when the next time I’m going to get this opportunity, so I had to jump on it anyway.”

In the past, Lewis has been open about his lackluster performances, admitting he slacked in preparation for some of his past fights. Lewis has also stated he needed more cardio training before a title shot, but a shot at Cormier was too good to pass up.

But according to “The Black Beast” he is pushing himself to new limits ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

An Honest Assessment

“As long as I’m 100 percent, I’m in good shape. I don’t care what he’s going to do or what he thinks he can do,” Lewis said. “I’m just going to worry about what I can do. … If you don’t take me serious, it’s a mistake. I want him to take me serious, I don’t want no excuses or nothing like that. I can’t wait for that fight.”

UFC 226 Didn’t Make Daniel Cormier Or Stipe Miocic Much Money

Despite making history at the event, Daniel Cormier didn’t make much money from his UFC 226 fight with Stipe Miocic.

Daniel Cormier made history at UFC 226 this past summer.

“DC” became the UFC’s second-ever dual weight champion by defeating Stipe Miocic in the show’s main event. Cormier already held the light heavyweight title. He knocked out Miocic to capture the heavyweight belt as well. He now prepares to defend the heavyweight title at UFC 230 next month (Sat. November 3, 2018).

Despite making history at UFC 226, it turns out the monetary value of the feat didn’t quite match the impact it’ll have on his legacy. As he prepares to defend his title against Derrick Lewis at UFC 230 next month, Cormier spoke to MMA Weekly to promote the fight.

The topic of a rematch with Miocic was discussed due to the former champ’s resumé. Miocic has been frustrated recently because he hasn’t received an immediate title rematch despite being the most successful heavyweight champion in history.

Cormier said he’s not afraid to fight Miocic, but the financial appeal simply isn’t there considering the revenue he made from UFC 226:

“I’m not trying to say I’m afraid of Stipe. I swear I’m not afraid of Stipe Miocic. Why would I be?” Cormier said. “It just did not make sense right now. I don’t mind fighting him again. It’s not like it was the hardest fight.

“I do appreciate that he’s being vocal because sh*t man, maybe if he had done that in the beginning, maybe we would have made some money. The pay-per-view didn’t do that well because we did not make money. Obviously, issues sell. Maybe he’s trying to stir the pot a little bit to get some interest in our fight.”

Instead, Cormier faces Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230. There he will make his first career heavyweight title defense from Madison Square Garden.

The show goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from New York City on November 3, 2018.

Jorge Masvidal Launched Major Campaign To Fight Nate Diaz

Jorge Masvidal apparently wanted to replace Dustin Poirier against Nate Diaz at UFC 230 in November.

Nate Diaz’s Octagon return is on hold.

Initially, it was announced that the fan-favorite would be making his return to the Octagon at UFC 230. Diaz was to fight Dustin Poirier in the pay-per-view’s (PPV) co-main event. There was a big push from fans to try and implement a 165-pound title to boost it to the headliner.

However, UFC President Dana White shot that idea down immediately. Once the UFC figured out its issues with the UFC 230 main event, announcing Daniel Cormier vs. Derrick Lewis for the heavyweight title, UFC 230 took another hit.

It was announced Poirier suffered a hip injury and would be forced off the card. Diaz, reluctant to take a replacement opponent, opted to pull from the event as well. Had he decided to fight, however, he would’ve had plenty of willing dance partners to step in.

One of those being 170-pound fighter Jorge Masvidal. During an interview on BJPenn.com Radio, “Gamebred” revealed that he really wanted to fight Diaz at Madison Square Garden (via MMA Mania):

“I really wanted that fight,” Masvidal said. “I think I would’ve matched up very well, I would’ve put the money on me. I’ve got a lot of respect for Nate and Nick.

“Mainly because of their will. They don’t have the biggest skill set in the game but they probably got some of the most heart in the game.”

Masvidal hasn’t fought in almost a year. His last outing was a unanimous decision loss to Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. The 33-year-old former street fighter is ready to get back into the Octagon now, however, and he’s looking for a ranked opponent.
