It’s time Khabib Nurmagomedov updates his weight status heading into Saturday’s (Oct. 6, 2018) UFC 229 from Las Vegas.
The lightweight champion’s weight has been a hot topic before the biggest fight of his career. It’s for good reason. Nurmagomedov was missed weight before. His scheduled UFC 209 interim title bout with Tony Ferguson was called off as a result.
Uncertainty brews and McGregor’s team is even concerned about the Dagestani combatant being on point at weigh-ins. It would be an extremely costly weight miss. The undefeated Nurmagomedov is most likely headed for his biggest payday. More importantly, he could finally become a mainstream star with a victory. He won’t make McGregor’s record-breaking MMA payday, but it will certainly be Khabib’s most lucrative purse.
The fight has to happen first. The MMA world is on pins and needles hoping that their biggest-ever match goes off without a hitch in five days’ time. Khabib has certainly dealt with a ton of serious injuries in recent years.
‘The Eagle’ said on this week’s “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show” that he was thankful to be in good shape. He clarified that his weight was good:
“Now I have belt, I am undisputed, undefeated. Now, this is my third fight in my last nine months. It’s like we part of the pay-per-view, everything And like five days before the fight, this is crazy.
“Now we’re here, my weight is good, my shape is good. I’m 30 years old, I’m still hungry, I’m still young for this sport. This is crazy.”
The champ claimed he was already at 166 pounds and would make weight “no problem” for the match.
Beyond that, Khabib obviously has a long history with McGregor.
More Than Personal
The Irish former champion was arrested for his infamous bus attack this April. He threw a metal dolly through a bus containing Nurmagomedov prior to UFC 223.
Because of the scene, Helwani asked Khabib if the fight was more than just a title defense. “The Eagle” admitted that indeed it was. Nurmagomedov claimed he was chomping at the bit to make McGregor pay:
“Yeah, I agree. This is a little bit more than defending my title, more than fight for the title. You know this more than like, fight. It’s a little bit personal for, of course, and you know, I wanna make this guy pay, you know? This guy gonna pay about everything, what he say, what he did.
“In like five days, I’m gonna be very happy. We here now, and we very close.”
But he stopped short at sounding cocky before the biggest fight of his life. The always-humble Khabib acknowledged that McGregor had lethal timing and striking skills he could not underestimate:
“I’m not underestimating this guy, I know this guy have good timing, good boxing.”
After weeks of speculation, the Madison Square Garden pay-per-view (PPV) has reportedly landed a headliner. Per ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, a UFC women’s flyweight title bout will headline the card. Valentina Shevchenko will take on Sijara Eubanks:
BREAKING: Valentina Shevchenko vs. Sijara Eubanks for the vacant flyweight tile will headline UFC 230 on Nov. 3 in Madison Square Garden, per multiple sources.
The action goes down from Madison Square Garden on November 3rd in New York City. Shevchenko was initially scheduled to fight for the 125-pound strap in Dallas last month. Unfortunately, opponent and then-champion Nicco Montano was hospitalized due to a bad weight cut. As a result, the fight was called off and Montano was stripped of her title.
UFC President Dana White announced Shevchenko would get the opportunity to fight for the vacant belt soon. It was initially speculated that Shevchenko could fight former 115-pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the honors. However, it appears the UFC had other plans.
“Bullet” has won three of her past four fights inside the Octagon. Her sole loss was a bantamweight title fight against Amanda Nunes. Nunes defeated Shevchenko via controversial split decision to retain her title. Shevchenko now has her eyes set on being the UFC’s 125-pound champion.
Eubanks has only fought once before in the UFC. She holds a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record of 3-2. Eubanks’ last Octagon appearance resulted in a unanimous decision win over Lauren Murphy.
It had initially been speculated that Jon Jones could main event the card. His United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension will be up later this month on October 28th. This frees him up to make his highly-anticipated Octagon return in his home state. Unfortunately, it looks like that won’t be happening.

Nate Diaz addresses his status at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event where he’s slated to fight Dustin Poirier in a lightweight bout. It’s been well documented that there has been a lot of drama with making this fight happen.
Late last month, Diaz and Poirier claimed on social media that they will be fighting for a newly created 165-pound title at UFC 230. However, that’s not the case as Dana White has since come out by stating that’s not the case.
Theory
With all of this drama, there has been some doubt that Diaz will fight at the show. Fear not though fight fans, Diaz made his intentions known in a recent interview. The younger Diaz brother has publicly stated that he’s training for the fight and plans to be there.
“They don’t want Dustin Poirier to fight at (165 pounds). I’m like, ‘What the (expletive)?’” Diaz said (H/T to MMAJunkie). “… Whoever wants it, come get it. If you guys are out there, spit it the (expletive) out. Let’s get a fight.”
The UFC President has been telling fans for several weeks now that they are working on a main event for the show but has yet to announce it. Diaz believes that they have no one else to fill this role.
“They trying to have me headline for Madison Square Garden. They don’t got nobody else, but they don’t want Dustin to fight. So I’m down down for whatever they want. All comers, bring it the (expletive) on.”
Nate Diaz Addresses
Diaz claimed that he heard that the UFC was considering this new weight class. He also noted that he’s the one asking for it and not the UFC. Thus, he’s not excited for the fight but he’s stuck in it.
“The ball’s in their court,” Diaz said. “I’m training to fight, though. I’m not excited at all. I’m stuck in this (expletive). That’s what it is.”
