Ronaldo Souza Returns Against Former WSOF Champion At UFC 230

Ronaldo Souza has his next fight booked.

Ronaldo Souza is slated to make his return soon to the Octagon under the UFC banner according to a recent report.

This comes off the fact that Ariel Helwani of ESPN.com is reporting that the Las Vegas-based promotion is working on the first fight for their upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event in November, which historically has been one of the bigger events of the year for the promotion.

Their first event at the arena saw Conor McGregor finish Eddie Alvarez to win the lightweight title at UFC 205 PPV in 2016 while last year, UFC 217 featured the return of former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre as he made the walk back to the Octagon where he beat Michael Bisping to win the middleweight strap.

Moving along to the report, the promotion is working on an intriguing middleweight fight between Souza and former World Series Of Fighting middleweight and light heavyweight champion David Branch as the two fighters have verbally agreed to fight each other at UFC 230.

Souza (25-6, 1 NC), who is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion, is coming off a split decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum in May and is looking to get back to his winning ways after going 2-2 in his last four fights.

Typically, the older a fighter gets then the closer he gets to end of his career but in Souza’s position, that’s not the case and at 38-years-old, he’s near the top of the middleweight division right now and could be considered a title contender as Souza had been on the cusp of a UFC title shot but suffered a TKO loss to current middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in his bout last April.

On the flip side, Branch (22-4) most recently knocked out Thiago Santos in the first round in April after suffering a submission loss to former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold last September.

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City with the main card airing on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

As of this writing, no other bouts have been confirmed for this upcoming show, but the promotion is expected to announce fights in the coming weeks.

Frankie Edgar is looking to make his return to the Octagon.

It’s been a wild year for the former UFC lightweight champion to say the least as he was supposed to challenge Max Holloway for the UFC featherweight title at UFC 222 but had to put out due to injury that led to Holloway fighting Jose Aldo in a rematch, which saw Holloway successfully retain his title with a grisly third-round TKO.

If you recall, this bout was originally scheduled for the UFC 218 pay-per-view event, but Edgar was forced to withdraw from the fight after suffering a broken orbital bone in training.

Moving along, by looking back at the co-main event of UFC 222 event that went down March 3, 2018, on pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Brian Ortega scored a big victory over the former UFC lightweight champion. Edgar was last seen in the Octagon when he scored a unanimous decision win over Cub Swanson back in April at the UFC Fight Night: Barboza vs. Lee event.

The former champ recently conducted an interview with TMZ Sports (transcript courtesy of MMA News) where he revealed his target date for his UFC return, which is at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

“For me, I don’t know. I’m not gonna wait around for a title shot or anything. I’m gonna let my shoulder heal up properly and get back training and see what happens. If there’s an opportunity, for sure I’m gonna jump on it. If not, I’m gonna get in there. I don’t know, ‘The Garden’s’ coming back in November so that might make sense for me.”

The UFC 230 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

There is one rising contender who has called out Chris Weidman for an upcoming fight.

That contender is Paulo Costa, who is coming off a big win over Uriah Hall on the preliminary portion of the UFC 226 pay-per-view event this past weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.

As a result of this fight, it marked his fourth straight fight in the UFC with all of those wins coming by knockout or TKO. He has never been past the second round while under the UFC banner.

There were man fight fans that believed Costa would fight Israel Adesanya, who is fresh off a unanimous-decision win over vet Brad Tavares in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale the night prior to UFC 226. However, Costa made it clear that he didn’t know who Adesanya is.

“I don’t know who (he is),” Costa (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) told MMAjunkie after his win over Hall (13-9 MMA, 6-7 UFC). “I think when he comes to (the) top 10 or top five … I can think about him.”

Instead, Costa has his sights set on a showdown with former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman at the upcoming UFC 230 pay-per-view event.

“This is just one more victory on my way to the world title,” Costa said, according to the UFC. “Now I want to face a top fighter. I want to fight Chris Weidman. No one in this division can win against me. I’m the most powerful middleweight, and I’m showing that in every fight. Uriah had very good timing and connected the jabs, but I knew he would not be able to handle my power. I’m ready for the next battle.”

“Let’s fight,” Costa said. “Let’s make a great fight in his hometown in November to see who deserves to go to the next title shot in November, after (Kelvin) Gastelum.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, New York City. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.
