Ben Askren suffered his first professional loss at UFC 239 when he was knocked out cold by Jorge Masvidal. There, “Gambred” threw a flying knee that KO’d him in just five seconds.

Following the loss, Duke Roufus has nothing but respect for Masvidal for trying that flying knee.

“Ben’s my friend, you see him hurt like that,” Roufus said to MMA Fighting. “But I gotta take my hat off to Jorge. I know Ben and Jorge don’t get along, I get along well with Jorge, I like Jorge a lot. So fair play, it was a great move, high risk, high reward. It was a very risky move, it paid off for him. I’m that type of guy that believes in ‘fortune favors the bold’ and he was quite bold on that move and it’s going to go down in history as one of the best moves ever in the UFC.

“It could have happened differently. He could have missed and Ben could have been wrestling and on top of Jorge, so we’re all gonna some days hate the fight game. Winning is awesome and losing you want to cry your eyes out, but Ben is a very resilient person. He has a special, special mindset and you saw the way he owns everything. That’s what I really like about Ben. He’s 100 percent transparent, I’ve never worked with someone like him, he’s just a special breed and this is only going to make him better.”

Although it was a brutal knockout, looking back it, Roufus says it caught Askren’s neck, which makes him fighting again in late 2019 possible. But, he assures that he will spend this time with “Funky” to improve his game and be better than ever when he returns.

“He’s one of those guys, he’s gonna be fine,” Roufus said. “If anything, it might put a little bit more chip on his shoulder to work even harder than he’s ever worked before, which is pretty scary.”

Anthony Smith Believes Luke Rockhold Deserved KO Loss

Anthony Smith and Luke Rockhold have had a feud going on for quite some time. As the former middleweight champion announced he would be moving up to light heavyweight he had some choice words for “Lionheart”.

He believed Smith was not a legitimate threat at light heavyweight and his wins were easy. But, when Rockhold made the move to light heavyweight at UFC 239, he was knocked out by Jan Blachowicz.

For Anthony Smith, he wishes he could have been the guy to knockout Luke Rockhold like that. But, he is happy it happened to him anyways as he says he deserved it.

“I would have loved to have been the guy that put Rockhold out like that. But I think it serves him right,” Smith told SiriusXM Fight Nation (H/T to MMA Fighting). “All the trash talk, all the ‘Anthony Smith is a bum. Gustafsson’s gonna roll over him and I’m gonna starch Jan,’ and just the disrespect and just looking right over Jan.

“So it’s unfortunate that his jaw is broken. I don’t want anybody to get hurt but it is nice to, again, see Rockhold get it shoved right in his face. Every single time he’s trashed talked somebody and been too cocky and thought he was too good for everybody and that his sh*t doesn’t stink, he ends up being the one that looks stupid. So I’m glad that the MMA gods made sure that that kept happening. Again, it’s unfortunate. I don’t want anyone to get hurt but I think that all the embarrassment and the finger-pointing and the laughing that’s happening to him right now, I think he absolutely deserves it.”

It seemed likely the two would eventually fight had Rockhold won at UFC 239. Now, it seems unlikely to happen which Smith is mad about. Regardless, “Lionheart” is still a top contender at 205-pounds, while the same can not be said at Rockhold.

Duane Ludwig is no longer the owner of the fastest knockout in UFC history.

Ludwig previously held the honor with his six-second knockout victory over Jonathan Goulet at UFC Fight Night 3 in January 2006. In case you need a refresher, check it out below:

Now, Jorge Masvidal is the owner of the illustrious record, beating out Ludwig’s record by one second. He finished Ben Askren with a flying knee at UFC 239 this past weekend. Speaking to MMA Junkie, Ludwig said he expected his record to be broken with the maneuver:

“It’s how I assumed my record would be beat,” Ludwig said. “Just like Kid Yamamoto when he did the jump knee years ago in four seconds (against Kazuyuki Miyata at K-1 Hero’s 5). I thought if someone was ever to beat that record they would go right out and do a jump-flying knee and end the fight. It finally happened.”

In regards to Masvidal being the one to break the record, Ludwig is glad it came from a fighter with a “worthy” resume like “Gamebred’s,” and is glad it was against a high-level opponent like Askren:

“For it to be Masvidal against such a high-level opponent for the title shot contention and all the stakes on the table, it was good that it was at this level of a fight rather than having it end by someone who hasn’t put in as much time or effort in the game,” Ludwig said. “It’s nice to have it be someone who has a worthy resume like Jorge.

“He did an awesome job. Congrats to him. I was picking him for the win, and it was cool to see that. I like him personally and as a fighter, so it was very nice. Hopefully we’ll see more in the future from Masvidal. I would like to see him get a title shot.”

What do you make of Ludwig’s reaction to Masvidal breaking his record?

Ben Askren shook up the mixed martial arts (MMA) world this past weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019) when he suffered the fastest knockout in UFC history.

Askren got caught shooting in on an immediate takedown by Jorge Masvidal, who connected with a flying knee. “Gamebred rendered “Funky” unconscious in just five seconds for the win. Many have already offered their reactions to the knockout, but now, Askren’s former employer, ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong, has also chimed in.

Sityodtong took to his official Facebook page to comment on the knockout. Here’s what he had to say:

“People have been bombarding me for my thoughts on Ben Askren. To save time, here is what I think:

1) Jorge’s flying knee was not luck. He drilled it. He planned it. He executed it. Jorge Masvidal deserves all of the props for pulling off a super hard, gutsy technique. It takes huge balls to go for it the way Jorge did, especially at the start of a high stakes fight. I am now a huge Gamebred fan.

2) A flying knee is a high risk, low probability technique with KO consequences. It rarely lands clean. However, if you land it clean, it is good night.

3) Despite this spectacular 5 second flying knee KO, it does not mean Jorge is a better fighter than Ben. If they fought another 100 times, Jorge would unlikely score a flying knee KO in 5 seconds ever again.

4) It is genuinely hard to say who is the better fighter. We never got to see their skills in action in any area of the game.

5) If Jorge had dominated Ben for 1-2 rounds and then scored a flying knee KO (or even won via unanimous decision), I would have agreed that Jorge is better than Ben.

It might sound counterintuitive, but I still believe Ben is the single best welterweight on the planet today. This loss reminds me of the time GSP got KO’d by Matt Serra. It was a huge upset, but it did not necessarily mean that Matt Serra was better than GSP. Their rematch emphatically proved this point.

Ben might look like he just got off a couch after eating a plateful of cheeseburgers and donuts, but do not be fooled. Ben is an absolute MONSTER. His wrestling is terrifying. And, his ground intelligence, man strength, and cardio are unparalleled. Above all though, Ben simply does not break. I will not reveal any names, but I have personally seen him destroy the highest level ONE and UFC champions many times in training (in addition to hearing inside stories of many other gym wars in the US). People can argue that training is not a real fight, but Ben has a history and reputation of delivering the same performance in both training and competition.

Don’t count Ben out. He is just getting started.”
