We have an incredible main event this weekend at UFC 243, as UFC interim middleweight champion Israel Adesanya looks to unify his belt with undisputed UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in Melbourne, Australia. This is one of the highest level middleweight matchups of all time, how does this one go down?

Firstly, everyone knows how extensive of a resume “The Last Stylebender” has in kickboxing, and it certainly shows in his fights. He went 32-0 as an amateur, and 75-5-1 as a professional, winning numerous tournaments and championships. He would win his first eleven fights, all via knockout, before joining the UFC. Since coming to the UFC, he’s gone 6-0 inside of just 14 months, which is insane. He’s taken a six-month break since his last fight, which is about the same amount of time that half of those fights happened.

On the other hand, “The Reaper” hasn’t been as active, as he’s fought just once in a little over two years. It’s pretty crazy to think that Whittaker’s only gone 2-0 since July 2017, while Adesanya’s gone 8-0 since the same month of the same year. What does that say about this fight though?

For one, fighters generally are able to add more tools to their skill set when they have periods of time off. However, Adesanya’s last two fights were only two months apart, and he showed a nasty guillotine and triangle choke in the Gastelum fight, both of which were very tight. Adesanya has proven that he can accumulate a more diverse arsenal while in training camp, but can Whittaker do that while rehabbing?

“The Reaper” has always been an impressive talent, as he went 2-0 on “The Ultimate Fighter: Smashes,” before winning the season. He lost twice at welterweight inside the UFC, going 3-2 at 170 pounds, and has gone 8-0 since moving up to middleweight. Something to look back on, Whittaker’s still only 28-years-old, he certainly should still be in the development stage of his career. Though he’s been around a bit longer than Adesanya in the MMA world, he’s two years younger.

Robert Whittaker (20-4) vs. Israel Adesanya (17-0)

With how good of a fight Adesanya had with Gastelum, will this one be similar? Whittaker’s just as good of a striker as Gastelum, and he’s three inches taller. Remember, Gastelum threw, landed, and hurt Adesanya with a head kick, and he’s seven inches shorter than Adesanya. That’s pretty remarkable, especially for someone with a wrestling background, and Whittaker has amazing head kicks himself, as evident in his fights with Brad Tavares, Jacare Souza, Yoel Romero, etc.

The other main factor that this fight could come down to, aside from their frames, is Whittaker’s wrestling. We don’t see too much of it, but when we do, it usually works out for him. Kind of like Jorge Masvidal, who doesn’t take his opponents down often, but when he does, he mixes it up beautifully.

The champion competed for a chance to compete in the Common Wealth Games, which is a pretty massive deal. He got a gold medal in the Australia National Wrestling Championships and was chosen to represent Australia in the Common Wealth Games in Freestyle Wrestling in 2017, but elected not to considering the UFC gave him the ultimatum that if he did, he’d be stripped of his belt. Will that play a factor?

With as good as both of these two are, this is certainly a pick ’em fight, who knows how this one’s going to go? These are absolutely the top two middleweights in the world, and we get to watch them battle for the undisputed UFC middleweight championship this weekend in a New Zealand versus Australia night of fights.

Who are you taking to walk away from UFC 243 as the undisputed UFC middleweight champion? “The Reaper” or “The Last Stylebender”?

Paulo Costa will be in attendance for UFC 243 tomorrow night (Sat. October 5, 2019) to get a first-hand look at Robert Whittaker vs. Israel Adesanya.

The young Brazilian knockout artist will likely challenge the winner for the title next. However, Costa is hoping it’s Adesanya who ends up on top, as he told MMA Junkie at a recent media day, so he can break the Nigerian-born champion’s face.

“I really want to break the face of Adesanya,” Paulo Costa said. “It’s personal with him. I cannot hide this.”

Costa turned a lot of heads with his decision victory over Yoel Romero at UFC 241 earlier this year, solidifying himself as the next title challenger. The undefeated 185-pounder doesn’t believe he needs to do anything to strike fear into the hearts of his adversaries other than being himself.

“I don’t need to do anything to scare these guys – just to be here,” Costa said. “They know I have a great challenge for them, for either of them. They need to fight against me. Probably it will be the next one. Whoever wins will need to fight against the new face of this division, the guy who made Romero go backwards for two or three rounds. I’m here to send my message.”

In regards to who he is picking to win between Whittaker and Adesanya, Costa believes Whittaker will come out on top.

“I think Robert will win,” Costa said. “I can fight against Robert, also. He did a great two wars against Romero. For a lot of people, he lost. I proved I’m a tough guy, and I can beat everybody here in this division.”

What do you think about Costa’s personal issues with Adesanya? Who do you think wins a fight between the pair?

Robert Whittaker is a huge fan of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. The UFC middleweight champion is preparing to unify his 185-pound title with Israel Adesanya in the main event of UFC 243 this weekend.

“Bobby Knuckles” spoke to MMA Fighting at UFC 243 media day this week, and discussed “The Eagle’s” dominance in the lightweight division. Whittaker described Nurmagomedov as “phenomenal,” marveling at the fact that all his opponents know what he’s going to do – and still, nobody can stop him.

“I’m a huge fan of Khabib,” Whittaker said. “I think he’s phenomenal, honestly. I think what he does is crazy. I think his skill set is amazing. I think his cardio and his endurance is ridiculous. I think he’s amazing, I’m a huge fan.

“What I like about him more than anything is, for one, he’s a straight character, I really admire and respect that. And two, everybody knows what he’s going to do—every single person—and no one can stop him. I think that’s phenomenal.”

Nurmagomedov is undefeated in MMA with a record of 28-0. In his last two title defenses, Nurmagomedov has won via submission, taking out both Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier via rear-naked chokes. Now, he’s expected to take on Tony Ferguson, who many believe to be his toughest challenge at 155 pounds. Rumors of a superfight with welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre have also circulated.

What do you think about Whittaker’s fandom of Nurmagomedov?

Robert Whittaker is confident he will defeat Israel Adesanya at UFC 243.

The middleweight champion will fight for the first time since UFC 225 in June of 2018, while Adesanya has fought six times since February of last year. However, “The Reaper” believes “The Last Stylebender” got exposed against Kelvin Gastelum leaving the champ confident.

“If Gastelum can do that much work, I can,” Whittaker told MMA Junkie. “I like to think I’ve got a better skillset than Gastelum. I think I have a better skillset than Izzy. Let’s just see how it goes.”

Although he believes Israel Adesanya got exposed, Robert Whittaker knows he is very talented and it will be a tough fight.

“I think [Adesanya] is super deadly,” Whittaker said. “I think he’s a very talented and great fighter, but hell, I’m still up-and-coming, you know? I’m not going anywhere, anytime soon.

“Honestly, I am more excited for how I come out of this fight, for the work that I’ll put in after this fight to the fighter that I’m going to become from this fight, because every year, I’m getting better. Every year, I have harder fights, and I’ve got a lot of years left in me.”

Regardless of the outcome, all Robert Whittaker wants to do after the fight is spend time with his family.

“Obviously, I’m not looking past Israel,” Whittaker said. “He’s a very hard opponent, and honestly, it’s going to be a very hard fight, and I know this. I’ve prepared for this. But, the only sure thing that I know after this fight is that Monday I’m going to go home and see my kids. That’s it.”

In the end, Robert Whittaker is confident he will beat Israel Adesanya as he doesn’t think he will be able to withstand his pressure.

“I don’t think he’s going to be able to withstand the heat that I bring – and I’m not looking to finish him; I’m looking to drag this into a five-round war, I’m going to drag him into the trenches.

“I’m going to do what Gastelum did, but better. Let’s see if he wants to leave early.”

Who do you think will win the fight between Robert Whittaker vs. Israel Adesanya?

Robert Whittaker’s manager Titus Day believes Israel Adesanya is just talking sh*t when it comes to their respective pays.

Adesanya claimed he was the only reason UFC 243 would be taking place in Marvel Stadium this Saturday. He also added that he was being paid substantially more than Whittaker for the event despite not being the undisputed champion:

“There’s a reason why I’m getting paid more than him, substantially more than him,” Adesanya said. “There’s a reason why my stock is much higher than him.”

But according to Day, there would be no way Adesanya would even know how much Whittaker was earning. And even if what he’s saying is true, it will benefit “The Reaper” the next time his fight is negotiated:

“How would he know, for a start it’s confidential so he wouldn’t know anyway, so he’s just talking s***,” Day told AAP (via Newshub)

“If he is, good, it just makes it better for us negotiating next time. Rob gets paid a lot, he’s very happy he’s got a great deal with the UFC.”

Whittaker and Adesanya meet in a middleweight title unification clash in the main event of UFC 243 on Saturday. It is regarded as the biggest Australasian fight in combat sport history and promises to deliver fireworks.

What do you make of Adesanya’s comments? Do you still think he is earning more than Whittaker for UFC 243?
