Chael Sonnen believes the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson has a claim to being the best lightweight of all time.

Nurmagomedov defends his lightweight title against Ferguson in the UFC 249 headliner on April 18 in Brooklyn, New York. It’s a fight the world has been waiting to see, especially after it was previously booked four times only to be called off four times.

Hopefully, the fifth time is the charm as the pair are the most dominant lightweights in the division, having both won their last 12 UFC fights in a row. But how does Sonnen see it playing out?

“You know, it’s very hard to pick against Khabib with what you’ve seen and I must also share with you I have a bias towards Tony because we are former teammates,” Sonnen told RT (via MMA Junkie). “I do really like Tony’s chances going into this, and I like them more and more as the fight gets closer.”

However, it’s hard to be certain for sure, especially when you consider how dominant Nurmagomedov has been his entire career as unlike Ferguson, he has never tasted defeat.

One thing is for sure for Sonnen — the winner of this fight is the ‘best ever’:

“When you’re [Nurmagomedov] 28-0 in any division, man, you claim that division,” Sonnen added. “Particularly when you are the world champion and he already got some heavy lifting out of the way on the way to the title. If you go back and look at the names that he beat – 10-8 rounds against guys, two or three 10-8 rounds against (Edson) Barboza, just by example – this guy is a hammer. But you are talking about Tony Ferguson – that’s a whole other animal.

“He’ll attack you from the back, he’ll attack you on the walkout, you don’t know what Tony Ferguson would do. I would never count him out. Whoever wins that fight is the best ever.”

Do you agree with Sonnen?

A middleweight bout between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Uriah Hall is reportedly in the works.

That’s according to sources from ESPN who claim that the pair have verbally agreed to a fight at UFC 249 which takes place April 18 in Brooklyn, New York. There is no official announcement from the UFC as of yet, but one can be expected soon.

Souza recently made the move to light heavyweight when he faced Jan Blachowicz at UFC Sao Paulo last month. However, it was a drab affair with Blachowicz getting the nod via unanimous decision.

That setback put Souza on a two-fight losing streak. However, the Brazilian claimed afterwards that he was suffering from illness and was proud of his performance given the circumstances.

He will now return to middleweight and get a chance to also return to the win column against Hall. The 35-year-old is on a two-fight winning streak — his first since 2015 — following victories over Bevon Lewis and Antonio Carlos Junior. A win over Souza would arguably be the biggest of his career.

UFC 249 will be headlined by a lightweight title fight between current champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

What do you think of Souza vs. Hall? Who takes it?

Lightweight contender Islam Makhachev has refuted claims that he has been offered a fight contract to face Kevin Lee at UFC 249.

Lee recently claimed that he was offered a fight with Makhachev to take place at UFC 249 on April 18, which will notably be headlined by Makhachev’s training partner Khabib Nurmagomedov’s lightweight title fight with Tony Ferguson.

Lee added that they were just waiting on Makhachev to agree to the bout.

However, that’s news for the Dagestan native who claims he hasn’t been offered anything. That said, he still wants the fight.

“Never been offered [a] Kevin Lee fight. Just send me the contract,” he tweeted on Sunday.

Lee and Makhachev have gone back-and-forth for a while now and it seems only inevitable that they will finally collide.

Makhachev, though, is confident in getting the win over “The Motown Phenom” as he also responded to a fan’s claim that he would get submitted if they fought:

“Lol. Not in this life,” he replied.

With both fighters seemingly interested in the fight, it should be a matter of weeks until we get official confirmation.

What do you think of the fight? And who do you think takes it?
