Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Justin Gaethje delivered in every way possible. 

The showdown served as the main event of the UFC 254 pay-per-view event on Saturday (October 24, 2020) from the Flash Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi aka Fight Island

As seen in the fight, Khabib was on point from the get-go. He continued to push the pace and was never out of the face of Gaethje, who did clip him from a few times. The second round saw Khabib lock in a triangle choke for the win. 

Nurmagomedov retained the UFC lightweight champion and extended his pro-MMA record to 29-0. After the fight, he announced his retirement from the sport after promising his mother that this would be the last time. He lost his father earlier this year. 

Coming into this fight, Khabib had talked about how the magic number in his mind for retirement was 30-0. He was one away from that and he had expressed interest in fighting former UFC middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre to fill that role. A fight against Tony Ferguson was also believed to be a possibility for Khabib although some could argue that he needed a win before doing so.

29-0. Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov is the undisputed UFC lightweight champion once again.

With a scary pace and pressure approach, Khabib forced Gaethje to fight off the back foot from the very early goings of the first-frame – eating a couple of notable leg kicks for his troubles, however.

With Gaethje visibly pressed and fatigued on route back to his corner and coach Trevor Wittman, the emphasis was put on continued leg kick attacks. Scoring a couple more damaging leg kicks, Gaethje gave up his back in a scramble, and with Khabib attempting to set-up a mounted triangle, he eventually scored a triangle from his back, choking Gaethje unconscious with referee Jason Herzog eventually pealing the Dagestani grappler off.

Former UFC middleweight champion, Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker seems to have earned his title rematch with kingpin, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya – with a 29-28 (x3) unanimous decision win to knock back surging contender, Jared ‘The Killa Gorilla’ Cannonier.

In a largely kickboxing back-and-forth, Whittaker fired off a picture-perfect jab throughout the three-round affair, with MMA Lab mainstay, Cannonier scoring punishing leg kicks behind the left-knee of the former champion.

Taking the opening two rounds, closely – Whittaker sealed the deal in the third and final round with a patented snap right high-kick, rattling Cannonier. Assuming mount, Whittaker couldn’t find a finish, with the resilient Cannonier displaying his massive heart to ride out a worrying moment before the close of the final round.

Opening up the UFC 254 main card is a light heavyweight encounter between Magomed Ankalaev and Ion Cutelaba.

Round 1: Cutelaba goes to the body. Ankalaev returns with a leg kick. Both fighters are a lot more patient compared to the first meeting. Ankalaev lands a leg kick but Cutelaba is able to counter with a big right. Ankalaev lands a body kick. Cutelaba teeps the stomach of Ankalaev. Not a lot of action since but Cutelaba is the one pressuring forward. Ankalaev drops Cutelaba with a left just as Cutelaba appeared to be trying a spinning backfist! However, Cutelaba is fine. But not for long as Ankalaev drops Cutelaba soon after with a combo and lands ground and pound to put him to sleep.

Official result: Magomed Ankalaev defeats Ion Cutelaba via knockout (R1, 4:19).
