Next up on the UFC 255 main card is a women’s flyweight encounter between Katlyn Chookagian and Cynthia Calvillo.

Round 1: The pair engage in plenty of striking to start the fight. Calvillo gets Chookagian down momentarily only for the latter to get up as they return to striking. Chookagian is the more active striker. Calvillo lands a leg kick and follows it up with a takedown attempt but Chookagian sprawls and defends superbly. Chookagian seems to have the edge in the striking but receives a big right from Calvillo. Calvillo lands a counter left hook. Chookagian continues to throw strikes but doesn’t land as much as the round comes to an end.

Round 2: The fight returns to striking as it’s more of the same. Chookagian is the one advancing forward as both fighters land during flurries. However, Calvillo is struggling to pull the trigger. Chookagian lands a nice front kick to the body. Chookagian blocks a high kick and returns with a leg kick. This has been a more dominant round for Chookagian as Calvillo is starting to wear a lot of bruises on her face. The round comes to an end with what has been a Chookagian clinic.

Round 3: Chookagian continues to lead the fight as Calvillo needs to show some urgency and look for a finish. Calvillo lands a nice leg kick. Chookagian looks like she’s taking the round off but she continues to land on Calvillo. Calvillo slips and blocks a head kick from Chookagian soon after. Calvillo momentarily looks for a takedown but Chookagian defends and they return to striking. It’s all Chookagian now even though Calvillo is having more success in this round. Calvillo lands a one two. Both fighters are swinging to end the fight. It comes to an end and it should be a comfortable decision victory for Chookagian.

Following their split draw last year in Brazil, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Paul ‘The Bearjew’ Craig holds bragging rights over mixed martial arts institute, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua via a second-round stoppage victory.

The Scottish Hit Squad mainstay utilised his wrestling on cue in the opening-frame to force veteran former PRIDE and UFC titleholder, Rua into grappling exchanges, and with a flurry of strikes from the back as Craig postured, Rua tapped to strikes.

Threatening with an anaconda finish in the first-round, Craig pulled Rua into his own guard, with the fan-favorite Curitiba native scrambling to his feet to see the second frame.

Forced to battle against the fence once again in the second round, Rua was taken down once again, despite a brief “oil check” attempt from the Chute Boxe trainee. Assuming back-mount and posturing, Craig, a prominant grappler from his back usually began raining down with strikes as he forced the 38-year-old Brazilian icon to submit to strikes.

With just a single-second remaining in the opening-round, streaking flyweight contender, Brandon Royval dislocated his right shoulder, with number-one contender, Brandon ‘The Assassin Baby’ Moreno able to finish with ground-and-pound – possibly sealing his status as the next challenger to the flyweight throne.

In a high-paced, action-packed opening frame which we’ve become accustomed to when either Moreno or Royvel enter the Octagon, the latter briefly threatened with a guillotine, before the former flirted with a possible twister setup.

With eyes firmly planted on tonight’s flyweight championship main event between Deiveson Figueiredo and Alex Perez, Moreno and Royval were involved in a probable title-eliminator. Scoring a stoppage with just a single-second remaining in the round, Moreno continued his short shots from half guard as Royval winced in pain.

With referee, Marc Goddard jumping to call a halt to the action, Royval began clutching at his right shoulder, which had appeared to pop from it’s socket, with head-coach Marc Montoya relieving his student from some agony as he relocated the extremity following the finish.

Joaquin ‘New Mansa’ Buckley’s star continues to rise. Fresh from a highlight-reel spinning-back kick knockout win over Impa Kasangany earlier this year, the 26-year-old moves to 2-1 in the promotion with a second-round flattening of Jordan ‘The Beverley Hills Ninja’ Wright.

Heaped with pressure following his stunning, jumping, spinning back-kick KO of Kasanganay in October, middleweight powerhouse, Buckley continued to streak with a massive second-round stoppage of the dangerous Wright.

Hurting the Antoni Hardonk and Vladimir Matyushenko trainee before the opening-round buzzer, Wright returned to his stool in back knick, before dropping to a defeat in the early goings of the second round.

Pressuring Wright early, Buckely, who plys his trade at Finney’s HIT Squad, forced Wright back to the fence, before unloading with a massive left hook, right hand combination, with Wright slumping to the canvas.

Following the win, Buckley spoke with UFC colour-commentator, Joe Rogan, and elected against naming rival, ‘The’ James Krause, although called for a UFC 257 pairing with the veteran on January 23rd.

Earlier this year opposite one-time UFC flyweight title challenger and fellow UFC 255 feature, Katlyn ‘Blonde Fighter’ Chookagian, elder Shevchenko sister, Antonina looked bemused during the numerous grappling exchanges.

Against former KSW flyweight champion, Ariane Lipski, striking ace, Shevchenko utilised some rare wrestling of her own in both the opening and second round on her way to a swarming ground-and-pound stoppage of the Brazilian.

Engaging and initiating the grappling scenario in the first-round, the Kyrgyzstan native almost gave up her back to recent kneebar finisher, Lipski, but managed to ride out a potentially hazardous moment until the closure of the frame.

Utilising her whizzer, Shevchenko assumed half-guard in the center of the Octagon, and began raining down with strikes to a shelled up Lipski, forcing referee, Chris Tognoni to jump to the Brazilian’s safety at Antonina returned to the winner’s enclosure, and marked a winning start for Team Shevchenko ahead of Valentina’s title defence against Lipski’s compatriot, Jennifer Maia later tonight.
