Jorge Masvidal Dustin Poirier

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Jorge Masvidal gave a glowing review of his American Top Team teammate Dustin Poirier ahead of his trilogy bout with Conor McGregor at UFC 264.

Masvidal has been training with Poirier on a plethora of occasions leading up to “The Diamond”‘s matchup with McGregor in a pivotal lightweight matchup. The winner will more than likely be the next title challenger to lightweight champion Charles Oliveira’s belt later this year.

In a recent appearance on the UFC 264 betting preview show, Masvidal provided some insight into the matchup between the two lightweight stars and more specifically; what training with Poirier has been like.

“He’s in phenomenal shape, man,” Masvidal said. “I’ve been there since the start of the camp. He came in in shape. He wasn’t messing around. He knew that the third fight was going to happen at some point. It’s not like he went home and gave himself any slack. He came back full six-packed out, doing five rounds. Usually, I see him progress and he gets better every week.”

“He faced him twice. He’s got a lot of strategies going into it. I think standup anyway because he’s dealt with it on two occasions, he knows how quickly he can find his timing. I don’t think he’s going to catch him by surprise, even on the feet. But I think that’s one of Conor’s biggest strengths.”

Masvidal announced recently that he’s looking at a return to the UFC octagon sometime this Fall, and more specifically a possible fight against the returning Nick Diaz or top welterweight contender Colby Covington.

Poirier enters the trilogy bout with a ton of momentum after knocking out McGregor earlier in January at UFC 257. It is widely anticipated to be one of the biggest pay-per-views in UFC history in the promotion’s return to T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

What are your thoughts on Jorge Masvidal’s comments regarding Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor 3?

After a staph infection forced Hawaii’s Louis Smolka [17-7-0] out, the search began to find a short-notice replacement for 135lb showman, ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley [13-1-0] at July 10th’s UFC 264.

The bright spark, O’Malley, is said to have had a number of contenders chomping at the bit for the chance to face off against the high-profile fighter. Yet many fans arched their eyebrows following the announcement that the little-known Kris Moutinho [9-4-0] would be squaring off with Suga, in his debut for the promotion. Better still, the clash serves as a tasty hors d’oeuvre to the McGregor vs Poirier III main meal at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena, live on PPV. Quite the induction for the 5’7” Moutinho.

The initial frontrunner to face ‘Suga’ was Vancouver, Washington native, Ricky Simón but that bout fell out of bed when the American Top Team Portland alumni was unable to make the 135lb bantamweight cut-off.

“They sent me a list of a couple of guys, Simón being one of them,” O’Malley told MMAJunkie I told them, ‘I want to stay on the card. I’ve had a great camp and my weight is trending towards a bantamweight fight. Find me someone that can make ’35.’ They sent me a list of names, Simón was the toughest one on there and I picked him. They called me and said, ‘He can’t make weight.’ I don’t know if it was a miscommunication that they put his name in there, for ’45. I told the UFC, I was pretty clear that I want to fight at ’35. So, I dunno. There’s a lot of people on Twitter that called me out that weren’t on that list. I’m just happy I’m on the card at ’35.”

O’Malley comes in as a -900 favourite for the bout. Yet, despite the criticism from the fans, the Montana Maverick remains wary that Moutinho isn’t getting the props he merits.

“A lot of people think it’s a lose-lose for me. I make a lot of money to go out there and knock the guy (out). This guy’s tough. I watched one of his fights this morning and he’s not just a scrub, he’s not a nobody. Well, he is kind of a nobody because no one really knows who he is. But to be fair, not a lot of people know who Simón is, really. He’s beat a couple dudes in the UFC. I couldn’t tell you how many fights he’s had in the UFC. So he comes in there, he shocks the world, it’s a huge fight for him. Props to him for stepping up to take it.”

While there’s evident respect for the skills of Moutinho, the 5’11’’ KO specialist, O’Malley, will still be looking to sizzle in Sin City.

“He might go in there thinking it’s a win-win for him. He goes out there and loses, he’s in the UFC. But I don’t just knock people out. I change people’s careers. Mentally, the way I knock people out, they step into that cage and they’re different the next time they get out there. So it could be the beginning of his career or it could be the end of his career. So, we’ll see.”

Do you expect Sean O’Malley to get the win at UFC 264?

According to Dana White, The 45th President, Justin Bieber and comedian Dave Chappelle are only a few names to expect amongst the UFC 264 celebrity guest list.

Ahead of the blockbuster trilogy match between Poirier and McGregor taking place this weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Dana White (President of the UFC) spoke with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, where he dropped a few names of celebrities we can expect to see this weekend.

White told TSN that amongst the 45th US President Donald Trump, Bieber, Chappelle, Kevin Durant, Odell Beckham Jr, Machine Gun Kelly, Megan Fox, Mel Gibson, Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker are others to expect with the celebrity guest list growing by the minute. White went on to state his excitement for the bout urging fans to purchase their pay-per-view in advance due to the increasing demand.

Trump recently made an appearance at UFC 244 back in Nov 2019 in New York where he was spotted cage side. Trump had been in attendance for the BMF (Baddest Mother F**ker) Title bout between Masvidal and Diaz. The 45th President became the first U.S. President to attend a UFC event. With Trump being a fan of the UFC, it is no surprise that he will be making an appearance this weekend with the stacked sold out card bringing life back to Vegas.

In an interview with Brett Okamoto of ESPN, White had confirmed that UFC 264 was not only set to be one of the most spectacular events to take place in Vegas but that it was also set to have more celebrity fans in attendance than any other UFC event in all of the companies history.

Amongst those already mentioned, who would you like to see at UFC 264, and furthermore, who would you like them cheering on?
