Conor McGregor Dustin Poirier

The highly-anticipated trilogy bout between UFC lightweight stars Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is just weeks away at UFC 264, and the promotion has released a trailer to get combat sports fans excited for the fight.

The trailer first aired during the main card of UFC 263 and drew a wide variety of reactions from around the MMA community, including commentator Joe Rogan on the broadcast. This isn’t surprising as the UFC always looks ahead to the next pay-per-view during the broadcasts; but this one felt different.

McGregor and Poirier will complete their trilogy that spans two different weight classes on July 10th in Las Vegas. The card will mark the UFC’s first full-capacity pay-per-view in the fight capital of the world after months of holding events at the UFC Apex as opposed to T-Mobile Arena.

The trailer does a spectacular job at highlighting the rise and falls of both McGregor and Poirier before, during and after their paths have crossed on the sport’s biggest stage.

“You can have all the money in the world, but you can’t buy heart, I got that,” Poirier said during the trailer. “In the second fight with Conor, I knocked his ass out. We need to do this a third time, we owe each other.”

McGregor hasn’t shied away from challenges after devastating losses, with the prime example being his win in the rematch over Nate Diaz at UFC 202. McGregor sounds primed and ready to rewrite history.

“I lost that night, it stung, and I must get that back,” McGregor said. “Now I have an opportunity to get my revenge.”

Poirier knocked out McGregor at UFC 257 earlier this year in the second round of their fight in Abu Dhabi. After the bout, McGregor seemed keen on getting the trilogy fight with Poirier, who allegedly passed on a UFC lightweight title bout to fight McGregor.

The winner of the trilogy between McGregor and Poirier is almost certainly the next title contender to UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira‘s belt. UFC 264’s main event figures to be one of the most important fights in the promotion’s history, and arguably the most important in the history of the lightweight division.

Dana White Struggling To Find Back-Up For Poirier Vs. McGregor III

Dana White wants to ensure that the UFC 264 goes on without a hitch.

There’s only one problem: White’s struggling to find the right backup fighter for the main event.

White is gambling that UFC 264 will be the biggest PPV event of the year for the promotion. The first full capacity event in the promotion’s hometown, Las Vegas, the scheduled main event is one of the most anticipated rubber matches in recent MMA history. However, the past year has shown the UFC and the rest of the world anything can happen. Therefore, having a contingency plan is critical.  White recognizes the need, but it has been challenging.

Speaking recently with Bleacher Report, White confirmed that finding a suitable backup has not been an easy task. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I’m actually looking for someone right now to be the backup on that card,” White said. “Nobody’s jumping out. Nobody’s kicking down my door.”

To better understand White’s difficulty, it’s essential to understand the activity in the lightweight division thus far in 2021. Dustin Poirier (27-6 MMA, 19-5 UFC) and Conor McGregor (22-5 MMA, 10-3 UFC) are ranked one and five in the lightweight division. Many had originally speculated that the rematch would be for the vacated belt after undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov unexpectedly retired.

However, the UFC decided to allow Charles Oliviera and Michael Chandler to compete for the title instead, with Oliveira emerging victorious. Incidentally, the same card saw three of the top six lightweights in action. Both Chandler(#4) and Beneil Dariush (#3) expressed after their fights that they would like time off, hoping to return to the octagon towards the end of the year. Tony Ferguson (#6) suffered a decisive loss that left many wondering if he would retire. So with most of the top of the division tied up, only one name remains a viable option, Justin Gaethje (#2).

With a loss to Poirier and having yet to face McGregor, Gaethje seems like the logical option. However, he has expressed his disappointment with how the UFC has handled him since his loss to Nurmagomedov. Getting an offer to be a backup for the biggest fight of the year is likely not ideal for him at this time.

If both McGregor and Poirier can remain healthy and compete on July 10th, there is no issue. If not, hopefully, one of the top contenders in the division steps up to help White save the card.

Who do you think Dana White should vigorously pursue to be the backup for the UFC 264 main event?

Michel Pereira Niko Price

A big welterweight matchup between Michel Pereira and Niko Price has been added to the already stacked UFC 264 pay-per-view scheduled to take place this summer, as first reported by AG Fight.

Pereira and Price are widely considered to be two of the most dynamic strikers in the UFC. Pereira has won his last two fights over Khaos Williams and Zelim Imadaev, while Price is looking to get back on the winning track after dropping his last two fights and serving an NSAC suspension after testing positive for marijuana.

Both welterweights are on the outside looking in when it comes to the UFC welterweight rankings. Pereira and Price have the opportunity to claim a spot in the rankings with a win on a pay-per-view that has the potential to smash records.

UFC 264 is headlined by the highly-anticipated trilogy between lightweights Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, in a re-match of their last fight back at UFC 257 in January. The winner of the trilogy bout is widely expected to be the next in line to challenge lightweight champion Charles Oliveira for the belt.

After his last win over Williams, Pereira called out Anthony Pettis, but Pettis parted ways with the promotion shortly thereafter and went on to sign a multi-fight deal with Professional Fighters League.

Both fighters are well-known for flashy tactics inside the octagon. Price tends to press the action in his fight and Pereira is similar in that way.

Other fights on the upcoming UFC 264 card include the co-main event featuring top welterweight contenders Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson, along with a confirmed middleweight fight between Hu Yaozong and Alen Amedovski.

Price and Pereira are set to square off in a potential dark horse candidate for Fight of the Night at UFC 264. Fans can expect fireworks from these two in the octagon and a big jump in notoriety for the winner.

What are your thoughts on Michel Pereira vs. Niko Price being added to UFC 264?
