Former UFC middleweight title contender and current broadcaster Chael Sonnen thinks that Conor McGregor‘s post-fight comments at UFC 264 are being overblown by the general public.

The controversy stems from McGregor’s comments during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan while he was receiving medical attention after he snapped his left leg in the closing seconds of the opening round against Dustin Poirier. A furious McGregor attacked Poirier and his wife in the octagon just minutes after the official decision was read as a doctor’s stoppage win for Poirier.

Despite the uncomfortable and offensive tone behind McGregor’s comments, Sonnen defended McGregor for continuing to promote himself despite the unusual circumstances.

“Think about it if you’re in Conor’s spot,” Sonnen said. “Your leg is broken and you know right now at this moment, the truth: which is my career has just changed. Whether it’s over for good or it’s not, it’s going to be one hell of a path back. Imagine if you would yell at somebody, imagine if this could be your last day at work unless you throw a hail mary pass.”

“Going after Dustin’s wife, I could understand how that’s out of line. Guys after wins deal with an adrenaline dump. Imagine the low you would be in if you were in Conor’s shoes. To attempt to judge Conor for not being happy with the situation, because of the words he’s used, I don’t know about that. Give a pause towards the hatred towards Conor McGregor.”

Leading up to the fight at UFC 264, McGregor had said on multiple occasions that he intended to send Poirier out on a stretcher when they fought. But after he was the one who was carted out after suffering a fractured tibia, fans, and critics around the MMA community called “karma” when referring to McGregor’s situation.

McGregor is expected to be on crutches for at least six weeks, and will then begin the process of rehabilitating and eventually working his way back to a UFC return.

Many around the MMA community have theorized what could’ve led to Conor McGregor‘s leg break in the UFC 264 main event against Dustin Poirier; ranging from a pre-existing injury suffered in camp, to a stiff check by Poirier during the bout.

But a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist has weighed in on what he thinks could’ve been the reason for the injury.

Dr. Brian Sutterer has his own YouTube channel with over 500-thousand subscribers, in which he breaks down sports injuries and why they happen. In a recent post, Sutterer goes into specific detail behind McGregor’s fractured lower tibia, in which he underwent surgery directly following UFC 264 this past weekend.

“If we look at the contact on this kick, it doesn’t even hit McGregor’s shin, or the tibia, which was the primary bone that was injured,” Sutterer said in the video. “I still feel this was more the result of cumulative damage, rather than one specific check or one specific block.”

“The primary contact here is on the fibula. That’s the bone on the outside portion of the leg. I don’t suspect this will have been enough energy to break the fibula, as well as transfer enough through to break the tibia.”

After the fight, Poirier opined that the injury could’ve happened during a checked leg kick earlier in the fight, but Sutterer disagreed. McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh has also said that McGregor was dealing with issues with his left ankle during his training camp for the fight.

The UFC is expected to issue a medical suspension for McGregor through the end of 2021, with the earliest return tentatively set for early 2022. Poirier will fight for the UFC lightweight title against Charles Oliveira later this year and a rematch between McGregor and Poirier could come shortly after.

Although Conor McGregor is now riding the first losing streak of his professional career, he headlined UFC 264 this past weekend which reportedly sold 1.8 Million PPV buys, according to The Sports Business Journal.

If true, this massive event would notch itself as the second most bought UFC PPV event in company history. Residing in a comfortable lead is UFC 229, headlined by McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, which did 2.4 million buys. Behind UFC 264 lies UFC 202 and UFC 257, both McGregor headlined events.

UFC President Dana White hinted that UFC 264 had momentum in the pre-buy that could lend itself to being a top 5 PPV event in company history. Although some deemed it outlandish, this first reported number of 1.8 million now seemingly supports White’s pre-fight claims.

Of the 1,800,000 buys, it is reported that about 1,300,000 of them came nationally, meaning bought inside the United States. This is a massive number for the world wide leader in mixed martial arts, which seemingly gains more popularity with each and every event.

At UFC 264, Dustin Poirier capped off his third, and probably not final, bout against Conor McGregor with a win. McGregor suffered a grueling injury to his shin during the bout and was admitted for surgery the following morning.

In conjunction with the main event, Stephen Thompson fought Gilbert Burns in what seemed to be a title-eliminator. Burns won and now has a stronghold on his #2 contender slot behind just Colby Covington, although White was all but impressed with the fight and Burns’ overall performance.

With Conor McGregor still bringing in massive numbers for the company, who will we see McGregor fight next?
