Ciryl Gane has dismissed the notion that his sparring spats with Francis Ngannou will offer him any edge ahead of their UFC Heavyweight Championship unification bout.

Gane’s conquest of #2 ranked, Derrick ‘The Black Beast’ Lewis at Saturday Night’s UFC 265, saw the dominant Frenchman snatch the interim belt with a third-round, ground & pound TKO. With the gold strapped firmly around his waist, ‘Bon Gamin’ Gane is now in pole position to face off against Heavyweight Ruler, Ngannou.

The two have a spotted history, with both having studied under Fernand Lopez, head coach of the MMA Factory, France’s largest MMA facility. Yet, whilst Gane has remained loyal to his compatriot in Paris, ‘The Predator’, Ngannou absconded to Las Vegas’ Xtreme Couture, in his quest for Heavyweight glory.

Whilst some time has now passed since the 6’3” Ngannou’s departure for The States, the two will no doubt share a certain familiarity when they square off in the octagon. The real question is, who will have added more to their arsenal since their gym spats?

In the UFC 265 post-fight presser, striking aficionado Gane highlighted how he won’t overanalyse his experience scrapping the 265lb Champ:

“Training is something, but the fight is another thing. [I won’t be] surprised – everyone knows Francis’ strengths. Everyone knows my strengths. We’ll see.”

However, despite Ngannou fleeing the MMA Factory’s nest, Monsieur Gane was quick to downplay any animosity between the titans.

“For me, it’s just a sport. It’s just a sport. I just want to make a show. I just want to make a performance. This is my job, and I just want to make money.”

As for when the two will face off, UFC President Dana White outlined his intentions to make the match before the end of 2021 but admitted scheduling issues may hinder this ambition.

Gane, on the other hand, is in no rush to unify the championships. With a new child due to be born in the forthcoming weeks, he has set his sights on some much-needed downtime with the family. Yet, rest assured, he will be ready to go when the Cameroonian Canon comes calling.

“Some people ask me about the end of this year – it’s possible. But yes, I did a lot in the last one and a half years. I’m waiting for a baby and I just want to rest a little bit. Maybe a few months. Then we’ll see.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Rafael Fiziev Bobby Green

The controversial judge that awarded Rafael Fiziev a clean sweep on the scorecards in his UFC 265 bout with Bobby Green has explained his reasoning behind giving Fiziev the third round, despite Green upending Fiziev in the round’s striking statistics.

JJ Ferraro is a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation judge who was criticized by the MMA community and the UFC 265 broadcast team after it was revealed that Fiziev earned a 30-27 scorecard, while the other two (Chris Lee and Sal D’Amato) each gave Fiziev two of the three rounds. Fiziev still went on to win the fight, but the scoring adds another chapter to unusual scoring by MMA judges across all promotions over the past few years.

Green surged in the third round and had Fiziev in deep waters late in the fight, which made many around the MMA community expect that he won the round fairly easily despite being clearly behind in the fight to Fiziev. Ferraro, in a rare move, explained the reasoning for giving Fiziev the third round despite Green forcing the action and landing the most strikes total in the last five minutes.

“Strikes that are deemed most effective are strikes that have the potential to end the fight,” Ferraro said in a lengthy Twitter statement. “Those are the strikes that hold more weight than any other strikes. It doesn’t matter if they are punches, kicks, elbows, you name it, we have to assess who is trying to end the fight with their weapons.”

“It happens all the time in MMA. Round 3 could have gone either way. One of the other judges told me immediately after the fight that he could see my score as well and was not surprised or shocked at all when I went to Fizev 10-9.”

Ferraro went on to specifically target the broadcast team of Daniel Cormier, Jon Anik, and former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz for alleged bias commentary during and following the bout. The broadcast team had its fair share of criticism for the judges throughout the evening, especially following the Fiziev vs. Green bout.

What are your thoughts on JJ Ferraro’s explanation on the Rafael Fiziev vs. Bobby Green bout?

Jose Aldo is gunning to fight TJ Dillashaw.

Aldo made it two wins in a row after outpointing Pedro Munhoz over three rounds in their bantamweight encounter at UFC 265 last night.

While the Brazilian still hopes to become a two-weight champion, another title shot doesn’t seem likely as of yet. That’s because Aldo only lost to Petr Yan in their vacant bantamweight title fight last year.

And with Yan expected to challenge current champion Aljamain Sterling in a rematch later this year, Aldo will have to remain active and continue racking up a few more wins.

Dillashaw is certainly one name that interests the former featherweight king and he is expecting that fight to take place before the end of the year.

“It would be great for me to fight with Dillashaw,” Aldo said at the post-fight press conference (via Middle Easy). “Hopefully by December. I think it would be a great fight and that’s what we expect. That’s what I’m expecting right now.”

Dillashaw only returned to action last month when he defeated Cory Sandhagen via split decision in a five-round war. And although he suffered many injuries in that fight and required surgery, Dillashaw wasn’t expecting a long layoff.

“Went in for a mri today, found out that I suffered a displaced Bucket Handle tear of the Lateral Meniscus and a Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) rupture at the end of the first round landing ground and pound while being lazy in a compromised position,” Dillashaw said last month. “The good news is that these tears are repairable and will have a very speedy recovery. Going in for surgery in the next couple days.

“Loved being in the cage even though I had to push through some adversities to grit out the win. Thank you for the support, it’s belt season now.”

With Dillashaw also likely having to wait for a title shot, a fight with Aldo certainly makes sense in the meantime.
