Conor McGregor has shown his respect to Nate Diaz as the Stockton-native heads into his final fight inside the UFC when he takes on Tony Ferguson later tonight in the main event of UFC 279.
The legacies of both men will forever be intertwined for the entertainment they provided during their rivalry whilst competing in the UFC. Now as it seems Diaz will fight under the promotion one final time McGregor took the opportunity to applaud his fellow competitor on what has been an illustrious career.
“Congrats Nate Diaz on making it to the end of his contractual obligations with the UFC, and as a bonafide superstar goer. An incredible feat. Fair play.
Our trilogy will happen.”
Diaz was the first man to beat Conor McGregor inside the UFC when he stunned the world by submitting the Irishmen in the 2nd round of their first matchup at UFC196. McGregor would ultimately exact his revenge when he secured a majority decision victory over his foe five months later at UFC 202. The fights themselves delivered both times, but outside of the octagon, both parties delivered even further by helping to create a massive buzz around the sport.
In what has been arguably one of the most frantic fight weeks we have ever seen, Nate Diaz will now headline UFC 279 in what fans perceive as a legends matchup when he takes on fellow promotional veteran, Tony Ferguson.
Originally slated to face the undefeated prospect, Khamzat Chimaev, that original matchup went up in smoke following the Chechen fighter missing weight by a staggering 7.5 pounds after not being medically cleared to continue cutting weight. Ferguson himself was scheduled to take on fan-favorite Li Jingliang in his return to the welterweight division but following the knowledge of Chimaev’s weight miss the UFC has opted to adjust these matchups to suit.
Now in what many believe is a much-improved card, the following matchups will take place at UFC 279.
Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson
Khamzat Chimaev vs. Kevin Holland
Li Jingliang vs. Daniel Rodriguez
Every other originally scheduled bout will continue as normal.

Ahead of his UFC 279 headliner tonight against rescheduled foe, Tony Ferguson, fan-favorite veteran, Nate Diaz criticized the promotion’s sneaker partnership with former professional wrestler, The Rock – mocking the shoe’s design in an interview with the promotion’s broadcast partner, ESPN.
Diaz, who enters his final contracted fight with the organization, was initially scheduled to headline UFC 279 against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev in ‘Sin City’, however, the Chechen-born fighter’s staggering seven and a half pound weight miss, forced the headliner’s cancellation.
As a result, Diaz, whose contractual obligations with the promotion come to an end following UFC 279, will now share the Octagon with former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson at the welterweight limit – over the course of five rounds.
Chimaev remains on the card despite his glaring weight miss, however, moving to a co-main event slot against Kevin Holland at a catchweight limit of 180lbs, while Li Jingliang now tackles Californian striker, Daniel Rodriguez.
Speaking with ESPN during his post-ceremonial weigh-in with Ferguson, Nate Diaz criticized the promotion’s sponsorship deal with The Rock and Under Armor, in a segment which was subsequent cut from his interview with UFC roving reporter, Megan Olivi.
“These shoes f*cking suck,” Nate Diaz said while holding up his shoes to the camera. “Look at these shoes, they (the UFC) made me put this sh*t on. F*ck these shoes.”
The promotion recently confirmed a partnership with The Rock as well as Under Armor to provide sneakers to fighters on their roster, however, as per reporter, John S. Nash – fighters will not receive any percentage of revnue as part of the sponsorship.
“Asked around and not only are fighters not going to get paid anything to wear the shoes, the UFC is apparently requiring fighters to do interviews with (Dwanye) Johnson’s (The Rock) media company, Seven Bucks,” Nash tweeted.
