UFC set to debut new curved glove for UFC 287 reduce eye pokes

Following years of criticizm and a call for a revamp design, it appears the UFC are set to debut a new glove design at this weekend’s UFC 287 pay-per-view event in Miami, Florida – in a bid to reduce unintentional eye pokes and fouls.

Slated to return to the ‘Sunshine State’ this weekend, the Octagon is slated to feature an undisputed middleweight championship rematch between current division kingpin, Alex Pereira, and former champion, Israel Adesanya – in a re-run of their bitter championship fight back in November of last year at Madison Square Garden.

In the event’s co-headliner, one-time welterweight title challenger, Gilbert Burns makes his second outing of the annum already, taking on former two-time title chaser, Jorge Masvidal – with the latter attempting to rebound to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since 2019 in front of a partisan hometown crowd.

And during fight week, Rio de Janeiro native, Burns displayed what appear to be new mixed martial arts gloves set to be donned by fighters at UFC 287 this weekend in the promotion’s flagship event, in a bid to help reduce the occurrence of eye pokes.

“I love it, because people don’t see, but it kind of makes your fingers go down, so less eye pokes,” Gilbert Burns said during UFC 287 Countdown about apparent new gloves. “So, I like it, see my hands are relaxed – [the fingers] don’t stay here [outstrected]. Way better for no eye pokes. I like these new gloves.”

Attempting to avenge a knockout loss to Pereira back in November of last year, Adesanya will feature at UFC 287, in search of a return to winning ways at the middleweight limit for the first time in his mixed martial arts career.

And sporting non-champion shorts for the first time since 2019 in the UFC 287 headliner, Adesanya has opted to don a pair of blue-colored compression shorts for this weekend’s Miami-Dade Center main event.

Alex Pereira no interest in Khamzat Chimaev fight UFC 287 I don't even talk about him

Ahead of his incoming UFC 287 title rematch with former undisputed champion, Israel Adesanya this weekend, current middleweight kingpin, Alex Pereira has zero interest in sharing the Octagon with the undefeated welterweight challenger, Khamzat Chimaev, claiming the Chechen-born contender “talks too much”.

Headlining UFC 287 this Saturday in Miami, Florida, Pereira looks to end his rivalry with former undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Adesanya – having collected the division crown against the Nigerian-Kiwi back in November of last year.

Featuring at the Madison Square Garden flagship event last year, Pereira managed to rally to defeat City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya with a stunning fifth round standing TKO win at the Octagon fence.

And in the weeks removed from the bout, Pereira was linked with a title defense with the current #3 ranked welterweight contender, Chimaev, who had claimed the Sao Paulo native had rejected the opportunity to fight him at UFC 282 on short-notice in December of last year.

Alex Pereira unmoved by calls for a fight with Khamzat Chimaev next

Focused on this weekend’s title re-run with Adesanya, Pereira remains unmoved on a fight with the unbeaten, Chimaev, weighing up potential fights with former champion, Robert Whittaker, and compatriot, Paulo Costa next instead.

“This week, I’m obviously focused on Israel (Adesanya), but talk about [Robert] Whittaker, and Paulo Costa,” Alex Pereira told assembled media during his availability on Wednesday. “I know they want to fight me. They were never disrespectful. They always kept their composure, but when you talk about [Khamzat] Chimaev, he’s the kind of guy that seems to be a little lost, he talks too much.”

“Right after my last fight, he said that he wanted to fight me at this weight class,” Alex Pereira said. “He knows it was right after the fight, everybody’s injured. I could not make that weight so I challenged him to a fight at 205 [pounds]. He ran. To be honest, if it’s Whittaker or Paulo Costa, if the organization wants to put us to fight, it’s my job to fight as UFC champion, but I don’t even want to talk about Chimaev.”

Sidelined since September of last year, Chimaev co-headlined UFC 279 against incoming UFC 287 feature, Kevin Holland, submitting the Riverside native with a first round D’Arce choke in an impromptu catchweight pairing.

Israel Adesanya channels 8 Mile ahead of UFC 287 you only get one shot Alex Pereira

Ahead of his third combat sports outing with undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, former division kingpin, Israel Adesanya has taken inspiration from 2002 drama ‘8 Mile’ – claiming this is his one shot at avenging his prior defeats to the Brazilian at UFC 287.

Headlining the flagship pay-per-view event for the organization, Adesanya touches down in Miami, Florida in pursuit of his second middleweight title reign, undisputedly, as he draws arch-rival, Pereira in a championship re-run.

Drawing his past kickboxing enemy in November of last year atop a UFC 281 card at Madison Square Garden, Adesanya suffered a stunning fifth round standing TKO loss to the Sao Paulo striker, dropping his championship in the process.

And ahead of the ‘Sunshine State’ showdown, Israel Adesanya, who admitted his surprise to find himself place as a betting favorite to defeat the Brazilian – appears to have taken inspiration from the above-mentioned, ‘8 Mile’ for his championship clash with Pereira.

“I’m down two fights [to Alex Pereira] in kickboxing, one fight in MMA, so I’m down three,” Israel Adesanya told assembled media during his availability this week. “And this is like in every movie – your one shot. This is my Eminem moment – my ‘8 Mile’ moment. You get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow, this opportunity comes once in a lifetime, and this is it – this is it for me.”

Seeing his championship reign ending his spectacular fashion in the penultimate month of last year, Adesanya had racked up successful knockbacks over Yoel Romero, Paulo Costa, Marvin Vettori, Robert Whittaker, and most recently, Jared Cannonier during his time as undisputed division pacesetter.

Israel Adesanya welcomes fresh matchups post-UFC 287

Eyeing vengeance against the aforenoted, Pereira at the Miami-Dade Center in Saturday, Adesanya claimed that he would topple the former, before then searching out other opponents to kick off a projected second term in office atop the middleweight pile

UFC 287: Alex Pereira vs. Israel Adesanya II - Betting Preview

Yet to enter an Octagon outing during his UFC tenure as a betting underdog, current odds appear to point to a continuance of the trend for former undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya – who is fast closing as a favorite, albeit tight, over arch-enemy, Alex Pereira ahead of their UFC 287 title rematch on Saturday.

Headlining in Miami, Florida this weekend – Nigerian-Kiwi striking sensation, Adesanya looks to collect the undisputed middleweight title for the second time, having dropped his undisputed crown back in November of last year in Madison Square Garden.

Rematching Sao Paulo knockout ace, Pereira in the ‘Sunshine State’ atop a UFC 287 flagship event, Adesanya is yet to defeat the Brazilian phenom across their storied combat sports rivalry – boasting an infamous 0-3 record against the former, capped off by last November’s knockout defeat.

Suffering his first middleweight loss in his professional mixed martial arts career, City Kickboxing staple, Adesanya had built up an impressive lead on all three judge’s scorecards in New York City, however, was stopped in the final frame with a barrage of strikes at the Octagon fence from Pereira – who record just his fourth UFC victory, and minted himself as the new king of the middleweights.

However, despite his shocking victory over Adesanya at UFC 281 in ‘The Mecca’ late last year, the Brazilian is hotly entering this weekend’s title rematch as a betting underdog, with BetWay offering the defending champion as short as +100 in this tightly contested re-run.

Challenging for gold against Pereira, as noted earlier, Adesanya has yet to step foot inside the Octagon as a betting underdog, and despite close margins, BetWay have placed the former gold holder as a -125 betting favorite to land his first professional triumph over the Brazilian in the ‘Sunshine State’.

With outright betting on the much-anticipated contest tight to boot, prop bets on a finish between the duo are even tighter – with Pereira narrowly favored, currently, to hand the ex-titleholder another career knockout loss – having previously stopped Adesanya twice in combat sports.

A former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing champion, Pereira is available as a close -200 betting favorite to defeat Adesanya with strikes of any kind come Saturday night in Florida, with punters able to pick up the former champion as an almost pick ‘em underdog as short as +300.

As always, the possibility of pre-fight jitters setting in – resulting in a blistering and timely finish are possible, however, inside 60 seconds of the first round, BetWay are still offering defending champion, Pereira as a -5,000 favorite over the +,10,000 underdog, Adesanya, to score a finish inside the opening minute.

A brutal knockout artist, prior to his victory over Adesanya in earth-shattering fashion in November, Pereira debuted in the UFC in the year prior – at the same venue, no less, dispatching Andreas Michailidis with a brutal second round flying knee KO.

Turning in a valuable unanimous decision win over compatriot, Bruno Silva since then, Pereira then earned a rekindled rivalry with Adesanya with a highlight-reel first round knockout of the then-surging, Sean Strickland during last summer’s International Fight Week in July.

Jorge Masvidal and Kevin Holland were reportedly involved in an altercation ahead of their respective UFC 287 bouts on Saturday night.

Twitter user @BarryMacokner94 posted a video clip showing the two outspoken fan favorites being separated during a verbal spat just days away from their returns to the Octagon.

According to the individual that captured the footage, things got much worse than what we can see in the above clip. “Argument lmao sh*t was intense in person,” the uploader tweeted. “I didn’t film the end but it got worse.”

Kevin Holland Addressed the Altercation with Jorge Masvidal on Instagram

Before footage of the incident emerged online, Kevin Holland addressed the confrontation and suggested that the UFC would probably switch up his opponent again, a reference to the UFC 279 change-up that saw him go from fighting Daniel Rodriguez to Khamzat Chimaev after things got physical between the two during a media event.

“Let me just go ahead and say it, that video’s going to come out, and then they’re probably going to do an opponent change again! F*ck!” Holland said on Instagram.

What exactly caused things to escalate is unknown at this time, but this is not the first time that Kevin Holland and Jorge Masvidal have been involved in situations like this. Two months removed from his backstage incident with Khamzat Chimaev, Holland got into it with the former UFC welterweight champion backstage at UFC 281.

Masvidal is no stranger to controversy himself. ‘Gamebred’ is scheduled to face a criminal trial next month for an alleged assault on former friend turned bitter rival Colby Covington. Masvidal reportedly attacked Covington outside of a Miami steakhouse in March 2022.
