Ahead of his expected undisputed welterweight title siege later this year, former interim champion, Colby Covington has welcomed a future showcase against lightweight kingpin, Islam Makhachev – describing the hypothetical bout an “easy” clash for him.

Covington, the current number two ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined from active competition since he headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year, returning to the winner’s enclosure in a unanimous decision win over arch-rival, the now-retired Jorge Masvidal.

As for Makhachev, the Russian grappling ace headlined UFC 284 back in February, successfully defending his lightweight crown against his featherweight counterpart, Alexander Volkanovski in a close unanimous judging success.

And earlier this month, the American Kickboxing Academy staple was announced as the headliner of UFC 284 in October in Abu Dhabi, UAE – taking on former champion, Charles Oliveira in the pair’s title rematch.

Despite yet to book his own respective comeback, outspoken Clovis native, Covington is expected to co-headline UFC 295 in November against incumbent welterweight titleholder, Leon Edwards at Madison Square Garden.

And furthermore, if he strikes gold against the Birmingham native, Covington has welcomed the possibility of a future title defense against Sambo specialist, Makhachev next.

Colby Covington welcomes potential Islam Makhachev title fight at welterweight

“I love it, boys,” Colby Covington told Submission Radio of a potential fight with Islam Makhachev. “I mean, if you look at the storyline, you know, you got the USA versus Russia angle. I think the fight sells. It’s a big fight, you know – it’s not a competitive fight. I win it going away, I beat him pillar to post.”

“He can’t hang with me in the wrestling,” Colby Covington explained. “He definitely can’t strike with me, I trained the last guy that knocked him out (Adriano Martins) and another southpaw that I trained to prepare for that fight so, you know. It’s an easy fight – it’s Rocky 4 story. Rocky versus (Ivan) Drago. Let’s get it on. If he wants his business, yeah, oh man, he’s in for a rude awakening, boys. I will say, that’s a big fight. So, that’s an exciting one. We’ll see what happens.”

While undisputed heavyweight champion, Jon Jones is slated to headline UFC 295 in November, former interim welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington has made his case to feature on the card – due to the apparent unreliability of his former roommate and bitter foe.

Covington, the current number two ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined from active competition since he headlined UFC 272 back in March of last year, defeating another arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal in a one-sided unanimous decision victory over the Floridian.

And expected to compete for undisputed welterweight gold in his return to active competition later this year, Clovis native, Covington, has been backed to fight against Birmingham native, Leon Edwards in his immediate return – with a title pairing pegged for a potential landing at UFC 295 in November at Madison Square Garden.

Colby Covington calls for title fight return at UFC 295 in November

Links to a New York City showdown has come as music to the ears of Covington as a result, with the Californian claiming he would be more than happy to feature on the card, questioning the reliability of incumbent heavyweight best, Jones.

“I love this company so much, I’m a company man,” Colby Covington told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “I love UFC. It’s such an honor to fight for UFC. So, let’s do the biggest and best business we can do in the Mecca, the heart, Madison Square Garden. New York City is Trump country. It is Colby Covington country. This fight needs to go to Madison Square Garden.”

“We all know why; Jon Jones is unreliable,” Colby Covington continued. “Come on, let’s be honest. The guy could fail his steroid test. He could beat his wife again, end up in jail. He could do all these different things. Wasn’t he the first guy that ever got a whole entire event canceled for him?”

At the time of publication, Endicott native, Jones has been booked to headline UFC 295 in November, taking on the returning former two-time division champion, Stipe Miocic in a heavyweight title defense, with the former also weighing up a retirement following his hometown homecoming.

“From my side, I’ve been ready since day one,” Colby Covington told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “Since the Jorge (Masvidal) fight, I’ve accepted every fight that’s been offered my way. First it was Dustin (Poirier). They (the UFC) wanted to make that fight. They saw the potential and a big fight there and Dustin’s a p*ssy. He’s scared. He ran way from the challenge, now we know that he’s all talk, he’s no walk.”

Expected to challenge for undisputed welterweight gold in his return to the Octagon, Covington has been pegged to fight current champion, Leon Edwards in his comeback fight – with links to a showdown at UFC 295 in a co-headlining bout at Madison Square Garden in November of this annum

Francis Ngannou rep claims Jon Jones was nervous during recent staredown at PFL event

Francis Ngannou’s manager still hopeful of a future clash with reigning UFC heavyweight champion, Jon Jones.

While Ngannou has certainly moved on to greener pastures, it is undoubtedly a disappointment to MMA fans that Ngannou Vs. Jones was not made. It was a fight that had been built up for years, but with ‘The Predator’ contractual disputes with the UFC, and Jones’ prolonged move up to heavyweight, it was never meant to be.

Both men now have big fights booked, Ngannou will be taking on Tyson Fury later on this year, and Jones will face Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 295.

Francis Ngannou’s representation sees a Jon Jones fight as a ‘possibility’

While the pair are now in different organizations, it still hasn’t stopped Francis Ngannou and Jon Jones from chirping at one another, even coming face-to-face at a recent PFL event.

A lot of things will have to go right for the fight to be made in the future, but Ngannou’s manager, Marquel Martin, is still hopeful of everything coming together. Appearing on The MMA Hour, he explained that the clash is still ‘possible’.

“I think that timing was just interesting, that obviously [Jones] was cornering Maurice Greene and obviously PFL is going to have us out,” Martin said. “But just being there, it almost felt like a tease for me, just sitting there. It was like, ah, this is what we’ve talked about, this is what we wanted, this is what we asked for. We literally tried to get that fight for three years. Three years. I think it’s still a possibility. I know that sometimes maybe cooler heads prevail. I’m hoping that Dana [White] somehow sees this, we want to make that fight. (H/T MMAFighting)

“Let’s do that fight. The world deserves and wants to see that fight. Again, he’s one of the greatest promoters out there. We’re not the ones saying no to that fight, just know that.”
