Colby Covington reflects on Jorge Masvidal win I can't believe how much UFC paid me to beat up that bum

Former interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington claims he is still dumbfounded by the UFC’s decision to pay his an apparently lucrative payday in his victory over former two-time title chaser, Jorge Masvidal back in March of last year – describing his long-time rival as a “backstabbing bum”.

Covington, who headlined UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, suffered a one-sided unanimous decision loss to incumbent undisputed champion, Leon Edwards in the pair’s championship fight.

The one-sided loss came as Covington’s third in an undisputed title fight, following a pair of defeats to former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman.

Prior to his return over the course of last weekend, outspoken Clovis native, Covington recorded a decision shutout victory over former American Top Team stablemate, Masvidal, turning in a dominant win over the Floridian.

And reflecting on his decision success in the immediate aftermath of his loss to Birmingham technician, Edwards, Covington claimed he earned a massive payday in his most recent success.

“I beat him (Jorge Masvidal) up,” Colby Covington said on the PBD podcast. “I gave him the 50-43 with a soda. It was the easiest fight of my career. I can’t believe what they [the UFC] paid me to beat that backstabbing bum up. He’s a backstabber. He’s a guy that as soon as I started rising up in the ranks, that’s when it was an issue.”

“That’s when his ego came in,” Colby Covington explained. “He’s like, No, f*ck you, Colby. I’d fight my mom for money, so I’m for sure gonna fight you. We’re gonna fight one day.’ He just started throwing me under the bus for no reason.”

Colby Covington claims he suffered fractured foot 30 seconds into UFC 296 fight I have pictures on my phone

Off the back of his comprehensive unanimous decision loss to incumbent welterweight best, Leon Edwards at UFC 296 last weekend, former interim titleholder, Colby Covington claims he suffered a fractured foot just 30 seconds into the pairing, as a result of a miscued kick which landed on the Birmingham native’s elbow.

Covington, who headlined UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, made his first Octagon since he landed a one-sided unanimous decision win over arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal in the pair’s long-awaited grudge match.

Failing at his third attempt to mint himself as the undisputed welterweight champion with Saturday’s one-sided judging loss to arch-enemy, Edwards, Covington who was blasted for his derogatory comments on the former’s late father both pre-fight and since post-fight – whom he has since compared to former German dictator, Adolf Hitler.

Colby Covington claims he fractured foot in UFC 296 loss

Claiming his allegiance to former United States President, Donald Trump likely led to a sway against the judges in Edwards’ favor at UFC 296, Covington has now claimed x-ray images will begin to emerge – after he broke his foot just 30 seconds into the first round.

“I broke my foot in like the first 30 seconds of the fight, that people don’t know about yet – the x-rays will start coming out,” Colby Covington said on the PBD podcast. “The first minute of the fight. I have the picture on my phone, the exact moment where it landed on his (Leon Edwards’) elbow.”

“You feel it swelling up,” Colby Covington explained. “At the end of the first round, you’re like man, that hurts. Usually I sit on the stool, and I didn’t want to sit down on the stool. Landed right on the right elbow, the top of the foot.”

Colby Covington blames allegiance to Donald Trump for UFC 296 loss they're stacking the deck against us

Colby Covington claims that his support for former United Saed President Donald Trump impacted the judges decision in his fight against Leon Edwards at UFC 296.

After some personal trash talk at the expense of Edwards, Colby Covington would deliver a flat performance in what was his third attempt at an undisputed title. Rather than taking the loss on the chin and showing even an ounce of humility, Covington instead opted to do what he normally does and blame everyone but himself

Colby Covington using Donald Trump as the latest excuse

Appearing on the conservative Fox News, Covington discussed his loss and claimed the he was at a disadvantage heading into the bout because he was a staunch supporter of Trump.

“I think they stacked the deck against us because they don’t want we the people to have control over this country again,” “That’s what Trump stands for, he stands for democracy, he stands for freedom. They’re going to do everything they can to keep us down from shadow banning us online even if we’re saying the truth.

“They’re going to make us censored,” he continued. “They’re not gong to let the people see that. In any type of athletic or sporting event, they’re going to stack the deck against us.

Who does Covington mean by ‘they’? Is he insinuating that the democratic elites teamed up with the Nevada State athletic Commission to thwart his title chances?

Covington was an elite fighter at one point but considering his talent, his career has been underwhelming. Covington has been plagued with inactivity and when he did fight, it was largely overshadowed by his attempts to take on a professional wrestling type persona.

Now 35, the best of Covington is behind him and with ‘claims’ like this despite MMA having a very large conversative following, is just a little sad.

Tony Ferguson doesn't spar and is missing his opponents after UFC 296 loss UFC star Chael Sonnen

Off the back of his seventh consecutive loss at UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson’s recent downfall in the Octagon may be a direct result of a lack of sparring – according to former title challenger, Chael Sonnen.

Ferguson, a former interim lightweight champion and perennial division contender, featured on the main card of UFC 296 over the course of last weekend in his second appearance of the year, dropping a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Paddy Pimblett.

Tying former two-weight UFC champion, B.J. Penn for the longest concurrent losing skid in the Octagon with his seventh consecutive blemish, Ferguson insisted, however, despite encouragement from Dana White, that he would not consider retiring from mixed martial arts competition.

“Love my fans & supporters you all are f*ckin’ fire,” Tony Ferguson posted on his official Instagram. “Met lots of you tonight, keep the faith MF’s. One foot in front of the other b*tches, remember what I said crew – champ.”

Tony Ferguson brushes off calls for retirement

Insisting he would not be retiring from combat sports – Oxnard veteran, Ferguson claimed those who called for him to do so were just “casuals”, however, a lack of sparring and live-action preparation with other fighters for his bouts, could be the reason for his losing run, according to ex-UFC title challenger, Sonnen.

“Tony Ferguson is the same age as (Stephen) ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson,” Chael Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “Now, when you have a fresh memory in your mind because you just saw them both fight, did they look anything similar?”

“The reason it looked the way that it looked, the reason he (Tony Ferguson) was having a hard time with range, he’s missing his opponent, the reason: he doesn’t spar,” Sonnen explained. (H/T MMA on Point)

Josh Emmett eyes fight with Max Holloway after stunning UFC 296 KO win it would be an honor

Off the back of his hellacious first round KO win over the highly-touted, Bryce Mitchell at UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, former interim featherweight champion, Josh Emmett has staked his claim for a title-eliminator clash with former titleholder, Max Holloway next.

Emmett, the current number six ranked lightweight contender, turned in a shocking victory at UFC 296 last Saturday night in Las Vegas, landing a thunderous opening round KO win over the above-mentioned Ultimate Fighter alum, Mitchell in the pair’s main card opener.

The victory snapped a two-fight losing run for Pheonix veteran, Emmett had been on the wrong side of a decision loss to incoming title chaser, Ilia Topuria earlier this summer, which following a February triangle choke submission loss to Yair Rodríguez in the pair’s interim title fight at UFC 284.

For Holloway, the Hawaiian fan-favorite is currently riding a two-fight winning run – most recently landing a devastating third round KO win over veteran former title challenger Chan Sung Jung at UFC Singapore earlier this summer.

Prior to that, Holloway halted the run of British featherweight, Arnold Allen in a main event clash at UFC Kansas City back in April, and still holds the number one rank in the official featherweight rankings.

Josh Emmett welcomes fight with Max Holloway next

Weighing up his immediate fighting future off the back of his impressive knockout win over Mitchell, Emmett suggested a title-eliminator fight with former champion, Holloway in a return to action.

“He (Max Holloway) is the number one contender,” Josh Emmett told MMA Fighting of a fight with Max Holloway. “He’s cleared out pretty much everyone in the division and fought everyone in the featherweight division but myself.”

“It would be an honor to fight him,” Josh Emmett explained.

Leon Edwards tipped to fight Gilbert Burns instead of Belal Muhammad brings more to the table UFC

Leon Edwards’ head coach, Dave Lovell has claimed he would like to see his student fight former title challenger, Gilbert Burns fight the defending champion next – instead of an earmarked rematch against top-contender, Belal Muhammad, claiming the Brazilian brings more to the table than the latter.

Edwards, who headlined UFC 296 over the course of last weekend, turned in a dominant unanimous decision (49-45, 49-45, 49-45) victory over former interim champion, Colby Covington in the pair’s tense grudge match in Las Vegas.

And in the immediate aftermath, Edwards, who fought the above-mentioned, Muhammad to a second round ‘No Contest’ back in 2021 after an inadvertent eye poke, dismissed a fight with the Illinois native next – despite the fact the surging contender has been billed as the next title challenger.

“Nah, there are definitely other options,” Leon Edwards said after UFC 296. “I don’t feel like Belal (Muhammad) should be next. I’ve done it before. I’ve won like 10 fights and didn’t get a title shot. So, what makes him different or more privileged.”

“So, Colby’s (Covington) already skipped the line already, let’s see who’s next,” Leon Edwards explained. “But like I said, this is the ‘Rocky’ era, it’s my era now and I’ll keep reigning, whoever’s next. It doesn’t matter, they’re all similar styles anyways. All boxers and wrestlers, it’s what I’ve built my career on. So, whoever comes next, it’s whatever, you know.”

Leon Edwards pegged to potentially fight Gilbert Burns next

And according to Edwards’ trainer, Renegade BJJ & MMA staple, Lovell has claimed his student would be better suited to fight Burns next in his return to the Octagon – who most recently suffered a decision shutout loss to Muhammad at UFC 288 back in May.

“If I had a choice who would be next, I would prefer (Gilbert) Burns over Belal (Muhamamd), because I think Burns brings more to the table than Belal,” Dave Lovell told MMA Fighting. “Because Leon’s beaten him [Muhammad] – well, I shouldn’t say that, he had the no-constest against Belal. It looked like, you can’t judge it by the first round totally, but it looked like Leon obviously had the first round locked down with Belal and he was going in for the kill [up tunil] the second until the eye poke occurred.”

“But yeah, if I had a choice, overall, I would like Burns, but we’ll take whoever they [the UFC] throw at us,” Lovell finished.

Booked to make his return to the Octagon at UFC 299 in March of next year, Burns has been slated to fight Australian contender, Jack Della Maddalena in a return to his residence in Miami, Florida.
