Charles Oliveira weighs up Max Holloway rematch after UFC 300 it would be wonderful

Planning a hasty return to action off the back of his close, contentious split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan over the weekend at UFC 300, former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has expressed his interest in a re-run with newly-minted BMF titleholder, Max Holloway in the future.

Oliveira, a former undisputed lightweight kingpin, who slipped to number two in the official lightweight pile over the course of the weekend, found himself on the wrong side of a close, debated split judging (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) defeat to Armenia native, Tsarukyan failed to lock up a slew of close submission attempts in each round.

And arguing his case for a potential victory on the judge’s scorecards against the newly-ranked number one contender, Oliveira claimed that his active in hunting for submissions should likely have gotten him the nod in a close back-and-forth.

“I had to finish him,” Charles Oliveira explained during an interview with Canal Encarada. “It went to the judges, and it’s their call, there’s nothing we can do. If you go back tot the first round, you’ll see I tired to finish him more and they scored it for me. The second one was closer and I ended up with a triangle choke locked in, and they gave it to him. The third, he was on top, holding me there, but wasn’t doing Jiu-Jitsu or anything, and I finished with a choke locked in, and they still have it to him. There’s not much we can do.”

And in terms of an ideal return time – it’s as soon as possible according to Sao Paulo finisher, Oliveira, who also noted his interest in sharing the Octagon with the above-mentioned, Holloway in the future – who himself turned in a viral, buzzer-beating KO win over common-foe, Justin Gaethje.

Charles Oliveira weighs up Max Holloway rematch

“We don’t need to get desperate,” Charles Oliveira explained. “I want to come back as soon as possible. Of course, a fight with Max Holloway would be wonderful, but he will definitely go back to his weight class to fight for the 145 [pound] title. Justin Gaethje hurt his nose, so we have to think.”

First fighting Holloway atop a UFC Fight Night Saskatoon main event back in 2015, Oliveira saw a four-fight unbeaten streak come to an end in unique circumstances, suffering a first round TKO loss after he injured his esophagus during a scramble at the Octagon fence.

Bo Nickal confident he would 'Ragdoll' Khamzat Chimaev in potential middleweight clash

Bo Nickal can’t see Khamzat Chimaev hanging with him inside the Octagon — especially in a five-round fight.

Making his third appearance for the promotion at UFC 300, Nickal was dragged beyond the first round for the first time in his career. Still, the result was the same as the three-time NCAA Division I National Champion dispatched his opponent, Cody Brundage, via rear-naked choke in the latter half of the second stanza.

Sitting at 6-0 in his mixed martial arts career, it’ll be a while before we see Nickal squaring off with anyone sniffing around the middleweight top 10, but that won’t stop the former Nittany Lion from looking ahead. Particularly when it comes to the undefeated Chechen monster, Khamzat Chimaev.

Khamzat Chimaev

Nickal has had his sights set on a scrap with ‘Borz’ since scoring his contract on Dana White’s Contender Series. Perhaps one day we’ll see how that plays out. For now, we’ll just have to live with Nickal’s prediction of how things could potentially play out between the two world-class wrestlers.

“I think I would do similarly to him what I did to this last guy,” Nickal said during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani “[I would] take him down, ragdoll him, throw him around. He’s not a big 85er, he gets tired. Is his first round gonna be a little more competitive? Probably, but if that fight is five rounds I don’t think he makes it five rounds.

“Will it be tough in the beginning? Is he gonna come at it? Absolutely, but I don’t think he’s going to be able to hurt me or do anything that inflicts so much damage that I’m not going to be able to widen the gap on him as the fight continues.”

Khamzat Chimaev meets Robert Whittaker in a high-stakes scrap in Saudi Arabia

Currently, Khamzat Chimaev is gearing up for what will be the biggest test of his career thus far. Returning to the Octagon on Saturday, June 22, ‘Borz’ will headline the UFC’s debut in Saudi Arabia, squaring off with former middleweight titleholder Robert Whittaker.

After kickstarting his UFC career with three wins in eight weeks, Chimaev’s appearances have been few and far between. He last fought at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi where he earned a majority decision over short-notice opponent Kamaru Usman. The victory came more than a year removed from his UFC 279 debacle that saw him go from fighting Nate Diaz to competing against Kevin Holland in the span of 24 hours.

Chael Sonnen suggests Herb Dean’s interference could be to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss at UFC 300

Is Herb Dean to blame for Jamahal Hill’s loss to Alex Pereira?

Chael Sonnen seems to think so.

Closing out a spectacular night of fights at UFC 300, ‘Poatan’ successfully defended his light heavyweight title in the evening’s landmark main event, putting ‘Sweet Dreams’ to sleep with a booming left uppercut just past the three-minute mark.

While pundits have been focusing on Pereira’s knockout blow and his viral post-fight celebration, the three-time UFC title challenger noticed something nobody else has pointed out.

“I kept watching it and I finally saw something that I had never looked for,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel. “I watched Herb Dean, then I looked back and I watched Alex, but what I never looked for is what Jamahal did. Have you? Because Pereira holds and hand up and even says something to Herb. ‘Stay back, I’m good.’

“That was great communication. Herb was going to break the action to check on him. Everybody is doing what they’re supposed to be, but Jamahal stops. Not 100%. I’m not saying he put it in park and got out, but he stops. He stopped doing what he was doing and started doing something else.”

Alex Pereira calls off Herb Dean at UFC 300

“You’ve never seen a referee step in and a fighter tell him to get back,” Sonnen continued. “If the ref comes in after you know you just kicked the guy low, you’re going to have a break in the action. So, Jamahal begins that break in the action, when Herb gets notified and makes the decision that he’s going to get out of [the way]. …As [Jamahal] turns his head, Alex took the angle. This has never been spoke of.”

Jamahal Hills calls for a fight with jiri prochazka

Issuing his first statement following the loss, Jamahal Hill offered no excuses for the loss.

“Oh well, that’s the game we play,” Hill said in a video on social media. “Got caught. For anybody that cares, I’m good. I’m well.”

Looking to jump right back into the fire, ‘Sweet Dreams’ called for a clash with former 205-pound champ Jiri Prochazka.

“I dared to be great against adversity and against a great challenge and came up short at the highest level in the world!!!” Hill later wrote on X. “I answered the call twice on short notice to fight for a championship that most will never fight for!!! On to the next, [Ji?í Procházka let’s] make it happen!!”

Competing in the featured prelim of UFC 300, Prochazka put away Aleksandar Rakic emphatically, re-establishing himself as one of the light heavyweight division’s top contenders.

Ilia Topuria demands Max Holloway put his BMF belt on the line in proposed featherweight title fight

If it’s not for the BMF title, Ilia Topuria has no interest in fighting Max Holloway.

‘Blessed’ delivered one of the greatest knockouts in UFC history at the promotion’s landmark event in Las Vegas over the weekend, dispatching lightweight fan favorite Justin Gaethje with a booming overhand right to claim the bragging rights belt.

Max Holloway KOs Justin Gaethje

Needless to say, Holloway’s insane buzzer-beater sent the 20,000 fans inside T-Mobile Arena into an absolute frenzy. Well, everyone except Topuria who looked like he’d just seen a ghost who introduced him to his future.

Ilia Topuria reacts to Holloway's KO

Immediately following the victory, fans flocked to social media demanding that Max Holloway be the first man to challenge Ilia Topuria for the featherweight title.

During an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Topuria was open to the idea of fighting Holloway — a complete 180 from where he stood two months ago — but only on the condition that ‘Blessed’ puts his new belt up for grabs.

“Without the BMF belt [on the line], I don’t want him at all,” Topuria said. “If not, I’m gonna fight with Volk who deserves more than him, the rematch. Because he has that belt, I’m excited about that. That’s why I want him.

“He’s been saying, ‘Right now I have a lot of options.’ He doesn’t have any options. I’m the champion right now, I choose the date, I choose the place. He just has to be ready and wait for the call. Whenever I want him, he has to be ready.”

A chance to win the BMF title has Ilia Topuria Changing his tune

Sitting on a perfect 15-0 record in MMA, ‘El Matador’ is only eight weeks removed from his stunning second-round knockout of Alexander Volkanvoski to claim the 145-pound crown at UFC 298. Even before winning the title, Topuria made it clear that he would “never” defend the belt against some of the division’s biggest names.

“Max, Yair (Rodriguez), Brian Ortega, all of them, they can go and retire. I’m never going to give them the chance to fight for the title – never,” he said in a prior interview with Helwani.

With something more to gain, it appears that Ilia Topuria has reversed his statement — at least when it comes to Holloway.

Chael Sonnen unsure about UFC Hall of Fame induction for Anderson Silva fight one of my worst moments

Chael Sonnen says his UFC Hall of Fame induction was a little bit weird for him.

Sonnen’s first fight against Anderson Silva was inducted into the Hall of Fame as it entered the fight wing. The middleweight title fight was one of the best fights as Sonnen was dominating Silva and was well on his way to winning but caught in a submission in the fifth round.

Chael Sonnen

Chael Sonnen unsure about UFC HOF induction

For that fight to be going into the Hall of Fame makes it a little weird for Sonnen, as he says that was one of the worst moments of his career.

“I gotta tell you, I’ve never felt good about a loss,” Chael Sonnen said of his Hall of Fame induction on Good Guy / Bad Guy. (via MMAMania). Nothing’s changed in my life. Like, I didn’t wake up and all of a sudden they reversed the decision, or I wake up, and I got a rematch and I beat him. I got some praise, and I must tell you it feels very good to get a pat on the back. I mean, one of the worst moments. One that’s kept me up at night is now the one that keeps me up from excitement. I lost, and that’s a little bit weird, but here I am.”

Although it was a little weird, Chael Sonnen says he didn’t even realize he was going into the Hall of Fame which made the moment more special.

“I’ve got to tell you, that thing was so fun,” Sonnen said. “I never really envisioned this and Glenn Jacobs helped us set up. I had no idea until that came out of Jon Anik’s mouth. Even when he said it he didn’t say my name, he said ‘The Bad Guy,’ and I sat there, and I thought, ‘Well, they used to call me the bad guy.’ I had one of those moments. It was just fun, man. It was just exciting… It was very cool, and I was very grateful.”

Who are the 2024 UFC Hall of Fame inductees?

After the Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva fight was inducted into the Hall of Fame, the class of 2024 appears to be set.

The 2024 UFC Hall of Fame class will feature Frankie Edgar, Wanderlei Silva, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, and Sonnen vs. Silva 1.

The Hall of Fame class features some very well-deserving fighters who helped raise the profile of the UFC.

Charles Oliveira believed he choked out Arman Tsarukyan with D'Arce at UFC 300 I thought he went out

Suffering a close, split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) loss to Arman Tsarukyan on the main card of UFC 300 last weekend, former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira claims he was convinced the Armenian was out cold late into the fight, courtesy of his D’Arce choke.

Oliveira, a former undisputed lightweight titleholder, slumped to number two in the official lightweight pile off the back of his judging loss to Tsarukyan at UFC 300 – with the former replacing him atop the tree at 155 pounds.

Dropping a close, debated decision loss to the American Top Team staple, Oliveira admitted he went very close with a trio of submissions in each of his three rounds against Tsarukyan – struggling with a first round guillotine, a late second frame triangle armbar from his back, and a notable D’Arce choke in the dying embers of the last round.

And according to him, Oliveira revealed that as far as he thought, Tsarukyan had been choked unconscious during the D’Arce attempt, with the Armenian contender defending by starfishing and bellying out from the bottom before the klaxon sounded.

Charles Oliveira argues for decision win at UFC 300

Arguing his case for a win due to his activity and search for numerous submissions, Oliveira admitted he thought that he had choked out Tsarukyan before the end of the final round.

“30 seconds [left in the fight], it was tight, one of the submissions I like the most, D’Arce choke,” Charles Oliveira told Canal Encarada during a recent interview. “I thought he (Arman Tsarukyan) went out, that’s why I had my tongue out, joking, you know? But I don’t know, it’s part of the game.”

“I had to finish him,” Charles Oliveira explained. “It went to the judges, and it’s their call, there’s nothing we can do.
