Sage Northcutt Considering Weight Class Change After UFC Boise Win

Sage Northcutt is already considering moving to a different weight class even though he won his latest fight.

As seen in the co-main event of the main card of Saturday’s (July 15, 2018) UFC Boise (also known as UFC Fight Night 133) at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, the rising prospect was able to secure a TKO win over over the always tough Zak Ottow.

Northcutt bulked up for this fight as it was contested at welterweight, which is not his normal weight class even though he’s fought at 170 pounds a few times during his tenure with the Las Vegas-based promotion but now he is already entertaining the idea of fighting at middleweight.

This fight didn’t go as originally planned for Northcutt as he had a tough first round once he got floored with a punch early in the fight and landed shots from top position but fear not fight fans, he claims that he is used to it as he would later say that it wasn’t worse than what he receives from former title contender Urijah Faber while training for his fights.

“Who knows?” Northcutt said backstage to MMAJunkie. “If you look at my brother, my brother’s like (6-foot-4), and he’s only 19 years old. So I hope I’m as tall as him. I might be 6-5. I could be 220, 230 pounds. I have no idea. My mom’s dad was 6-5. I could be fighting at 185 in the future. But first, 170.”

“I’m at his gym all the time,” Northcutt said. “I’m learning the sequences, the techniques, everything. Now, fighting at my natural weight and grow into that weight class, it will be even better.”

Even though he came out on top, it was still a gamble for Northcutt to take this fight as he was riding a two fight winning streak while competing in the lightweight division and in his previous welterweight fights, it ended in him losing but as a result of having a full training camp home at Team Alpha Male under the learning tree of Faber, he knew at the end of the day that it was the right move.

Junior Dos Santos has his sights set on redemption as he wants a fight with Stipe Miocic.

As seen in the main event of the main card of Saturday’s (July 15, 2018) UFC Boise (also known as UFC Fight Night 133) at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, the former UFC heavyweight champion was able to pick up a unanimous decision win over Blagoy Ivanov.

In the fight, Dos Santos landed more strikes over the five rounds to take home the win on the judges’ scorecards, which put another W in the win column for the future UFC Hall of Famer. This was a big win for him for two reasons – his first win since suffering a knockout loss to Miocic in May of 2017 as that was his previous fight and the fact that this was his first fight in over one year.

JDS had been on the sidelines since he was flagged for a potential USADA anti-doping violation back in August of 2017 and as a result of that violation, he was forced out of his UFC 215 barnburner against hard-hitting and former title contender Francis Ngannou.

After the news came out, Dos Santos’ team clarified the situation by revealing he had tested positive for the diuretic Hydrochlorothiazide in the August 10 out-of-competition test.

Following the fight, JDS made it known that he wants another shot at the former UFC heavyweight champion.

“Everything negative goes away when you get the ‘W,’” Dos Santos said to MMAJunkie. “That would be a good fight, and I want that because I think we deserve it, both of us. Miocic was the champion that just lost the championship with one punch,” Dos Santos said. “That’s the heavyweight division. Sometimes, when you connect right on your (chin), you’re done.

“We’re going to have to wait a little bit now, because Brock Lesnar and Daniel Cormier will fight. We could do this fight, and maybe the winner will fight for the title.”

If you recall, JDS and Miocic have fought each other twice inside of the Octagon as their first fight came four years in a barnburner that saw Dos Santos pick up a unanimous decision win but it will be interesting to see if the UFC books this fight again due to the fact that Miocic will likely be on the sidelines for some time after suffering a KO loss to now-UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier earlier this month at the UFC 226 pay-per-view event.

Chad Mendes Believes He Should Be Ranked High In Featherweight Division After Latest Win

Chad Mendes returned in a big way to the Octagon after being out of action.

The reason for Mendes’ inactivity was due to a failed drug test because if you recall, back in July of 2016, USADA announced that Mendes had received a two-year sanction for an anti-doping policy violation after testing positive for a prohibited substance.

He tested positive for GHRP-6 (Growth Hormone-Releasing Hexapeptide) following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on May 17, 2016 and before this weekend, he was last seen in the Octagon when competed against Frankie Edgar at the TUF 22 Finale.

As seen on the main card of Saturday’s (July 15, 2018) UFC Boise (also known as UFC Fight Night 133) at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, Mendes scored a TKO win over Myles Jury in a featherweight showdown in the first round.

Following the fight, Mendes made it known that he believes that the UFC should rank him top 3 in the featherweight division as a result of this win and also discussed a potential fight with Alex Volkanovski, who earned a dominant win over Mendes’ Team Alpha Male teammate, Darren Elkins at this event.

“I think I left at No. 2 or No. 3 – put me back in there,” Mendes told MMAjunkie post-fight. “That’s where I belong. There’s some newer guys moving into the division, but I feel like I match up with these guys. My athleticism, my power, my speed, my wrestling back. I think it’s just going to be too much for these guys to handle. I feel confident going against any of these dudes. Put me right back where I was.”

“That guy’s not even ranked,” Mendes said. “That doesn’t make sense for me. He did just beat a teammate. If they put him high enough in the rankings, I’d love to knock that dude out. … It’s up to the UFC. That was a quick fight for me, and if they want to give me something in a few months or towards the end of the year, I think my managers are going to negotiate with them soon. We’ll see what they think. I’m game for anything.”

“That felt good,” Mendes said. “I’m on Cloud 9 right now. Just being able to go out there and get a finish like that in an environment like that, with so many friends and family in the crowd, is just unbelievable. This is what I kill myself day in and day out for – getting a finish like that.”

Mendes looked great in this fight and didn’t take much damage, which would make some fight fans believe that with him being on the sidelines for such a long period of time, he would want to return to the Octagon for his next fight sooner rather than later. With all of that being said, it should be interesting to see who the UFC books him against next.
