LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Vegas 19: Blaydes vs. Lewis results throughout the afternoon (Sun. 20th. February 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rescheduled for tonight’s main event, heavyweight contenders, Curtis Blaydes and Derrick Lewis finally square off following the cancellation of their first attempted pairing back in November at UFC Vegas 15 amid a positive COVID-19 test result from the former.

Hoping to continue on his quest to his premier promotional title challenge, Lewis, like Blaydes headlines his second event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas — following his June unanimous decision victory over the recent feature, Alexander Volkov.

For New Orleans favourite, Lewis, a victory over the #2 ranked Blaydes would surely guarantee him his second title challenge under the UFC’s banner. Featuring in August of last year in a main event slot against common-foe, Aleksei Olienik, Lewis became the most prolific knockout artist in the history of the UFC’s heavyweight division, notching his eleventh stoppage via strikes.

In a co-main event matchup, Brazilian striker, Ketlen Vieira is rebooked to match with former Invicta FC bantamweight champion and one-time UFC featherweight title challenger, Yana Kunitskaya. Tipping the bantamweight scales at yesterday’s weigh-ins, Vieira was fined twenty percent of her fight purse, with the matchup proceeding at a 138-pound catchweight limit.

Manaus native, Vieira returned to the Octagon following her first promotional loss back in December of 2019 — taking a unanimous decision victory over Sijara Eubanks at UFC 252 last September.

Also returning to the win-column following a knockout loss of her own, Kunitskaya managed a unanimous judging win of her own against Julija Stoliarenko at UFC Vegas 6 in August.

With the withdrawal of streaking prospect, Khamzat Chimaev due to lingering health issues amid a positive COVID-19 test result, the #3 ranked Leon Edwards is set to remain on the UFC Vegas 21 card — drawing recent UFC 258 victor, Belal Muhammad in a reworked main event on March 13.

Forced from two outings against Edwards this year already, Chimaev, who is expected to travel to Las Vegas to receive treatment and medicine for his lingering lung issues — was slated to match with the Birmingham native at UFC Fight Island 7 in January, but failed to gain medical clearance to compete or prepare for the fight.

Yet to feature since UFC Fight Night San Antonio in July of 2019 — Edwards notched his eighth consecutive triumph via a unanimous decision win over former lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos. Scheduled to headline a UFC Fight Night London card last March, the entire event was shelved amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, scrapping his tie with former champion, Tyron Woodley.

The victor of four on the trot, 32-year-old contender, Muhammad earned the #13 rank at 170-pounds via a one-sided unanimous judging win over Dhiego Lima last Saturday night at UFC 258 at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. News of the matchup was first penned by ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto

On the cusp of a title shot at welterweight, Team Renegade BJJ & MMA staple, Edwards is undefeated in the UFC since December of 2015 — where he dropped a UFC Fight Night Orlando unanimous decision to current champion, Kamaru Usman.

Scoring eight victories since, the 29-year-old scored wins over Dominic Waters, Albert Tumenov, Vicente Luque, Bryan Barberena, Peter Sobotta, Donald Cerrone, and Gunnar Nelson, prior to his judging win over the above mentioned former 155-pound kingpin, dos Anjos.

Enjoying a certain purple-patch of form, Muhammad scores his first headlining bout under the UFC’s banner — hoping to notch his fifth straight success and knock back the streaking, Edwards.

A five-year, twelve-fight Octagon veteran, the Illinois native has amassed a 9-3 promotional résumé — dropping losses to common-foe, Luque, kickboxing talent, Geoff Neal, and Alan Jouban. As part of his current streak, Muhammad has bested Curtis Millender, Takashi Sato, Lyman Good, and the aforenoted, Lima.

Edwards was initially linked with a title-eliminator against former interim titleholder, Colby Covington, however, the brash Californian put and end to those talks — claiming he wouldn’t do charity by accepting a short-notice bout against the #3 ranked contender.

Paulo Costa Rejects Rescheduling Against Robert Whittaker, Clash Still Set For April 17

CostaDespite reported plans to field a middleweight headliner between former champion Robert Whittaker and most recent title chaser, Paulo Costa a week prior at an April 10 event — the latter has rejected that proposal, with the matchup still scheduled to headline an April 17 event.  Scheduled to make his Octagon return at the April […]

Despite reported plans to field a middleweight headliner between former champion Robert Whittaker and most recent title chaser, Paulo Costa a week prior at an April 10 event — the latter has rejected that proposal, with the matchup still scheduled to headline an April 17 event

Scheduled to make his Octagon return at the April 17 event against former champion, Robert Whittaker in a potential title-eliminator — the pairing follows what promises to be an important month for the 185-pound division, with a headliner between Darren Till and Marvin Vettori slated for the April 10 event.

According to a report from MMA Fighting reporter, Guilherme Cruz, the promotion had attempted to rebooked Whittaker vs. Costa a week prior at the April 10 event, however, the Brazilian’s side rejected that proposal, with the bout now remaining on the April 17 card.

Hoping to potentially earn rematches against incumbent middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya as he attempts to add the light heavyweight title to his trophy cabinet at UFC 259 — both Whittaker and Costa have dropped second round knockout defeats to the Kiwi-Nigerian striker.

Headlining UFC Fight Island 3 in July, Whittaker met with the above mentioned former welterweight title chaser, Till, defeating the Liverpool striker over the course of five frames in a close back-and-forth unanimous decision win.

Taking co-main event honours beneath a lightweight title unification clash of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October, Whittaker again prevailed in a unanimous decision showing, knocking back the streaking, Jared Cannonier in a rescheduled matchup.

Undefeated in his first five Octagon outings prior to his one-sided second round knockout loss to rival, Adesanya in Abu Dhabi, UAE — Brazilian powerhouse Costa had overcome some notable division names. Besting multiple-time title chaser and upcoming Bellator debutante, Yoel Romero in a close decision win — the Belo Horizonte native bested Uriah Hall, Johny Hendricks, Oluwale Bamgbose, and Gareth McLellan to boot.

As of writing, it’s currently unknown where the organization plan to field those pair of April 10 and April 18 Fight Night events, with their March scheduled which finishes with a UFC 260 double-header of title fights scheduled to land at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Following his unanimous decision return to the winner-enclosure at UFC 258 on Saturday, one-time interim middleweight championship challenger, Kelvin Gastelum noted his interest in serving as a short-notice backup for either once scheduled foe, Whittaker or Costa if the UFC required his services.

The UFC Attempting To Book Colby Covington vs. Leon Edwards Next

CovingtonWell, it seems all may not be lost for perennial UFC welterweight contender, Leon Edwards. Well, it seems all may not be lost for perennial UFC welterweight contender, Leon Edwards. Seeing his UFC Vegas 21 matchup against Khamzat Chimaev fall to the wayside yet again, the Birmingham native may be lined up for a short-notice replacement, in an even higher-profile pairing.

Speaking with media ahead of UFC 258 this weekend at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada — UFC president, Dana White detailed how the organization are currently attempting to put together a potential title-eliminator tie between former interim gold holder, Colby Covington and the above mentioned, Edwards.

Whilst hopeful of seeing Covington draft in on the original March 13th. Fight Night date, White remained optimistic, although noted the matchup may have to be pushed back further — with talks still at a preliminary stage as of writing.

Forced to withdraw from a matchup with Edwards, captivating AllStars force, Chimaev is still dealing with lingering health issues stemming from a positive COVID-19 test late last year, which forced him from a UFC Fight Island 7 headliner with Edwards in January.

Failing to feature despite his best efforts since UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in July of 2019 — Edwards was forced to withdraw from a UFC Vegas 17 matchup with the #15 ranked Chimaev following a particularly debilitating COVID-19 contraction of his own.

Taking headlining honours at the AT&T Center main event in Texas, Edwards took home a unanimous decision win over one-time undisputed lightweight gold holder, Rafael dos Anjos — notching his eight consecutive victory following his 2015 loss to current champion, Kamaru Usman.

Forever linked with a matchup against former friend and American Top Team teammate, Jorge Masvidal, Covington seems to be on the brink of a return himself, just not against the Floridian.

Rebounding from his UFC 245 title tilt loss to rival Usman back in December of 2019, Covington dropped a fifth-round knockout defeat in an instant classic title fight. Returning at UFC Vegas 11 in September, Covington took on former champion, Tyron Woodley in another grudge-match — overcoming the St. Louis native in the fifth round via a rib injury after a one-sided display for the prior four frames.

Whilst the promotion have yet to officially book Covington and Edwards in a sure to be anticipated matchup, it’s clear the organization look to restore some order to the division and offer the duo a clear path to either respective rematches against Usman, or this weekend’s challenger, Gilbert Burns if he emerges victorious.

Alexander Volkov Bloodies Alistair Overeem Before Second Round Knockout – UFC Vegas 18 Highlights

Volkov

Alexander ‘Drago’ Volkov is firmly on the cusp of title contention via a precise, second round beating of the veteran former Dream, K-1, and Strikeforce champion, Alistair ‘The Demolition Man’ Overeem — earning him his second straight victory.

To open the first frame, Volkov backs Overeem up against the fence as expected with the latter hoping to land with a couple of counter overhand lefts of his own, as the Russian fires off some kicks. Countering Overeem, it seemed the Duthcman slipped as Volkov followed him to the canvas for a brief exchange. Shelling up as usual recently, Overeem ate some shots at the fence before the end of the first round.

Measuring Overeem with some massive right hands in the second, Volkov began bloodying the veteran significantly. Landing another punishing right hand and then a left hook, Volkov dropped Overeem who turned away from more offence, with referee, Jason Herzog waving the fight off. Two wins on the trot for Alexander Volkov — this one arguably the most high-profile of his career to date.

Below, check out the highlights from Volkov’s composed finish over the iconic, Overeem
