While last weekend’s (Sat., October 21, 2017) UFC Fight Night 118 from the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, may have been short on overall mixed martial arts (MMA) star power, it did feature the rise of up-and-coming star Darren Till, who demolished longtime contender Donald Cerrone in the main event.

The brash British talent not surprisingly came into the bout as a large underdog, but proved the oddsmakers wrong when he blitzed Cerrone with a vicious fight-ending combination at the end of the first round.

With the shocking win, Till bulldozed his way onto the new official UFC rankings, landing at No. 9 on the current list from UFC.com. With his third straight loss, Cerrone dropped three spots to No. 9, allowing Carlos Condit and Colby Covington to rise up to the Nos. 6 and 7 spots, respectively.

Both Condit and Covington are booked to fight in the coming weeks, with Covington taking on longtime rankings mainstay Demian Maia in the co-main event of this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 119 from Sao Paulo, while Condit meets Neil Magny at December’s UFC 219.

With Stephen Thompson facing Jorge Masvidal t November 4’s UFC 217 and top-ranked Robbie Lawler meeting No. 5 Rafael dos Anjos at UFC on FOX 26, the welterweight division is suddenly the most buzzing and active division in the UFC – and that will certainly provide multiple opponents for the rising Till when he returns.

Although yesterday’s (Sat., October 21, 2017) UFC Fight Night 118 from the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, may have been short on palpable buzz, the card did feature some antics from UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

‘The Notorious’ appeared cageside to root for friend and training partner Artem Lobov, who met Andre Fili in the feature prelim bout in Gdansk. His tutelage could be heard from afar, and the brash Irish champ became even more animated by approaching the cage to give his instruction.

That was when referee Marc Goddard scolded McGregor by firmly telling him, “What’s gotten into you, Conor? Be professional.” He stepped back and settled himself as Lobov ultimately lost to Fili by decision. The day after, Goddard told MMA Fighting ‘The Notorious’ was essentially acting as a fourth cornerman and could have influenced the fight’s outcome:

“The reason I interjected is because Artem gets a fourth cornerman cage side giving instruction. That’s not allowed. Imagine had Conor talked him through a fight-ending sequence. Then what?

“Conor was basically acting like a fourth cornerman. Walking around the cage side wherever and whenever he wanted. When Fili took down Artem, Conor was right there. That’s simply not fair and not allowed. I won’t have it. He can’t do as he pleases.”

Goddard remained firm in his stance, clarifying that McGregor could have yelled as loudly as he wanted until he approached the cage. In his eyes, what he did was unfair, so Goddard made a steadfast call quickly to uphold the integrity of the match-up:

“If Conor had stood up, stayed at his seat, then he could have shouted till his hearts content. That’s what he’s supposed to do. But what he simply cannot do, what he is not allowed to do, is approach the cage at any point and as I say act as the fourth corner. That’s unfair and unjust. Anyone who knows me will tell you I’ve done this forever, in any country in any situation. My integrity is not wavered and neither is the rules. We can’t allow that. I simply had to act.”

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor may not have a fight lined up inside the Octagon just yet, but he did make an appearance at yesterday’s UFC Gdansk event to support teammate Artem Lobov.

McGregor was cageside throughout the entire fight, shouting advice “The Russian Hammer’s” way so loudly to the point that referee Marc Goddard had to pause the action and address the Irishman by asking him “What’s gotten into you, Conor? Be professional.”

“The Notorious One’s” fellow SBG Ireland teammate was going toe-to-toe with Team Alpha Male’s Andre Fili, who would go on to defeat Lobov via unanimous decision. It was such a devastating loss for the Russian that he even took to Twitter to contemplate retirement after the event’s conclusion.

On their way back to the locker room area, video surfaced of McGregor consoling Lobov as they walked together, and it appeared as though the audio may have picked up McGregor making a few homophobic slurs towards Fili.

While it may sound like McGregor called Fili a f****t in the video and the UFC subsequently deleted all of their videos containing the supposed slur, McGregor has actually been a proponent for same-sex marriage in his native Ireland.

He was a vocal supporter of it being passed in his home country two years ago, voicing that support with the following quote (via MMA Fighting):

“We all deserve equal rights. We’re all human here at the end of the day — regardless of color, gender, sexuality. Any of that. It’s all meaningless. We all deserve the same rights. It just feels right to me.”

His Straight Blast Gym (SBG) also tweeted out support for the measure:

But regardless of McGregor’s past support, if he did indeed use the slur, it’s not the best look for the UFC considering former heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum used the slur several times in a public scuffle with interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson at a UFC 216 media event this month. McGregor has also been accused of being less than sensitive in the past, gaining criticism for supposedly being racist towards Floyd Mayweather in the over-the-top promotional world tour for their boxing match in August.

During the promotional events, McGregor told Mayweather to “dance for me, boy,” and said he was black “from the bellybutton down,” while gyrating his hips for his “beautiful black fans.” While there will always be a certain amount of off-color remarks from MMA’s most infamous trash talker, some believe his smack talk is beginning to blur the lines of pure disrespect, while others think those offended by it are being too sensitive.

Darren Till shocked the mixed martial arts (MMA) world earlier today (Sat., October 21, 2017) when he put down longtime UFC veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in the first round of their match-up in the main event of UFC Gdansk.

Till came into the fight with an unbeaten record, having won nine of his 15 career wins via knockout and two via submission. “The Gorilla” was able to put the pressure on “Cowboy” early, neutralize his takedown attempts, and pour on a barrage of punches that would force the referee to call the fight off.

In his post-fight interview, Till doubled down on a callout he has been making for the past several weeks – fellow up-and-coming welterweight star “Platinum” Mike Perry. Perry was in attendance for the fight and jumped up onto the Octagon outside the cage and the pair exchanged words. It was quite the sight to see and laid the groundwork for what could perhaps be one of the best fights of the year if indeed made.

“Platinum” first needs to get past upcoming opponent Santiago Ponzinibio when they collide at UFC on FOX 26 on December 16, 2017, from the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Canada, however.

Unbeaten British welterweight Darren Till had a golden opportunity to burst onto the UFC welterweight ranks when he fought longtime contender Donald Cerrone in the main event of today’s (Sat., October 21, 2017) UFC Fight Night 118 from the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, but not many were giving him a shot against the feared veteran.

However, Till did exactly what he predicted in the lead-up to the fight and dominated Cerrone from the opening bell (at least for a long as the fight lasted), blasting him with a vicious shot early followed by a stinging elbow that opened the floodgates for a brutal onslaught of ground shots that left referee Marc Goddard with no choice but to call the bout in the first round.

Till looked huge and overpowering, truly appearing to be the size of a middleweight, and it seemed like ‘Cowboy,’ who is now beginning to show the wear and tear of being perhaps the most active fighter in UFC history, was never truly in the fight at any point against the larger and younger “Gorilla.” The future looks extremely bright for the brash Brit all of the sudden, and he called out fellow surging young competitor Mike “Platinum” Perry in his post-fight interview.

There will be many match-ups discussed for Till in the stacked welterweight division in the coming weeks, and they should all present new and exciting bouts.

Unbeaten British prospect Darren Till bulldozed his way onto the rankings by destroying longtime veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone with a first-round TKO in the main event following a huge punch and elbow on the feet that had Cerrone turtling up early. It was a quick, shocking victory that will represent a changing of the guard at welterweight.

In other action, former women’s strawweight contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz got back into the win column with a unanimous decision win over Jodie Esquibel in the co-main event.
