After knocking out Robbie Lawler at July 30’s UFC 201 to become the undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley seemed more interested in ‘money fights’ with Georges St. Pierre and Nick Diaz rather than a fight with the rightful No. 1-contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, who called out Woodley for a fight later this year in New York.

Well, it appears as if one of these two men got their wish, and it wasn’t the champion.

FOX Sports’ Damon Martin reported earlier today (September 16, 2016) that Woodley vs. Thompson has been set for November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden:

Woodley also confirmed the news on the UFC Fight Night 94 weigh-ins show.

Prior to knocking out Lawler, Woodley had picked up back-to-back victories over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum.

“Wonderboy”, on the other hand, has been on absolute tear as of late, winning seven straight bouts including four by way of finish. His most recent victories came in dominant fashion over former champion Johny Hendricks last February and longtime top contender Rory MacDonald this past June.

Woodley will be looking to make the first defense of his title in this bout, but the fight likely won’t be the only title fight on the card.

A lightweight title clash between reigning champion Eddie Alvarez and 145-pound king Conor McGregor has been rumored as a possible headliner, but the fight is currently not a done deal.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and lightweight king Eddie Alvarez are heading for a UFC 205 clash in November. In many ways this 155-pound championship clash will represent the new age of the UFC. Super fights are not unheard of in the UFC, but are extremely rare. In the UFC’s modern era there’s been only one; BJ Penn vs. Georges St-Pierre. Penn, the lightweight champ of the time, had already fought and lost against ‘GSP.’ The welterweight strap was on the line at UFC 94, and the Canadian champ defended it with a decision win.

There have been a few much-anticipated super fights booked over the years, but none have come to fruition. Jose Aldo was meant to fight Anthony Pettis while they were 145 and 155-pound champs respectively. That fight fell apart due to injury. The difference between these fights and the heavily reported McGregor vs. Alvarez clash is arguably the money aspect. You could argue that pay-per-view and crowd revenue has always been the motivation for any big fight, but never before has this factor been so apparent and flaunted.

Red Panty Night

The hilarious statement made by Conor McGregor about Rafael dos Anjos at the GO BIG presser is somewhat poignant now. Champions are starting to stray away from the rankings on a frequent basis-why? The cash involved in the big name fights. CM Punk’s UFC debut made the ex-WWE star $500K, while his opponent Mickey Gall made $30K. Those figures don’t even need expanding on, they simply support this argument further.

Tyron Woodley wants GSP, Dominick Cruz wants McGregor, and even Demetrious Johnson is talking about a superfight now. Where this whole saga could get extremely interesting is if McGregor defeats Alvarez. The question of the Irishman’s featherweight title remains unanswered. Although UFC president Dana White said ‘The Notorious’ would have to vacate to fight at UFC 205 at 155 pounds, nothing is certain until it’s done and dusted.

New York, New York

Another major part of the UFC coming in to their new era is the debut of the promotion in New York. For years the UFC battled narrow-minded and corrupt senators in the state, finally cutting the ribbon to the Big Apple earlier this year. It’s almost poetic that the first superfight in more than seven years would mark promotion’s first trip to NYC. What are the ramifications of a victory for McGregor though, or Alvarez for that matter?

It’s a win-win situation for the Irish star, perhaps even more so if he’s able to keep his featherweight title in the meantime. In terms of money it’ll be great for both men, but arguably ‘The Silent Assassin’ has a lot more on the line. Only the lightweight belt will be up for grabs, putting the ball firmly in Alvarez’s court.

Future

As the rankings slide further in to obscurity, the dollar sign reveals itself as king. Fuelling that green throne is Conor McGregor, who ushers in the new age of money fights. One huge and rather intriguing question-who takes over after ‘The Notorious’ is gone? Ronda Rousey is arguably up there in terms of PPV draws, but these kinds of stars are few and far between. Will the focus shift back from money and to rankings, or is this more than just a flavor of the month?

It was recently rumored that a potential welterweight clash between former champion Robbie Lawler and former lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone was in the works for November 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden. It now appears as if the bout is a done deal.

Anthony Lima of Cleveland 92.3 reported earlier today (September 7, 2016) that the two men have signed on the dotted line per UFC President Dana White:

Lawler last competed at July 30’s UFC 201 from Atlanta, Georgia, where he surrendered his belt in brutal fashion at the hands of Tyron Woodley. Prior to the loss, Lawler had won five straight including two defenses of his previously held 170-pound strap.

Cerrone, on the other hand, has been on a tear since moving up to welterweight. After losing in a lightweight title bout with former champion Rafael dos Anjos, “Cowboy” decided to test the waters at 170 pounds and has now won three straight by finish over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, and Rick Story.

This potential bout has all the makings to be a firefight and would be a fantastic edition to what should be one of the promotion’s biggest cards of the year in its first-ever event from New York City’s historic Madison Square Garden. The bout would also hold major title implications if it indeed comes to fruition.

Who would you pick to come out on top?

Pivotal Middleweight Bout Rumored For UFC 205

It’s no secret that former UFC middleweight champion and New York native Chris Weidman would like to fight at the UFC’s first card in the Empire State, which will serve as UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 from Madison Square Garden. Despite recently receiving neck surgery, it appears as if Weidman will get his wish.

According to a tweet from 1MMA News & Rumours, and a report from Fansided, the UFC is targeting a bout between Weidman and No. 4-ranked Yoel Romero for the November card:

Weidman hasn’t competed since surrendering his title to Luke Rockhold at December 2015’s UFC 194. He was then scheduled to rematch Rockhold at June 4’s UFC 199, but was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury.

Romero, on the other hand, also hasn’t competed since UFC 194 where he scored a somewhat controversial decision victory over former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. In the aftermath of the bout, it was revealed that Romero had tested positive for a banned substance, but his suspension was reduced to six months after his team proved that a tainted supplement was the reason for the positive test.

Anthony Pettis Calls Out Max Holloway For New York Bout

Former UFC lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis recently got back in the win column after dropping three straight. The win also marked a successful debut at featherweight for Pettis as he submitted top 10-contender Charles Oliveira at UFC on FOX 21 in Vancouver. In the aftermath of the bout, Pettis made it clear that he was gunning for a title shot, and it appears as if he’s looking for a big name in his next scrap.

Speaking on today’s (September 6, 2016) edition of The MMA Hour, “Showtime” said that he’s targeting a fight with No. 3-ranked Max “Blessed” Holloway next, although he did admit that a future at 155-pounds remains an option:

“I’ve made my decision, I think me and Max Holloway would be a great fight. He’s sitting there on the sidelines waiting for a title shot, as well. He’s No. 3 in the world at featherweight and that’s the guy I would love to see myself fighting at 145 pounds. But then at 155 pounds, there are still good fights for me, too. I just have to sit down and figure it out.”

Holloway has won an incredible nine straight and is well-deserving of a title shot, but the division has been held up due to reigning champion Conor McGregor moving up in wait for a rivalry with Nate Diaz. McGregor is expected to drop back down to featherweight in the near future, but he’ll first take on interim titleholder Jose Aldo meaning Holloway will likely be booked in another fight.

Pettis also has his eyes set on a specific date and venue, and it will likely be one of the biggest cards of the year:

“New York City, Nov. 12. There are a lot of special things for me on that day. Nov. 12 is the day my dad passed away. That was rough day for my family. So with a Madison Square Garden fight, that day, it would be awesome to be on the card and make that day a special day for my family, and not have to remember, I mean, we are still going to remember it. We used to take the day completely off, I would hang out with my mom. My mom takes it pretty hard, so that was always a day for my mom.”

Donald Cerrone Wants Title Fight With Eddie Alvarez In New York

Former lightweight title challenger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone was entering the last fight on his current contract at UFC 202 last night (August 20, 2016) where he took on Rick Story in a welterweight bout. Cerrone was able to leave the Octagon successful after smashing Story with a brutal combination in the second round, although he admitted in the aftermath of the bout that he had a rough day prior to fight night:

“I just woke up – worst headache I’ve ever had man,” Cerrone told MMAJunkie after the fight. “All day I was just laying in bed, tired, my shoulders were sore. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. I forgot the key to my Harley. It was a (expletive)-up day. I was trying to get out of first gear and couldn’t do it. That’s what you train for, though, to beat someone on your worst day.”

In recent times, we have seen many fighters test the waters of free agency after fighting out their contracts, but Cerrone is a unique character, and he typically goes about things in his own way. With that being said, “Cowboy” confirmed that he isn’t leaving the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion:

“I let my management team handle that because all I do is fight,” Cerrone said. “I’m a UFC guy, man. I’m not going anyway. They’re going to work out that, and I’m looking to get 50 fights in this mother(expletive). How about that? … I need to get it done, I want to get it done right away, so we’ll see.

“I just talked with (new UFC owner Ari Emanuel), and they seem very happy with me. I see big things in this company. I feel like I’m a veteran of the sport, and I love it. I love fighting for the UFC. This is my drug. I need it as much as I possible can. I feel like a crackhead up here already looking for another fight. It’s good.”

Not only does he plan to stay with the UFC, but he knows exactly what he would like next. Despite usually being unconcerned with the title, Cerrone said that he’d like to drop back down to 155-pounds after winning three straight at welterweight for a rematch with current lightweight boss Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden:

“Normally I’d just say I’ll take anyone, anywhere – I don’t care who I fight,” Cerrone said. “Then they always tell us, ‘If you want a fight, let up hear about it.’ So god-damn it, here we go. I’m letting someone hear about it. It was my 32nd walk at Zuffa. It’s time. Let’s start making some calls and making some moves.”

Cerrone scored a dominant decision victory over Alvarez at Alvarez’s UFC debut back at UFC 178, and he remains ranked inside the top 10 at 155-pounds. UFC President Dana White, however, said that he would prefer Cerrone to stay at 170-pounds, so it should be interesting to see how the situation plays out.
