Former longtime UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo made headlines earlier this week when he told media in Brazil that he had a spy in Frankie Edgar’s training room prior to their UFC 200 (July 9, 2016) interim title rematch. Aldo had said that his spy gave him secret information regarding Edgar’s game plan, and also that it wasn’t the first time he had used the tactic.

Now, however, “Scarface” is going back on his comments. Taking to his official Instagram account, Aldo wrote that it was all just a joke and that he was simply taking a ‘jab’ at bitter rival and reigning 145-pound titleholder Conor McGregor as McGregor made similar comments prior to his clash with Aldo at December 2015’s UFC 194:

Guys now I’ve become invincible… Nobody can beat me and my spies… Sometimes we aren’t taken seriously, and other times we joke around and get taken too seriously, so… let’s clarify I’ve always fought fair. I got to the top through a lot of hard work- both mine and my team’s. I am a principled person and fighter. My team is renowned for its development of tough, technical fighters but also for our collective character, and that’s what we’ll continue to be known for. I’d never do anything that goes against our principles. I fight clean, I fight fair, and I fight tough. When I talked about having spies in Edgar’s camp, it was a reference to a comment Macgregor made before our fight. It was just a jab. Everyone knows you can’t change up your entire strategy on fight week- of course Frankie’s strategy was going to be everything that worked for him in our first fight- it was a no-brainer that he would try the same things. As to spies in camp, relax people…my spies are just in your heads. I’m ready for anyone, no spies required.”

Aldo will now likely go on to rematch McGregor in a unification bout for the ages. In fact, the Brazilian recently said that the fight is being rumored for the UFC’s debut in New York at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 at the historic Madison Square Garden.

The monumental UFC 200 card is just over a week away as the event is slated for July 9, 2016 from the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Featuring three title fights and some of the biggest names in the sport, UFC 200 could very well could go down as the biggest card in promotional history.

One fight that has stuck out lies in the co-main event slot, as former UFC heavyweight champion and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) performer Brock Lesnar will make his highly-anticipated return to action against knockout artist. Mark Hunt. Despite being one of the biggest draws in the history of the sport, Lesnar, who main evented UFC 100, won’t headline the show, as the main attraction features a long-awaited rematch between Daniel Cormier and pound-for-pound king Jon “Bones” Jones.

Jones will attempt to recapture the light heavyweight title he lost to trouble with the law rather than an opponent, and get back to ruling the division. A few more defenses of the strap likely remain for Jones if he topples Cormier, but Lesnar’s future with the UFC is unclear after July 9th.

One interesting suggestion that came from an MMA insider on Twitter earlier today (June 29, 2016) was that Jones, who has touched upon a potential jump to heavyweight in the past, and Lesnar do battle next if both come out victorious:

While this thought may seem a bit outlandish and unrealistic, Jones’ manager, Malki Kawa, replied to the tweet saying that he ‘could see’ the potentially massive clash taking place:

Would you be interesting in seeing the pound-for-pound king dance with “The Beast”?

Chris Weidman Willing To Fight ‘Whoever Wants It’ At MSG

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is still hoping to receive a shot at the title upon his return from injury, but he isn’t too confident that he’ll be granted his wish. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title earlier this month at UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout, leading Michael Bisping to step up on short notice and knock out Rockhold to become the champion.

Weidman, a Long Island native, has called out Bisping multiple times for a fight at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 which will mark the UFC’s inaugural trip to New York at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Bisping, however, has seemed more interested in getting revenge on No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, or perhaps facing off with returning former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At this point, Weidman isn’t going to ‘cry’ about it, but he did confirm that he will be willing to fight anyone as he long as he gets his spot on the MSG card:

“I’ll be at Madison Square Garden waiting for whoever wants it. Bisping doesn’t want it. You know, it was my title shot and he had the opportunity because of me. Now he’s trying to fight the thirteenth ranked guy in the division. It’s good for him. Good for him, man. Fight anybody you want. He’s trying to get a ‘W’ under his belt. Hey, if he can make it happen, good for him. I’m not going to cry about it, honestly.” Weidman told MMAJunkie.

If Weidman isn’t given a shot at Bisping, who would you like to see him face off with in New York? Perhaps a rematch with Rockhold would make sense, although divisional supremacy wouldn’t be on the line this time. Fellow top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza could also present a formidable challenge for Weidman, and the Brazilian should be returning from injury around the November time frame.

When recently asked who he would like to fight next, newly minted UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping expressed interest in some questionable options to say the least. “The Count” threw out two names, specifically noting ageing veteran Dan Henderson and former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

From Bisping’s view, one could see why either of these men would make sense. Henderson scored one of the best knockouts in sport history over Bisping back at UFC 100, a defeat “The Count” clearly wants to avenge, and St. Pierre is one of the biggest draws in promotional history, which in turn would give Bisping a huge fight.

However, neither option makes too much sense from a rankings standpoint. Henderson isn’t ranked inside the top 10 at middleweight, and St. Pierre has been on the sidelines since vacating his title in 2013, although he constantly hints at a potential return. In fact, the Canadian star has apparently expressed interest in fighting Bisping as well.

One man who isn’t happy with these options being discussed is former 185-pound champion Chris Weidman. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title at UFC 199, but was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury, leading Bisping to step up and knock out Rockhold.

Weidman is hoping to receive the next crack at the title, and has blasted Bisping in the media for looking beyond the division’s highest ranked fighters. The ex-champion doesn’t blame St. Pierre, however, as he recently said that GSP is likely looking for an ‘easy’ fight and a belt:

“If it’s true, they see an easy fight, why not go for it and get a belt at the same time? Who wouldn’t want that? I mean, poor Bisping but can you pick one guy in the top 15 that you are sure he can beat? There are definitely guys he can beat but that you would say for sure he would beat? Who is he gonna be a favorite against? Maybe a small favorite [against Henderson].” Weidman said at a Q&A in Canada.

The bad blood definitely seems to be growing between Weidman and Bisping, but who would you realistically like to see “The Count” clash with next?

Frankie Edgar: ‘You Can’t Write’ Better Story Than Me vs. McGregor At MSG

Surging featherweight contender and former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally get his chance to avenge his loss to Jose Aldo at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. The two met back in 2013 for Aldo’s then-held 145-pound title in a close fought five round affair that Aldo came out of

Surging featherweight contender and former lightweight champion Frankie “The Answer” Edgar will finally get his chance to avenge his loss to Jose Aldo at July 9’s UFC 200 from Las Vegas, Nevada. The two met back in 2013 for Aldo’s then-held 145-pound title in a close fought five round affair that Aldo came out of the victor.

This time, an interim title will be on the line, as Aldo surrendered the strap in brutal fashion to Conor McGregor last December. McGregor then decided to move up in weight and challenge Nate Diaz at UFC 196 in a bout where he was submitted in the second round.

McGregor will now look to avenge that loss at August 20’s UFC 202, putting the featherweight division on hold once again.

Edgar, however, is simply focused on the gold, and he plans to beat Aldo before hopefully facing off with McGregor for the undisputed title at November 12’s UFC 205 in New York:

“You can’t write something better than that,” Edgar said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Why wouldn’t Conor want to fight at MSG? There’s definitely a big Irish contingency in New York and it could be possibly biggest fight UFC history.”

Of course this potentially massive fight would require McGregor to drop back down to featherweight, something he has yet to do since capturing the title. Edgar for one isn’t sure if the Irishman will ever defend his crown:

“At ’45, he has everything to lose,” Edgar said. “At ’70 he has nothing to lose, even though Nate is a ’55 pounder and they decided not to cut weight, so they can market going up two weight classes which is ridiculous since he’s a 55 pounder … at ’45, if he loses, he has nothing. He has a hard time making the weight. If he goes to 55 he’s not going to be in the title talks for awhile.”

As far as how Aldo will rebound from his devastating loss to the “Notorious” one, Edgar says that we won’t know until “Scarface” shows up to the Octagon:

“To be so dominant for this long, and then to lose like that, Conor is worst guy to lose to in that fashion,” Edgar said. “He already let the world know before and he let the world know after. He digs better than anybody. Some guys get through it and some guys don’t. He may say this or say that in the leadup for the fight, but even he won’t know until he steps into the Octagon.”
