Top middleweight contender Yoel Romero scored a pivotal and impressive TKO victory over ex-champion Chris Weidman on the main card of Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden in New York City. After the finish, “The Solider of God” celebrated by hopping over the cage and marching around the perimeter of the Octagon before the official result was read.

That celebration, however, was taken lightly by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), as the commission has suspended Romero 60 days. Leaving the cage prior to the fight officially being over is not allowed by the NYSAC, and the surging contender will now be forced to the sidelines until Jan. 12, 2017, per MMAFighting.com.

This suspension shouldn’t affect Romero’s fighting future too much, as “The Solider of God” is expect to next challenge reigning 185-pound champion Michael Bisping. That bout is expected to take place sometime next Spring.

Prior to beating Weidman, Romero had won seven straight UFC bouts including five by way of finish. His most notable UFC victories have come over Tim Kennedy, Lyoto Machida and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.

Pivotal Middleweight Bout Rumored For UFC 205

It’s no secret that former UFC middleweight champion and New York native Chris Weidman would like to fight at the UFC’s first card in the Empire State, which will serve as UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 from Madison Square Garden. Despite recently receiving neck surgery, it appears as if Weidman will get his wish.

According to a tweet from 1MMA News & Rumours, and a report from Fansided, the UFC is targeting a bout between Weidman and No. 4-ranked Yoel Romero for the November card:

Weidman hasn’t competed since surrendering his title to Luke Rockhold at December 2015’s UFC 194. He was then scheduled to rematch Rockhold at June 4’s UFC 199, but was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury.

Romero, on the other hand, also hasn’t competed since UFC 194 where he scored a somewhat controversial decision victory over former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. In the aftermath of the bout, it was revealed that Romero had tested positive for a banned substance, but his suspension was reduced to six months after his team proved that a tainted supplement was the reason for the positive test.

Attempting to rid the sport of performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs), the UFC signed a deal with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) last summer to implement a new and stricter drug testing program. When the partnership was first announced, now former UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta famously stated that “it’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.” Perhaps he was right, as we’ve seen our fair share of fighters popped by USADA in recent memory.

In fact, we’ve seen two of the sport’s biggest stars notified of potential anti-doping violations in just the last few weeks alone. With that being said, it’s interesting to take a look back at USADA’s short history working with the UFC.

Whether it be the most shocking or the most impactful, let’s take a look at the six biggest busts by USADA in the UFC:

Yoel Romero (11-1) was informed on January 12th, 2016 that he potentially tested positive for a failed drug test taken out-of-competition. His team insisted that it was due to a tainted supplement that caused him to fail his USADA test, however, and the supplement was indeed found to have had the incriminating substance in it despite not listing it on the label.

“The substance has a label with a bunch of stuff on it,” his manager Malki Kawa said in an interview days after the news broke. “None of that is illegal to take. What he got popped for is not on the label. So it’s obviously not his fault that he popped for this.”

“I don’t expect it to be two years,” Kawa said. “I don’t think two years would be fair.”

But even though the supplement was found to be the culprit — or at least to some degree — Romero will apparently still receive a suspension, although he doesn’t plan to accept it.

Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday that USADA has given Romero a suspension, and he has decided to appeal the suspension. The middleweight is now headed to arbitration. No word yet on how long the suspension is for.

“Confirmed that USADA has given Yoel Romero a suspension, per sources. He has decided to appeal and will be going to arbitration.“

Romero last fought at UFC 194 when he defeated Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza on the main card, and is currently on a seven-fight winning streak. Following the fight, he was considered as a potential #1 contender for Luke Rockhold’s middleweight title, but obviously his future as a title contender is now on hold as his puzzling suspension situation gets mulled over in an appeal.
