It was recently confirmed by those close to Elias Theodorou, that the former UFC fighter has sadly passed away from cancer.

Elias Theodorou won ‘The Ultimate Fighter: Canada vs. Australia’ in 2014, defeating Sheldon Westcott by second-round TKO to win the middleweight bracket. ‘The Spartan’ would go on to have a successful UFC tenure, holding an 8-3 record and wins over the likes of Eryk Anders and Sam Alvey and only ever falling to long-time contenders, Thiago Santos, Derek Brunson and Brad Tavares.

The Canadian would part ways with the UFC following his 2019 loss to Derek Brunson, later ending his career on a three-fight win streak fighting on the regional scene in Canada and America.

Theodorou was also a vocal advocate for the use of medical cannabis, and in 2020, became the first professional athlete in North America to be granted a medical expectation for the use of marijuana.

“Then factor in what I do—a lot of punching and kicking. Wear-and-tear and damage both as patient and athlete compounds,” he said to Forbes in 2021. “Cannabis works best as a form of pain management, especially compared to the first-line alternatives.”

“Unfortunately U.S. athletes don’t have the same ability to argue medical rights, and definitely not medical cannabis rights,” he says. “I’m looking forward to showing them the blueprint I’ve used both in BC and Canada-wide, but also opening those doors and that conversation beyond Canada.”

TSN reported that Theodorou had been battling stage 4 liver cancer but did not make his diagnosis widely known. It would be later confirmed by MMA News that Theodorou had last his battle, tragically passing away on Sunday evening.

Below is Theodorou’s most recent performance, a winning effort against Bryan Baker.

Rest In Peace Elias Theodorou

“I don’t see any L’s, just growth” – Tony Ferguson on his harsh UFC 279 loss

Tony Fergsuon UFC 279 Nate Diaz

After a baffling and historical fight week for UFC 279, the smoke is settling. Originally slated to give us Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz, a weight miss by ‘Borz’ would see Diaz, and none other than Tony Ferguson throw down in the cage for UFC 279’s main event.

The first round started off at a solid pace, with each fighter landing a few good shots as they felt each other out. A wild spinning elbow by Tony Ferguson was mere inches away from landing in devastating fashion the first minute of the bout, however, Diaz got out of harms way and the fight proceeded.

A big, gushing wound opened up on Ferguson’s shin soon after, but ‘El Cucuy‘ continued on undisturbed. The boxing of Diaz was in full effect, with ‘Mr. 209’ mixing in his patented combos of strange looping stockton slaps and hooks, and straight laser-like jabs and crosses.

As the rounds progressed, both fighters could be seen getting frustrated at one another’s odd fighting style. It was almost ironic that while the matchup of Diaz vs Ferguson was arguably more compelling and competitive than that of Diaz vs Chimaev, it was also harder to prepare for on such a short-notice.

Even with a full camp, solving the strange enigma that is the weird fighting styles of Diaz and Ferguson respectively would be no small task. So, it should not be surprising that the unconventional ways of both men threw each other off during the fight.

An end to an era, and Tony Ferguson’s post-fight presser: “Im still on top of the mountain”

Although his corner kept imploring him to go for a takedown, it would actually spell doom for ‘El Cucuy’. In the fourth round he’d be caught in a guillotine choke, and inevitably tap. It was the end of an era for Nate Diaz, and for Tony Ferguson, it would go down as his fifth consecutive loss in a row.

At the UFC’s post-fight press conference, Tony Ferguson would address the losing streak:

“Im still at the top of the mountain,” he began. “Are you glad sports are back on in the world? Well say thank you then. You’re fu*king welcome.

“When it comes down to an L (a loss),” Ferguson continued. “It has to go into whats been put on the table (fights offered). Putting sports back on in the world, setting an example for these youngsters to not quit. To go in there and not give a sh*t and take the next fight that’s on the wind.”

“Im gonna be real, I don’t see any L’s, I just see growth. The last four fights that I had before this one, I’m gonna be real, I was sandbagging. I wasn’t really doing anything. My wife called me out. I found a good team, the most motley crew of people we could’ve put together and we made some noise.

What’s next for Tony Ferguson?

Khamzat Chimaev, Robert Whittaker

Khamzat Chimaev is not interested in taking on Robert Whittaker.

The rising top-ranked welterweight prospect recently got into an altercation with Paulo Costa at the UFC Performance Institute. He was scheduled to headline UFC 279 against Nate Diaz in a 170-pound bout but got paired up with Kevin Holland after he came in seven and a half pounds over the agreed weight limit.

Khamzat Chimaev does not want to fight Robert Whittaker

Dana White talked about the potential of “Borz” moving up to middleweight in the future. Chimaev was asked about the idea of competing against former 185-pound champion Robert Whittaker. He explained why he was not interested in the matchup.

“I like that guy, so I don’t wanna fight good guys,” Chimaev said. “I need some bad guys, so I wanna fight some bad guys.”

“You care about that sh*t?” Chimaev said at the post-fight press conference (transcribed by Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports ). “I don’t care. I care about my family, I care about my family, I care about my career, I care about my money… One day they’re with me, one day they’re not with me.”

White wants Chimaev to move up

Considering the huge gap Chimaev missed the mark by, his future in the welterweight division looked uncertain. White gave his take on the matter, suggesting a move up to middleweight for “Borz.”

“It’s a problem,” White said (h/t MMAFighting). “That’s a problem that he missed weight. I don’t know. We’ve got to look at it and figure it out. What makes sense is for him to fight at [185 pounds], so we’ll see. “It is what it is. It happened. We’ll go back this week and come up with a plan and probably have him fight at [185]. After he just didn’t make weight, I don’t know,” White said when addressing Chimaev’s future. “There’s a lot of possibilities for him. Possibly at 170 or at 185.”
