UFC Bantamweight Champion Aljamain Sterling says that Leon Edwards winning a UFC title would be huge for Jamaica.

Sterling became the first Jamaican to win a UFC belt with his title win over Petr Yan back at UFC 259. He has since defended his belt to claim his status as the undisputed champion having gone through months of scrutiny regarding his legitimacy as the title holder.

Following the successful defence of his title at UFC 273, Sterling spoke on how he wants to headline a UFC Jamaica card featuring fellow representatives of the country. The UFC bantamweight champion named Edwards, Uriah Hall, Ode Osbourne, and Randy Brown amongst some of the names he wants to see on the card accompanying himself.

In a Q&A Video on Sterling’s podcast ‘The Weekly Scrap Podcast‘ the Jamaican said that Edwards winning the UFC welterweight title would be huge for Jamaica.

“I’m not saying Edwards is going to beat Usman,” said Sterling. “I like both guys, but if Edwards was to get the win that’s a huge feather in the cap for Jamaica. A second one, a second UFC champion. I think he was actually born in Jamaica though and lives in Manchester. I was actually born in the U.S. but my parents and my grandparents are all (born in Jamaica) and I still have family in Jamaica.”

Edwards represents both Britain and Jamaica in the UFC as he proudly carries both flags before and after his UFC performances. The UFC welterweight was born in Kingston, Jamaica, but grew up in Birmingham, England.

UFC 276 is expected to host Edwards’ shot at the title in July as he looks to conquer reigning champion, Kamaru Usman. The fight has yet to have been confirmed, however, with still some uncertainty as to whether the UFC welterweight champion will be ready having recently undertaken hand surgery.

Do you see Jamaica claiming another UFC champion in Leon Edwards?

UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre shared his recent backstage encounter with Nick Diaz at his return to the cage at UFC 266.

Last September, Nick Diaz made his long-awaited comeback to fighting when he took on Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. While Diaz looked phenomenal in his return to the cage for as long as it went on, he didn’t seem to find his form in the cage and didn’t look like himself in the later rounds.

An old foe the Stockton-native ran into just before the fight was none other than former UFC two-division champion Georges St-Pierre. He was at the event cornering his teammate Nasrat Haqparast, who was fighting on the same card. GSP and Diaz shared a heated rivalry during their time in the promotion with Diaz firing multiple shots at the Canadian fighter and the organization.

In a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Georges St-Pierre explained how he was unsure of the reaction he would get from Nick Diaz. During their trash talk in the lead-up to the fight, GSP expressed his confusion on whether Diaz actually took issue with him or not.

Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz’s history in the promotion

“When it happened, he was walking towards me — and with Nick Diaz, you never know,” St-Pierre said. “So I was like, I took a stance in a way, like I didn’t know if he wanted to come to fight me or he wanted to talk to me. [Laughs].

“But when I saw him physically reach out to me with his hand I went, ‘Oh, OK,’ and I reached out and I shook his hand [and thought], ‘So it’s peace, I guess.’”

Speaking on their public feud during some of the most heated press conferences, GSP said, “Nick is one of the guys that took fighting very personal. Whatever that I said, I never wanted to hurt him on a personal level. I just said things to make the fight more interesting.

“I never had any animosity with him or any of the guys once I retired. For me, it’s only business.”

Cris Cyborg Welcomes Opportunity To Land Amanda Nunes Rematch Before Retirement

Cris Cyborg

Ahead of her Bellator return later this month in Hawaii – reigning featherweight titleholder, Cris Cyborg has welcomed the opportunity to avenge her 2018 knockout loss to former two-weight UFC champion, Amanda Nunes – before eventually calling time on her professional career.

Cris Cyborg, 25-2(1) as a professional, initially met with compatriot, Nunes back in December 2018 in the co-main event of UFC 232 – suffering a one-sided first round knockout loss against the then-bantamweight champion, dropping her undisputed featherweight crown.

In the time since, however, Cyborg has embarked on a five-fight winning run – rebounding initially in the UFC with a unanimous decision win over the now-retired, Felicia Spencer, before joining Bellator MMA in late 2020.

Debuting under the Scott Coker-led organizational banner, the Curitiba veteran stopped undisputed featherweight champion, Julia Budd with an eventual fourth round knockout – before then landing a trio of successful title defenses against Arlene Blencowe, Leslie Smith, and most recently in November – stopped Sinead Kavanagh in a first round knockout.

Set to feature at Bellator 279 later this month in the promotion’s return to Hawaii – Cyborg draws New Zealand veteran, Blencowe in a title rematch.

Cris Cyborg had enjoyed a 13-year undefeated run before her 2018 loss to Amanda Nunes

With her contract with the promotion likely coming to an end before the culmination of this year, Cyborg welcomed the possibility of squaring off against UFC featherweight best, Nunes again in the future – potentially under the scrutiny of another promotion.

“Yes, of course!” Cris Cyborg said of a rematch with Amanda Nunes during an interview with TMZ Sports. “In the beginning – after the loss, I said I want the rematch. But, you know – we don’t (make a) deal together, and we don’t like to – don’t deal with, or make that happen – you never know, you never know in the future. Only God knows.”

“For sure, maybe in a different organization, maybe we’re gonna make the fight happen, I don’t know,” Cris Cyborg said.

In her time since her knockout victory over Cyborg – which minted Nunes as a two-weight UFC champion, the Bahia native added four more professional wins over Holly Holm, Germaine de Randamie, Felicia Spencer, and then Megan Anderson – before suffering a shocking second round rear-naked choke loss to Julianna Pena in December of last year, dropping her undisputed bantamweight crown.

Retaining the featherweight title, Nunes recently completed her coaching obligations with Pena head of The Ultimate Fighter 30 – with the two slated to meet in a bantamweight title rematch later this year.

Jake Paul Offers To Fight Michael Bisping: ‘I Would KO You Worse Than Dan Henderson’

Jake Paul

Polarizing professional boxer, Jake Paul has offered to fight former undisputed UFC middleweight champion and Hall of Fame inductee, Michael Bisping in the future – claiming he would land a worse knockout on the Manchester favorite than Dan Henderson did at UFC 100.

Jake Paul, undefeated as a professional boxer, most recently featured back in December of last year in Florida – stopping former undisputed welterweight kingpin, Tyron Woodley with an eventual sixth round, one-punch knockout.

The victory came as Paul’s second over Woodley following a prior split decision victory last April, as well as a knockout win over Ben Askren, and former NBA player, Nate Robinson.

Teasing an August squared circle comeback, Paul recently revealed a list of fighters he hopes to share the ring with next – including former champions, Floyd Mayweather, and Oscar De La Hoya – as well as quite surprisingly, former middleweight titleholder, Bisping.

Responding to Paul’s comments and mention, Bisping poked fun at Paul’s tendency to fight combatants who weigh less than him naturally.

“(Laughing face emoji) Come on @jakepaul you do know I’m about your size? Michael Bisping tweeted. “Surely that excludes me from your “hit list”.”

Jake Paul poked fun at the eye injury suffered by Michael Bisping during his MMA career

Replying to Bisping, Paul claimed he would land a more devastating knockout on the color commentator than the aforenoted, Henderson back at UFC 100 – as well as offering him a $1,000,000 fight purse.

“I would knock you out worse than Hendo (Dan Henderson),” Jake Paul tweeted in response. “You’re an easy fight. But show me you can get licenses and I will show you $1M plus PPV… (eyes emoji). “(using this emoji because (Michael) Bisping can’t use it lololololol)”

Bisping then claimed that regardless of his eye injury suffered during his professional mixed martial arts career, he had earned the “respect of the fight community” – something Paul would never gain.

“(Laughing face emoji) (eyes emoji) yeah yeah, listen one eye, two eyes,” Michael Bisping tweeted. “I won a world championship and more importantly the respect of the fight community. Sadly little Jakey (Paul), that’s 2 things you’ll NEVER so. Ever. Let that sink in.”

Henry Cejudo and Demetrious Johnson have linked up years after their classic rematch four years ago.

The year was 2016. Demetrious Johnson was running roughshod over the UFC’s flyweight division four years into his reign of dominance, and his next targeted victim was a relatively young Henry Cejudo only three years into his MMA career.

Still, Cejudo’s status as an Olympic gold medalist made him a credible foe for Johnson. But even Cejudo would admit that at this point in his MMA career, he wasn’t credible enough.

Johnson defeated Cejudo via first-round KO, with the Olympian looking ill-equipped for the mighty task at hand.

Two years later, with three more fights and two more years of experience under his belt, Cejudo got another crack at Mighty Mouse, and he made good on it.

In what was a hyper-competitive rematch, Cejudo edged out Johnson via split decision. Little could the MMA world know the ramifications those scorecards would have on the history of the sport.

A Triple C & Mighty Mouse Reunion

Following this bout, Johnson would be involved in an unprecedented MMA trade that saw the former flyweight king dealt to ONE Championship and Ben “Funky” Askren shipped to the UFC.

As for Cejudo, he would go on to win the bantamweight championship and retire in 2020.

Fast-forward to 2022 and Cejudo has re-entered the USADA testing pool, signaling an impending return to competition, and Johnson is coming off a victory in a “mixed rules” MMA/Muay-Thai bout against Muay Thai legend Rodtang Jitmuangnon.

Another change? Johnson and Cejudo reuniting in Triple C’s home.

“Guess who stopped by The Cejudo hacienda today. Stay tuned #frenemies,” Cejudo wrote beside a pair of goat emojis.

What could Cejudo be teasing? A Triple C/Mighty Mouse buddy comic book series? A trilogy fight that will blindside the entire MMA community? Or perhaps Cejudo and Johnson will be the first MMA duo to enter pro-wrestling together as a team? “The Mighty Americans?”

Who the heck knows. One thing you can be sure of, though, is that MMA News will keep you posted should anything come from this tease from “Triple C.”

What do you think Henry Cejudo’s “stay tuned” is referring to?

Mounir Lazzez Issues Shout Out To ‘Brother’ Daniel Kinahan Following UFC Vegas 51 Win

Daniel KinahanUFC welterweight and MTK Global signed, Mounir Lazzez issued a shoutout to reputed Kinahan Organized Crime Group leader, Daniel Kinahan following his unanimous decision win over Ange Loosa at UFC Vegas 51 last night, describing him as a “friend” and “brother”, as well as maintaining that his career would not have reached such heights as […]

Daniel Kinahan

UFC welterweight and MTK Global signed, Mounir Lazzez issued a shoutout to reputed Kinahan Organized Crime Group leader, Daniel Kinahan following his unanimous decision win over Ange Loosa at UFC Vegas 51 last night, describing him as a “friend” and “brother”, as well as maintaining that his career would not have reached such heights as the UFC without the help and guidance of Kinahan.

Earlier this week, Daniel Kinahan, as well as his father, Christy Kinahan, and his brother, Christopher Kinahan Jr. – were each hit with sanctions by the United States Department of the Treasury and the Office of Foreign Assets Control. A bounty of up to $5,000,000 was also placed on each of their heads, with rewards issued to those who could provide information that would lead to the disruption of the group’s activities as well as their arrests.

Daniel Kinahan has been described as an “advisor” to many MTK Global signed combatants

Daniel Kinahan, who along with Irish professional boxer, Matthew Macklin founded management firm, MTK Global back in 2012, is said to have seen ties with the management agency cut, however, it is still believed he is playing an active role behind the scene as an advisor to some clients.

Among MTK Global clients are WBC heavyweight boxing champion, Tyson Fury – with boxing promoter, Bob Arum confirmed earlier this week that Kinahan had been paid in the region of $4,000,000 in consultancy fees in Fury’s recent bouts.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger, Darren Till is also signed to MTK Global, and at the beginning of the year, was pictured with Daniel Kinahan on a Dubai beach – and has since defended his relationship with the Dubliner, labelling him as a “friend” of his.

Off the back of his victory against Loosa last night at the UFC Apex facility, Lazzez issued a shoutout to Kinahan, thanking him as well as his coaches – with the event broadcasted across North America on ESPN. Lazzez’s comments on Daniel Kinahan have since been cut from his post-fight interview which has been uploaded on the official UFC YouTube channel.

“I would like to thank my coaches, and my brother, Daniel Kinahan,” Mounir Lazzez said. “I would never be the man I am today, and to – my career to this point. Thanks a lot.”

During his media scrum with assembled reporters after the fight, Lazzez fielded questions from Insider reporter, Al Dawson, who asked several questions regarding his decision to shout out Kinahan – with Lazzez maintaining he was unaware of sanctions imposed against Kinahan.

When asked what he had meant when claiming he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of Kinahan, Lazzez once more backed up his comments that Kinahan was a “friend” and “advisor”.

“That man (Daniel Kinahan) is a friend and advisor,” Mounir Lazzez said. “He’s the one who picked me up every time life had kicked me down. He is a real man of his word. He’s the one who taught me what it means to be real family, a real friend. It’s someone I cannot thank enough for where I am today and who I am today… That’s why I said that, all the shout-out and credit to him.”

When asked if he was aware of sanctions imposed against Kinahan earlier this week, Lazzez replied, “No, I don’t know that.”

After he was informed of the sanctions brought against Kinahan, Lazzez explained how he was not involved in, and how he would “investigate” it himself.

“I think I’m here to entertain people,” Mounir Lazzez said. “I give the credit to whoever deserves credit. I’m not involved in this kind of stuff. I don’t know about it, and I will investigate how it is.”

Lazzez further explained how Kinahan had been offering him “advice” throughout his career, when asked how he felt about legitimizing a reputed cartel leader in combat sports through his shout out.

“No,” Mounir Lazzez said. “For me, it’s a simple thing, a friend outside the gym. I meet him for advice and he helped me throughout my career.”

Lazzez then insisted that he was not aware of sanctions brought against Kinahan, his father, and his brother – maintaining that he was just here to “entertain”.

“I don’t follow this kind of news,” Mounir Lazzez said. “I focus on the sport, I focus on my family. I focus and entertain people that’s the most important.”
