Chael Sonnen brought up the top contenders at bantamweight on his show “Bad Guy Inc” where he talked about two of the biggest winners of UFC 250, Sean O’Malley and Cody Garbrandt.

In the post fight interview, Suga Sean O’Malley talked about potentially matching up with Garbrandt. The eccentric Chael Sonnen went on to discuss this bout that will most likely take place one day.

“Did you guys see that Sean O’Malley called out Cody Garbrandt?” Sonnen said. “Now, I like that for a plethora of reasons – number one, Sean O’Malley is very on brand. As a matter of fact, he told Cody that he was getting better. He complimented Cody. When a younger guy compliments an older guy, in any walk of society, there’s something condescending about it, but guys, it’s a call out. It can’t all just be moonlight and canoes — there has to be a dig. That was one of the digs. He let Cody know.”

Sonnen went on to talk about the matchup, “I’d love to see that match, For many reasons, I’d love to see that match. I think that’s going to be possibly a hard one for O’Malley to get if you were to just go by the rankings. I’ve never bought into the idea fully, perhaps I should, that the winner of Aljo [Sterling] and Sandhagen would be the one to fight the winner of Aldo and Yan. The only reason I didn’t buy into it is because on that same card, you had the same weight class with Cody vs Assuncao — only that was two matches later! You don’t put your feature match earlier.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

It seems likely that these 2 contenders will almost certainly square off in the octagon one day, but for their next fight? It doesn’t seem very likely, as O’Malley might need a fight or two before stepping up to fight a former champ. Or, you can make the fight while they are both red hot.

What do you think? Should the UFC make this fight next? How do you see this potential bout playing out?

Alexander Volkanovski Guarantees He’ll Finish Max Holloway At UFC 251

Alexander Volkanovski

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has vowed to finish Max Holloway inside five rounds when the pair square off for a second time at UFC 251 on July 11. Earlier this week UFC president Dana White announced Volkanovski would make his first title defence against the man he dethroned at UFC 245 late last year.

Originally this rematch was planned for Perth, Australia but the ongoing global pandemic means Volkanovski and Hollway will now throw down on ‘Fight Island’. Speaking to ESPN after the rematch was announced Volkanovski expressed his intent to fight for the finish against ‘Blessed’ on July 11, he said.

“This is a rematch and I’ve got something to prove right now, this is bigger than just a win. I don’t want to go out there and just beat him, I’ve already done that. I dominated him for five rounds last time, but they give him a rematch anyway.

“People quickly forget how I did it, there were biased opinions and commentary, everything. So I’m a little bit annoyed, I feel disrespected. I’ve got something to prove this time, I’ll put him away inside the five [rounds] this time. I guarantee you that. I’m sending a message.”

Volkanovski will now take every day and every training session he can in preparation for a determined opponent who wants to reclaim his throne, he said.

“We’ve got the same schedule as we do every camp, which means we’re busting our ass. But I’ll be doing everything I can here and then we’ll fly out a week before, I can’t really go any earlier than that because each day is crucial here [in Australia] and I want to finish my camp solidly. I don’t want to go over there early and miss out on a few sessions. So the four weeks that I’ve got to prepare still, just busting my ass on the schedule that we always do; then head over to there to Fight Island and put on a show.”

Do you think Alexander Volkanovski will finish Max Holloway at UFC 251?

Francis Ngannou

Top ranking heavyweight contender Francis Ngannou shared photos of himself in 2013 after spending time in Jail due to illegal immigration.

Taking to twitter Ngannou posted the images accompanied by a caption detailing his situation at the time and reminding his followers that they too can succeed.

“2013: 7 years ago we were freed by Spanish homeland security after spending 2 months in jail for illegally entering Europe by sea. This, after attempting for one year from Morocco. I had nothing by then but a dream and a faith of pursuing it. Some people will always tell you that it’s too late, that you can’t make it, that it’s not meant for you, that you’re not worth it, or that you can’t succeed without them (while their lives aren’t an exemple of success). Those voices are always around the corner to make you quit your dream and maybe your destiny. It’s up to you and only you if you let them get to your mind, but you can also reject or ignore the negativities around you and make it in your own way. #throwbackthursday

The Cameroonian born fighter has spoken in the past of his journey to get to where he is today. Finding his way to France with no money, being homeless but finding a way to continue and train.

The #2 ranked Heavyweight fighter has been waiting for his second title shot for a long while now, with the biggest roadblock being the trilogy between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.

With that matchup now being made, Ngannou’s road to the championship seems clear but him being the clear next in line for the winner of that title fight.

In the meantime, Francis has been taking on the stars of the heavyweight division and finishing them in spectacular fashion, currently sitting on a four-fight win streak all coming in the first round by knockout.

Justin Tafa

Australian heavyweight Justin Tafa will face off against Brazilian fighter Raphael Pessoa on July 25th at “Fight Island”.

Taking to his Instagram Pessoa shared the bout confirming earlier reports that it would take place. The matchup joins one of four events during a two-week stint in July on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Pessoa will be entering this matchup with a 50/50 record in the UFC. Debuting against rising heavyweight contender Cyril Gane, Pessoa found his first loss inside Mixed Martial Arts being submitted in the first round in August of 2019.

The Brazilian would return to the octagon in October to face former LFA heavyweight champion Jeff Hughes in Singapore. Pessoa would find the victory in this matchup by way of unanimous decision.

Justin Tafa also entered the UFC with a rocky start. The formerly undefeated Mark Hunt protégé debuted against Yorgan De Castro in front of 60,000 people in Melbourne Australia at UFC 243 back in October of 2019. The bout was over quickly with Tafa being finished by KO early in the first round.

Tafa would bounce back from this loss in February securing a TKO victory over Juan Adams that would see Adams leave the organization.

Both fighters being 1 and 1 in the UFC means they will both be looking to make a statement in this matchup.

The bout joins an already stacked card to be headlined by fellow Australian, former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. Facing off against former welterweight title contender Darren Till.

This line-up will include:

  • Robert Whittaker vs. Darren Till
  • Alexander Gustafson vs. Fabricio Werdum
  • Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Mauricio Rua
  • Bethe Correia vs. Pannie Kianzad
  • Movsar Evloev vs. Mike Grundy
  • Raphael Pessoa vs. Justin Tafa

Stephen Thompson

Former UFC Welterweight title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson has shared that he would be willing to move up in weight to face UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

Thompson shared his desire to face another high-level striker in Adesanya while speaking to Severe MMA.

“You know, I always told myself if I ever got the title and Robert Whittaker was still the champion at that weight you know, since I faced him before that I would be cool to go up and fight him again,”.

“But to be honest with you, I’m not a big welterweight. I walk around at 190, 195. You know, when I spar and train with guys like Chris Weidman whose a 185er, just to feel the power and strength of these guys is ridiculous. When he grabs me by my wrist I feel like a five-year-old, I can’t get away. So to face guys like him in that division, because I’m not a big guy, I would literally have to put on some muscle and weight to move up to that middleweight class,”.

“As of right now (no), but in the future, I don’t know. I mean if Adesanya is still the champion if I get that title, that could be a possibility, just to mix things up.”

Both athletes come from a kickboxing background with Wonderboy boasting an undefeated record of 57-0 in the ring. When Adesanya made the transition to MMA he held a Kickboxing record of 75-5.

Thompson remains the #6 ranking welterweight in the UFC and it would seem he is first setting his sights on the title before he considers the move up in weight. With welterweight being as stacked a division as it is right now, it is unclear when Wonderboy will be able to find his third shot at the title.
