Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal has been speaking about his potential future fight against welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Despite not being official yet, the pair are expected to square off in July during International Fight Week.

On the back of a massive year in 2019, ‘Gamebred’ has turned
his attention to ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. Whilst winning his first UFC title
would be a huge deal, Masvidal explained why fighting Usman is bigger than that.

“I’d break his face – I’d (expletive) his ass up,” Masvidal told MMA Junkie. “(The title) definitely signifies something. But more than that, beating Usman in a really bad way would be better for me in a way. He’s got a couple victories against a couple of my teammates, so I definitely got to represent for ATT there and take his head off.”

Masvidal and Usman got into a scuffle during Super Bowl Radio Row in Miami. The pair went viral, whilst shouting back and forth. Dana White went on record to scold the fighters, Masvidal though was keen to play down the situation.

“Nothing was going to happen there,” Masvidal said. “I’m not
going to touch somebody that’s already incapacitated and (expletive). He’s a
punk and I just wanted to tell him to his face, ‘I’m going to (expletive) you
up.’ I don’t know what he got so upset about. I just wanted to tell him the
truth that I’m going to (expletive) you up when we finally fight. He always
says he wants people to keep that same energy and say it to his face, that’s
exactly what I did.”

Once the fight is official don’t expect either man to let up on the trash talk. It’s very apparent Masvidal has a personal problem with Usman. One he’ll look forward to working out inside the octagon.

“He’s got like 38 personalities,” Masvidal said. “Every week
I keep finding a new one. I don’t like any of them so far. I’ve known this guy
for a while and he wasn’t that guy before. He was asking me for pictures and
handshakes back in the day. Really his name is Kamarudeen. It’s not even
Kamaru. He actually shortened up his real birth name. This guy is just a head
case of head cases.”

Headline: Dana White Weighs In On Disagreement Between Joe Rogan & Stephen A. Smith

Author: Fernando Quiles Jr.

UFC President Dana White has given his two cents on the disagreement between Joe Rogan and Stephen A. Smith.

Stephen A. got plenty of flak for his comments on Donald Cerrone’s performance against Conor McGregor at UFC 246. “Cowboy” was defeated in 40 seconds. During the post-UFC 246 edition of SportsCenter, Stephen A. said he felt Cerrone “gave up” and that his performance was “atrocious.”

Rogan fired back at Stephen A. and said he shouldn’t be allowed to talk about the sport of MMA. The two have gone back-and-forth since and even Conor McGregor chimed in.

White Responds To Rogan-Stephen A. Ordeal

MMAJunkie.com caught up with UFC boss Dana White, who gave his viewpoint on the situation. White said disagreements are simply bound to happen between two opinionated personalities.

“I’m not into it. Rogan is not into it. You don’t see that in the UFC. There will be times where I’m pissed off at a guy, and I’ll voice my opinion on what he did or whatever – or if a fight is really bad or somebody did something. What we don’t do is, when a fight is over and a guy loses, we don’t go in and rip them apart. It’s just not our style. We’re fans. We don’t do it. I think Rogan was reacting to that. That’s our philosophy here. For Stephen A. Smith, that’s his thing. That’s what he does. It’s going to happen. You’re always going to have people who have difference in opinions, especially when you have two very opinionated guys like Stephen A. Smith and Joe Rogan.”

Stephen A. has been discussing UFC bouts more since the promotion’s deal with ESPN. While Smith has covered MMA in the past, he doesn’t do so nearly as much as other sports such as basketball or football.

While many within the MMA community have been at odds with Stephen A., some have looked at the other side. There’s no doubting that Stephen A. is ESPN’s most popular personality and his reach to the casual sports fan is significant. If he talks about lesser-known MMA fighters, it could boost their stock. Of course, insinuating that a fighter quit can also have the opposite effect.

Charles Oliveira: Pressure Is On Kevin Lee At UFC Brasilia

Oliveira

Charles Oliveira believes all the pressure is on Kevin Lee ahead of their fight.

The two ranked lightweights are set to collide in the main event of UFC Brasilia on March 14. Last month, Lee — who returned to the win column with an emphatic head knick knockout of Gregor Gillespie at UFC 244 in November — revealed that he wanted to shut the Brazilian fans up by beating one of their own.

There’s nothing wrong with being confident, but statements like that also bring about added pressure according to Oliveira.

The Brazilian, on the other hand, does his talking in the Octagon:

“I think he is the favorite to win,” Oliveira told Tatame (via Bloody Elbow). “It’s like he said, he’s ‘the man.’ He said that. No matter what, that comes with pressure.

“I’ll fight like I always have, no pressure. Always moving forward, using my striking and my grappling. Let him say what he will do, that he will shut everyone up. The pressure is on him, not me.”

Oliveira is on a six-fight winning streak with finishes in all those outings. A finish over Lee would arguably be the biggest win of “Do Bronx’s” career and could put him in title contention.

He acknowledges that Lee is a tough foe, but does see one aspect of his game that he can take advantage of:

“Kevin Lee is really tough,” he added. “He has some flaws in his game that we can work with. I think he mixes up his boxing and his wrestling really well. He takes you down, he unleashes some strong ground and pound.

“However, he usually starts a round strong and then starts to fade. In five rounds, I think I can take an advantage of that.”

Shevchenko

UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has a very unique stipulation in her contract.

Shevchenko defends her title against Katlyn Chookagian in the co-main event of UFC 247 this Saturday in Houston. As is the case, title fights are usually stacked on or headline pay-per-view events.

However, there are odd exceptions. Shevchenko’s last title defense against Liz Carmouche, for example, came at UFC Uruguay. And that’s because competing in Fight Night events is something that “Bullet” specifically asked for in her contract in order to remain active:

“I’m a person who wants to compete more often and as much as I can,” Shevchenko told MMA Junkie. “That’s why, when I signed my new agreement with UFC, one of the things I asked is to be able to compete not only in pay-per-views, but also in different events of UFC to be able to compete more often. So, for me, the more often I compete, the more happy I am.”

That might seem counterproductive, especially as the big money and attention comes from the pay-per-view events.

However, money has never been a factor for Shevchenko the way it has for others. It’s still important, however, but she cares more about the journey and investing in herself:

“This mentality came from very, very far away,” Shevchenko added. “I was growing up with this idea that it doesn’t matter what you are doing, the most important is the journey and what you get through this. Of course when you get more money it’s a great thing. What I think about money is it gives you certain freedom in your actions.

“I don’t want to spend money on buying car. I don’t want to spend money buying houses or things. I want to spend money on my travels, to invest in myself, to learn more, to get more knowledge for exploring new things.”

Joe Rogan: Tony Ferguson Is Khabib’s Toughest Opponent

Khabib Nurmagomedov Ferguson

UFC commentator Joe Rogan is one of many who doesn’t understand why Tony Ferguson is being overlooked against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Ferguson challenges Nurmagomedov for his lightweight title in the main event of UFC 249 on April 18 in Brooklyn, New York. However, there is already talk of Conor McGregor facing Nurmagomedov in a rematch with UFC president Dana White claiming that is the fight that is next for the Irishman.

Of course, Nurmagomedov has to get past Ferguson first, which will be no easy feat. Rogan even believes “El Cucuy” is the toughest fight of his career:

“I don’t know why they’re saying that when Khabib has to fight Tony motherf*cking Ferguson,” Rogan said in a recent episode of his podcast. “Tony’s the boogeyman. That nickname ‘El Cucuy’ is a perfect nickname for that guy. That guy is terrifying. He never gets tired, everyone that fights him look like they fell off a train. It’s crazy.

“I think Khabib vs. Tony is the toughest fight of Khabib’s career. I really believe that. I think Tony Ferguson is a nightmare for anybody. Especially right now. When you watch his fight with Anthony Pettis, how he busted up Donald Cerrone — I think Tony Ferguson is the scariest guy for anybody at 155 pounds to fight.”

With all that in consideration, when it comes to a Nurmagomedov vs. McGregor rematch, Rogan says he wouldn’t be making any plans until after April 18:

“I would not be making any plans,” Rogan added. “If I was Dana or I was anybody else — I would not be making any plans. Khabib can win that fight. Tony can win that fight too.”

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would like to compete outside Las Vegas more often.

Jones defends his title against Dominick Reyes in the UFC 247 headliner on Saturday. For a change, the fight will not be in Sin City as it takes place in Houston, Texas. Although Jones has fought in various cities throughout his career, four of his last six fights have taken place in Las Vegas.

If the numbers do well for UFC 247, Jones would like to compete in other markets, even potential foreign ones.

“Maybe I need to step outside of Las Vegas and fight in these markets where people don’t see me too often,” Jones told MMA Junkie. “I think that’s going to be important.

“If I can possibly break numbers here in Houston, I can only imagine what would happen if I went to Australia or one of these other countries where they’d never expect to see me. The people would come out and that’s what it’s all about.”

Jones has spoken of building his brand more to emulate the likes of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. One way of doing that would be to fight in places such as Australia.

It’s also funny that “Bones” mentioned Australia as it could be a potential location for a super fight with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya down the line.

Jones acknowledged that “The Last Stylebender” is a big draw, especially Down Under. However, he joked that that he’d be a bigger one.

“Yeah he is (a big draw),” Jones added. “I bet I’d be even bigger.”
