The 100 Greatest Moments in UFC History

On Saturday, Nov. 12, the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its broadcast network television debut with UFC on Fox: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos. At this point, it’s safe to say the UFC’s popularity is snowballing. Even that may be a mild analogy. With the UFC and its fighters finding newer and wider avenues into the mainstream seemingly every day, MMA’s premier promotion is more like a magnet in a river of paper clips, or a molten ball of caramel careening down a mountain of chopped walnuts.

You get the idea. These are heady times for the UFC.

The UFC’s blockbuster deal with the network that brought you The Simpsons and Terry Bradshaw is just the latest in a long line of accomplishments. So as a celebration of how far it has all come, here’s a list of the greatest moments in UFC history. This encompasses old school and new, serious and funny, inside and outside the Octagon. Moments that were special to witness or helped in some way to move the sport closer to where it is today — which is to say, on the precipice of world domination.

Cain VelasquezIn less than two weeks, the UFC will finally air a fight on broadcast network television for the first time when it presents UFC on FOX 1, a one-hour special on Nov. 12 that will see heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez attempt to defend his belt against No. 1 contender Junior dos Santos.

This past weekend, FOX aired a one-hour Primetime, which gave an all-access look at the fight and its participants. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Primetime producer Jason Hehir discussed the creative process behind the show.

Now, in case you missed it, the entire episode of UFC Primetime: Velasquez vs. dos Santos is after the jump.

UFC 137 Press Conference Notes: ‘TUF Brazil’, UFC’s Hawaii Debut, Silva vs. Sonnen II + More

A lot of interesting developments coming out of yesterday’s “UFC 137: Penn vs. Diaz” press conference…

— UFC President Dana White confirmed that the first international edition of The Ultimate Fighter will be in Brazil, not the Philippines as previously reported. White described TUF Brazil as “a done deal,” though other details, including its host and where it will take place, haven’t been locked down yet. The series will air in Brazil, and possibly on FUEL TV in North America. White also said that the UFC will be actively working on booking “as many [events] as we possibly can” in Brazil.

— Meanwhile, the UFC is also working on putting together their first event in Hawaii, which is slated for 2012, and could be held at an outdoor venue. In the past, the UFC had been hesitant to promote a show in Hawaii due to an exorbitant promoters’ tax the state required, but that situation was later “fixed”, and rumors of a UFC show at the Aloha Bowl have circulated for the past two years.

— While only the main event is guaranteed airtime during the one-hour UFC on FOX 1: Velasquez vs. Santos broadcast on November 12th, Dana White confirmed that the entire supporting card will be viewable on Facebook and FOX.com. Notably, that includes the possible #1 lightweight contender match between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson.

— Has Chael Sonnen successfully trash-talked his way into a rematch with Anderson Silva on Super Bowl weekend? As White explained at the UFC 137 press-conference, “I am meeting with (Anderson’s camp on Saturday)…You know Chael’s position. And I think Anderson’s position is really the same as Chael’s. Anderson’s really pissed off about the stuff that Chael has said.” When asked if the fight could be set up for Super Bowl weekend, White replied, “I think it would make sense, yeah.”

— And get this: Strikeforce might actually survive into 2012. Said DW: “I met with Showtime yesterday and I had a great meeting with them. I’m jumping in [to the negotiations]. Lorenzo Fertitta and I divide and conquer. We’re both so busy and we’re working on so much stuff, so to get this deal moving we needed the kinder, gentler side of the UFC there in the beginning. Now, I’m going to go in there and close it…We had a great conversation. We moved the ball forward and we’ll see what happens. There is no deal done. I just think we had a great meeting… We have a chance that Strikeforce lives.”

Considering that Strikeforce has already been raided for its best fighters — Nick Diaz, Dan Henderson, and Alistair Overeem, with Gilbert Melendez on the way — it doesn’t seem like Strikeforce would be anything other than a feeder league. But with Bellator on the rise, diluting the MMA talent pool could be the end goal in itself.

No Guaranteed Title Shot for Clay Guida-Ben Henderson Winner … Yet

Clay GuidaLAS VEGAS — Up until now, it’s been assumed that the winner of UFC on Fox 1’s co-main event will be the next man up to face current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.

But that’s no guarantee.

UFC president Dana White told MMA Fighting that on the heels of Edgar’s stirring comeback knockout win over Gray Maynard, he’s yet to determine the champion’s next challenge.

Asked whether it was a sure thing that the Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson winner would earn a chance to fight for the belt, White initially said no.

But that’s not necessarily his final answer. Moments later, he clarified his thoughts, saying that his unrelenting schedule hasn’t afforded him the opportunity to sit down, examine the situation and make a decision.

“I don’t know. I have no idea,” he said. “We’re going to have to see what happens. I haven’t even thought about it. You have to understand, the only thing I’m thinking about now is FOX. I’ve just got to get past this event. Everything else is taking a back seat. All the other s— will work itself out.”

After a decision win over Anthony Pettis, Guida (29-11) is currently riding a four-fight win streak while Henderson (14-2) has won seven of his eight fights under the Zuffa banner, most recently dominating Jim Miller en route to a decision at UFC Live: Lytle vs. Hardy.

Despite the possible importance of the bout, the Guida-Henderson bout will not be televised, airing on Facebook.com and FOX.com.

Still, the Guida-Henderson winner seems like the most likely option for Edgar. Other possibilities include the Donald CerroneDennis Siver winner from Saturday night, or Gilbert Melendez if he is brought over from Strikeforce. Both Jim Miller and Melvin Guillard recently had win streaks snapped that likely removed them from the conversation.

LAS VEGAS — One fight on the UFC‘s debut outing on network television is likely to be the most watched fight in North American TV history. The others going on that same night though won’t even find their way on to television.

UFC president Dana White on Thursday said that every fight under the main event heavyweight title match will air on Facebook and FOX.com.

That means that even the possible No. 1 contenders fight pitting Ben Henderson and Clay Guida won’t find its way on to TV. White said that the promotion considered putting the fights on ION, but ultimately decided against it.

“The way that we looked at this thing as we sat down and figured it out, it just made sense to do this fight on FOX and put the prelims on the internet,” he said.

The UFC’s deal with FOX doesn’t officially kick in until January 2012, but the November 12 event will function as an introduction to the UFC, as a big audience is expected to tune in and watch heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez attempt to defend his crown against Junior dos Santos. The one-hour special begins at 9 pm ET.

Meanwhile, because the UFC’s current deal with Spike has yet to expire, they can not air fights on a competing cable network. That left few options, and while ION was considered, the UFC ultimately has chosen to put all its efforts behind the major main event. In related news, FOX will air a “UFC Primetime” on Velasquez and dos Santos this Sunday following their scheduled broadcast of NFL football.
