Paige VanZant Blames ‘Not Preparing’ Jiu-Jitsu For UFC on FOX 22 Loss

Rising women’s strawweight star Paige VanZant suffered another setback, dropping a first round submission loss to Michelle Waterson in the main event of last night’s (Dec. 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 from Sacramento, California. The loss marked the second of VanZant’s last three Octagon performances.

Despite this recent stretch, however, the young “12 Gauge” isn’t worried about her future:

“I was meant for the spotlight, and I’m going to continue to be in the spotlight,” VanZant said during the post-fight press conference. “I will be back, and I’m going to have the belt one day. I’m 22 years old. I have a long time, so I have the best team in the world. I’ll be back.”

VanZant faced off with a former Invicta champion in “The Karate Hottie” and it’s clear to say that her weakness was exploited in the fight:

“Michelle Waterson’s a really good fighter,” she said. “She used to be the atomweight champion for Invicta FC, so I know she’s going to go very, very far in this sport. I knew it was going to be a big test for me. Gotta work on my jiu-jitsu, apparently, so I’m going to do that.”

While the No. 7-ranked strawweight blames the loss on ‘not preparing’ her jiu-jitsu correctly, she also said that she simply got caught:

“I got caught tonight,” she said. “It happens. I’m not blaming any other outside factors, no matter what went on. I got caught, and it happens in this sport.”

“Before I fought Bec, I was supposed to be in a movie, and I turned it down because it was going to mess up my fight game. This just came down to not preparing my jiu-jitsu, and that’s it.”

Who would you like to see PVZ attempt to bounce back against next?

Coming off of arguably the biggest win of last night’s (Saturday December 17, 2017) UFC on FOX 22 event form Sacramento, ‘The Karate Hottie’ Michelle Waterson is ready to take the next step in her UFC career.

Waterson was able to put away No. 7-ranked opponent Paige VanZant with an early first round submission win, after getting the fight to the ground and locking in a rear-naked choke that forced the Team Alpha Male product to tap. During her post-fight press conference interview, courtesy of FOX Sports, Waterson says she’s ready to jump into the Octagon with a top five contender at 115 pounds:

“I would like to get back in there soon,” Waterson said. “I was ready for a five-round war. I’m glad I got the submission in the first round but whatever the UFC has in store for me.

“I’d like to fight maybe a top-five contender. I do want to fight. I don’t know who I want to fight.”

When asked for a specific name, Waterson doesn’t have anyone in particular in mind that she’d like to throw down with next, but is focused on one day accomplishing her goal of becoming a UFC champion.
“I don’t have any name in mind but my ultimate goal is to be UFC champ,” Waterson said.
Now on a two-fight win streak, the former Invicta FC atomweight champion is ready to prove that she belongs in the conversation when it comes to the elite of the female strawweight division. Who do you think ‘The Karate Hottie’ will throw down with next?

Mickey Gall Reveals Sage Northcutt’s In-Fight Trash Talk

Mickey Gall continues to impress inside of the UFC Octagon, as he comes off of a second round submission win over young mixed martial arts (MMA) star Sage Northcutt in their co-main event meeting at last night’s (Saturday December 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 event from California.

Gall clipped ‘Super Sage’ with a wild overhand right that rocked the youngster, and the Gracie jiu-jitsu brown belt was able to capitalize off of a stuffed takedown attempt to lock in the rear-naked choke and force Northcutt to tap. Prior to that, however, Northcutt was noticeably saying things to Gall during their bout, talking some trash to his adversary after cutting him open, something nobody really expected from the polite young Texan.

During the post-fight press conference (courtesy of MMA Fighting) Gall revealed exactly what Northcutt was telling him during their bout:

“I’ll tell you this first,” Gall said. “I wanted to play the bad guy a little bit for this, but there is no way you could be the nice guy with Sage. I wanted to talk to get him to engage with me a little bit, make him step out of his character and talk some crap maybe. And he didn’t the whole time, I was just like, ‘Ah, he’s such a sweet kid and he’s not going to do it.’ But it came out in the fight and you saw how the fight went down and I think that helped me.

“So what he said was when he stood up from my guard he was like, ‘Get up, get up,’ and he was standing right over me, so I was like, ‘Why don’t you come down? I thought you said you jiu-jitsu is better than mine,’ because he said that in the show. And the when I got up I was like, ‘What? you’re tired?’, and he was like, ‘Nah, I never get tired.’ I got to say, I like Sage with an edge. And when he blackened my eye and then he cut me, he was like, ‘Oh, that was good.’ He was talking some crap, I like that he came out a little bit.”

After his win over Northcutt, Gall expressed his interest in dropping down to the 155-pound division, claiming he believes he’ll be the champion of the talent-stacked weight class in the near future. Gall even went as far as challenging UFC veteran Dan Hardy to a lightweight bout if he decides to return to fighting action.

A legendary fighting career came to an end last night (Dec. 17, 2016), as former WEC champion Urijah Faber made his final walk to the Octagon at UFC on FOX 22 from his hometown of Sacramento, California in a bantamweight bout with fellow veteran Brad Pickett.

With Faber making it known prior to last night’s event that he would be fighting for the last time, many had begun to reflect on the lengthy career of “The California Kid”. It’s now time for us here at LowKickMMA to join in on the fun and take a look at Faber’s five best fighting moments (presented in chronological order):

WEC 19: Urijah Faber vs. Cole Escovedo

One of the main knocks on Faber’s career is that he was never able to get his hands on a UFC title, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t ever a world champion. “The California Kid” won the WEC featherweight title at WEC 19 on March 17, 2006 during a time when the UFC didn’t have a 145-pound division.

Taking on the promotion’s inaugural featherweight titleholder in Cole Escovedo, Faber scored a second round stoppage victory due to a corner’s stoppage in a fight that undoubtedly marked one of the best moments of his career. This fight also marked the beginning of a successful title run for “The California Kid”.
