UFC on FOX 3: Is the Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller Winner Worthy of a Title Shot?

UFC 145 marked the end of a lengthy break between major events for the promotion, and May 5 will mark the return of the UFC to mainstream consciousness when they broadcast on FOX for the first time since January.

Nate Diaz and Jim Miller will enter the cage in Newark, New Jersey, as they headline UFC on FOX 3 in a lightweight title eliminator. Dana White has said the man who wins is likely to meet Benson Henderson or Frankie Edgar some time later in 2012.

The question is: Does that man deserve a shot at gold?

It’s actually proven to be more contentious than people realize.

In one corner, there’ll be Miller, an impressive 21-3 in his career and 10-2 in the UFC. His losses have only come to Henderson, Edgar and Gray Maynard—the other three men with him in the top four of his division.

Across from him will be Diaz, a polarizing warrior who is often under appreciated at lightweight because he’s not everyone’s favorite guy outside of the cage. Still, he’s 8-3 at 155 pounds in the UFC, and two of his three losses were hotly contested decisions that resulted in highly questionable losses.

He could easily be 10-1 and already have a title shot in his rear view mirror, but instead he’s on his way to Jersey to try and earn his first crack at gold.

Even so, some people are arguing that both men haven’t done enough to warrant a shot at the title. Miller’s loss to Henderson is less than a year old, and he’s only won one fight since. Diaz has only been back at 155 for two fights after a hiatus to welterweight.

In a division that’s so deep, there are arguments for a bunch of other guys who have been in the mix for a while.

Here’s the issue, though: None of those other guys have sprung up and grabbed the bull by the horns.

Maynard had two title shots in a row and couldn’t secure a win. Clay Guida lost to Henderson in his last outing and will match Maynard next time out. Anthony Pettis had some play, but couldn’t use a win over Joe Lauzon to springboard himself into a shot at gold. He’s elected for surgery while he waits things out in the division.

After those three, who else is there?

Nobody, really.

Miller, later revealed to be ill in his first meeting with Henderson, is as tough as they come and has repeatedly shown that he’ll beat anyone in the division who isn’t a champion. We don’t know yet if that carries over to title fights because he hasn’t yet had that chance.

Diaz is a born fighter and a handful for anyone at lightweight. He’s only been outwrestled at 155—never really beaten and broken—and though he lost to Maynard, there were few who felt it was overly convincing. After his decisive beatdown of Donald Cerrone—a man most had pegged to use Diaz as a launching pad for a title shot—he thrust himself right back into the thick of things.

So why not let these two go at it, and give the winner a shot at gold?

The beauty of a division that’s so deep is that there are plenty of credible threats for a title shot, and there are lots of roads to travel to get there. This isn’t boxing, where anything less than 40-0 isn’t worthy. Jim Miller and Nate Diaz are as deserving as anyone, even if they’ve taken unconventional paths to get there.

UFC on FOX 3 is exciting for a host of reasons, but Miller/Diaz is the biggest. It’s a lock to be a war, and it will also give the world a top contender in a division that presently needs one. Opinions to the contrary notwithstanding, it’s hard to hate that.

UFC on Fox: Nate Diaz and 5 Fighters Who Have Turned Their Careers Around

Despite starting his career in the Octagon with five straight victories, it appeared as if Nate Diaz was destined for gatekeeper status after losses to Clay Guida, Joe Stevenson and Gray Maynard back in 2009 and early 2010.

The younger brother of welterweight stud Nick Diaz has earned his stripes on his own and has continued to grow as a fighter with every bout. Who would have predicted that Diaz would outclass Takanori Gomi in the striking portion of their September fight? With the breakout year that Donald Cerrone had, it was surprising to many that Nate would spend three rounds dismantling the former WEC star.

When Nate Diaz takes on Jim Miller in the main event of UFC on Fox 3, he has the opportunity to show the world that he has completely turned his career around.

Here is a look at some current UFC fighters who, like Nate, have been able to put their careers back on the right track.

“So you want to be a fighter?”

Dana White‘s iconic quote makes fans and fighters alike consider how impossibly difficult it is to compete in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Cross-training in multiple disciplines and spending most of your time in the gym is beyond the limits of normal men and women. Perhaps that is one of the reasons that we look up to successful mixed martial artists.

Today’s article is a celebration of the fighters who go above and beyond the normal UFC schedule. We will look at fighters who fight frequently against hefty competition, and those fighters who are ready to assist Joe Silva in case a scheduled fighter is affected by injury.

In this article, we look at the UFC stars who say they will fight anyone, any time, anywhere…and actually mean it.

UFC 145 competitor Jon Jones earned his spot on this list with his fantastic 2011. One more fighter who is fighting on Saturday night made the list too. Can you guess which one?

Note: For the sake of this article, I only included fighters who are on the active UFC roster.

Thiago Taveres Injured, Michael Johnson to Fight Tony Ferguson at UFC on FOX 3

As Thiago Tavares is the latest withdrawn fighter from the fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC on FOX 3, UFC officials announced today that Michael Johnson will replace Tavares in the lightweight bout.

Though it’s likely that Ferguson will be happy to finally settle into a fight with a sure opponent, things have only gotten more promising for the TUF winner since he made the card headlined by Nate Diaz and Jim Miller. Before Tavares suffered an injury, Ferguson was slated to fight Dennis Hallman who also withdrew due to injury.

Now Johnson will enter the ring with much more to prove than Ferguson, who is undefeated in his brief UFC career.

The TUF alumni have had nearly opposite experiences since beginning their respective UFC careers.

Since Johnson’s loss at TUF 12 in 2010, his performance has been unstable. His record in the UFC stands at 2-2, and that’s about the extent of consistency he’s displayed. Nevertheless, he is coming off of a win against Shane Roller in which Johnson repeatedly seemed close to defeat. His persistence paid off, however, and he picked up the needed win in a fight that proved we can’t count Johnson out yet.

Ferguson, on the other hand, defeated veteran fighter Yves Edwards in a thrilling bout that ended in a win by unanimous decision. That final decision has been oft-contested since, but there’s little denying Ferguson’s display of impressive tenacity and heavy blows that have remained his signature since he pummeled his way through TUF 13.

It’s probable that Johnson has continued developing well since his win over Roller, for his maturation as a fighter was one of the most exciting results of that fight. But considering what Ferguson learned in his fight against Edwards, especially about the weakness of his defense, there is a great expectation that Ferguson spent a good amount of time working on slipping and dodging.

Johnson is a good striker himself, but given that likelihood that Ferguson has developed some degree of dynamic defense to support his iron chin, the odds are highly in Ferguson’s favor to win this one.

Cesar Gracie States Case for Nate Diaz Title Fight with Win over Jim Miller

The UFC’s lightweight division is the sport’s deepest, and while reigning UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson prepares for a rematch with former champion Frankie Edgar, top contenders Nate Diaz (15-7) and Jim Miller (21-3) will fight in a five-round main event at the UFC on FOX 3 card on May 5.

Many fans are expecting to see the winner of the Miller-Diaz bout getting a title shot before the year’s end, but they also may end up fighting former WEC champion Anthony Pettis to determine an absolute No. 1 contender if the UFC decides otherwise.

Cesar Gracie, who is Diaz’s coach, broke down the matchup in an interview with Tatame.com and gave his thoughts on a possible title opportunity with a win over Miller.

I guess it’s going to be a good fight. Nate Diaz is one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC, and Jim Miller is a good obstacle to overcome. He has good wrestling skills and heavy hands, he’s strong. We’re not underestimating him, but I guess Nate is better than him both on the stand-up and on the ground.

Miller was able to rebound from a defeat to Henderson when he submitted Melvin Guillard in the very first round of their bout from January. A seven-fight win streak preceded the loss to Henderson.

Diaz has looked better than ever after two very impressive wins over Donald Cerrone and Takanori Gomi. His decision victory over Cerrone was only his second win to go the distance.

“I guess he deserves it in case he gets this win,” Gracie said. “He defeated Cerrone, who was one of the firsts of the line and had a good performance against Gomi and now is fighting another contender. Cerrone is still a top guy, so if Nate can beat up these guys he deserves to be the next challenger.”

UFC on FOX 3 will also include Josh Koscheck vs. Johny Hendricks, Rousimar Palhares vs. Alan Belcher and Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson.
